About
Caerphilly Castle sprawls over a huge area making it the largest castle in Wales. Like the famous cheese, the castle has long been synonymous with Caerphilly, and is a popular family day out. It’s famous Leaning Tower — even wonkier than that of Pisa — is probably the castle’s best-loved feature. It's also a great backdrop for TV and film. It secured a starring role in the popular BBC TV series Merlin. The displayed opening times are our general pattern. Please check the Cadw website for unexpected closures, opening times, events, and site facilities.

- IweinvanaalstLille, Belgium604 contributionsIn memory of Gilbert de ClareCaerphilly castle is built between 1268 and 1295 by Gilbert de Clare. Its concentric defences are comparable to the Tower of London or Edwardian castles like Beaumaris and Harlech. Its setting amid extensive waterworks mimicks those of Kenilworth castle. By the early sixteenth century the owners of Caerphilly have lost interest in the fortress, allowing it to fall into serious decay. From 1593 onward one Thomas Lewis is allowed to quarry the stone of the castle to build his Elisabethan mansion at nearby Y Fan. Perhaps during the Civil War, or more likely in the immediate aftermath of the conflict, much of Caerphilly castle is deliberately destroyed. The four corner towers of the inner ward, together with the main front of the inner east gatehouse, seem to have been undermined or blown up. Honor and praise to the fourth marquess of Bute who funds a major restoration programme of the stronghold from 1928 to 1939, thus saving it for future generations. * Visitors can discover Caerphilly castle with the help of an outstanding guidebook. There are no reconstruction drawings or information panels on site. The stronghold impresses by its size, boasting no less than seven gatehouses with a multitude of drawbridges and portcullises and two massive dam platforms. The inner east gatehouse contains an appartment for royalty with a vast hall and a private chapel and could be sealed off from the rest of the fortress. The layout of the inner ward with the great hall, the private appartments of the earl, the kitchen tower and the transverse block with larders is very interesting. Sadly, because of major restoration works all these structures are currrently inaccessible and can only be viewed through openings in the so called de Braose gallery, making it impossible to appreciate any details. Visitors can walk atop the curtain wall (partially equipped with a wooden fighting platform) and scale the top of the inner east gatehouse and of the northwest tower. Part of the middle ward as well as the north dam platform are currently equally off limits due to works. On the south dam platform you can admire several siege engines as well as the remains of a mill.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten October 6, 2023
- melMilton Keynes, United Kingdom18 contributionsLovely castle 🏰Visited during a spontaneous trip to Wales, it was raining and not too far away from where we were staying so decided to go for it (we didn’t do any prior research or check the website). Plenty of parking near by and you get to do a nice walk around the castle from the parking to the entrance. When we arrived the receptionist advised us that some of the castle was closed and asked if we would still like to go in. Was about £10 each to wander around and we got a free book because of the closure which was a nice gesture. Took us about 45 mins to walk around all the open parts of the castle, I was a bit disappointed in the lack of information about the parts of the castle, there were a few signs with information but I feel there could have been alot more and that would mean you could spend longer there and learn a bit more. Overall I enjoyed the visit but it’s a shame I didn’t get to see the whole thing, but understand that castles are always going to need some scheduled maintenance.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 3, 2023
- Joseph SHengoed, United Kingdom1 contributionCaerphilly Castle is amazingDo you want to see an ancient Castle? Well Caerphilly Castle you can visit it's mammoth size and give you a feeling of travelling back in time. The castle was built in 1290 and is in the middle of Caerphilly town. We loved it there, especially my family, we couldn’t believe it was so large, the second biggest castle in Britain. Inside the castle it is amazing. I loved being able to walk around, being able to see what people would have seen hundreds of years ago. I loved the amazing gift shop. They sell keychains, bracelets, cushings and teddies. My favourite were the toys and the squishies. There is alos a lot do do around the castle at it is right by the shops and local cafes. My family walked around the lake and fed the ducks, it was a truly wonderful day out. I think I should give Caerphilly Castle a 5 star rating.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 29, 2024
- Mya MHengoed, United Kingdom1 contributionCaerphilly Castle is coolI would recommend visiting the ancient, amazing castle that was built in 1290. The castle is surrounded by a huge lake in the middle of Caerphilly Town. When we walked up to the castle I was shocked at how massive it is, so were my parents. We learned so much by walking around and reading all the information posted at each area. We were very impressed by the Gift Shop, there is so much you can buy in there! Teddies, keyrings, magnets and bracelets! My favourite item you can buy is the squishy toys for only £2.50! What a bargain! The only thing that is missing from this fascinating landmark is a lovely cafe to have breakfast or lunch in. But I have heard there could be some exciting news coming soon about a new cafe! I had such an amazing time at Caerphilly Castle with my family! If you can get there to visit, don't put it off, you won't regret it!Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 29, 2024

Set in stunning grounds, the building is a fascinating piece of history that you'll spend a good while looking around. Plenty to keep your interest, you'll be surprised. Wales is the spiritual home of castles and you won't find many better an example that Caerphilly. Give the town itself a good look around while you're there too, it's a rather lovely place. Plenty of nice cafes and pubs to keep you refreshed and eager to see more.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 26, 2024
- amanda5805Duncan, Canada7,336 contributionsIconic leaning towerCaerphilly Castle is like stepping into a giant storybook filled with knights and kings. From the moment you lay eyes on its towering walls, impressive moat and imposing towers, you are transported back in time. Exploring the castle grounds is a journey through centuries. From the vast outer walls to the intricate inner chambers, every corner of this castle tells a story of conquest, power, and resilience. The sheer scale of the castle is breathtaking, leaving you in awe of the ingenuity and craftsmanship of its creators. One of the most remarkable features of Caerphilly Castle is the iconic leaning tower. As you gaze upon this architectural marvel, you can't help but marvel at its precarious tilt, a testament to the castle's enduring strength and the passage of time.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 18, 2024
- AMD907Anchorage, Alaska341 contributionsCurrently being renovatedCurrently (April 2024) much of the castle is being renovated. There is a 10% discount on tickets though far more than 10% of the castle is inaccessible. However, the ticket was still pretty cheap and worth it for what was open. The castle is huge and the displays basic but it is good for a short visit.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 22, 2024
- RebeccaBNorthampton, United Kingdom157 contributionsMagnificent castle, definitely worth a visit. The castle is a great place to visit although it will be considerably better once the great hall is completed. Large parts of the castle are closed while major works take place. There are some difficult stairways to climb so probably not ideal for the less mobile. If I could complain about anything it would be the lack of information boards. I did have a guide book but it would have been so much easier to understand if there were any signs in the castle explaining where you were. Even the direction around the castle is unclear with just laminated arrow signs stuck to banisters. I will definitely return once the works are completed.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 29, 2024
- aem2682Thurrock, United Kingdom126 contributionsAfternoon VisitVery friendly staff in the ticket/shop area. The castle is currently having work done and lots of it is shut however there are areas where you can view the work that is taking place. We will return once the work is completed to see the great hall. We are English Heritage members so our entrance was free as long term members, the couple after us had arrived by train and also got a discount so would suggest check the deals out before you visit. Car park just across the road was good value pay and display.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 4, 2024
- Viva-VampiraEdinburgh, United Kingdom30 contributionsShout out to Paula, Cori, Reece and most of all Steve!Caerphilly Castle 7th May The castle itself is magnificent and has a lot of great displays, from the dragons in the pit to the projection of a portcullis in the gatehouse. A really worthy visit. However, the best of all was the staff. We were immediately greeted in the ticket office by Paula and Cori who were both lovely, welcoming, friendly and had great banter. We immediately knew we were going to have a good day. Next, we met Steve and Reece who again were extremely pleasant and welcoming. A special shout out to Steve whom we met again on the battlements and with whom we had a very lengthy and detailed chat about the castle, history in general, and who I have to say is one of the friendliest guides we have ever met. Truly, my partner and I hope to cross paths with him again.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 14, 2024

There was a lovely man at the entrance that checked us in, friendly and full of great information regarding the castle.
We highly enjoyed our visit exploring Caerphilly Castle. The castle was built in the 13th century, it is the largest castle in Wales and the second largest in the UK. By far one of the best castles we have ever visited.
Price depends on the time of year that you visit 1 October to 31 March (the time of our visit) it cost 9₤ per adult, there are various discounts offered, all listed on their website.

With timed entry and restricted visitor numbers we felt safe and relaxed on our visit. A cleaner was constantly cleaning the hand rails and surfaces and there was a one way route around the castle. Well worth a visit to this attractive castle and good value.

Cadw is ripping people off here as they charge nearly £30 for a family of three when most of the castle is having renovations done to it and off limits. There is no dressing up of the rooms that are available to see, just empty rooms not showing what they would have looked like during historic times. No interactions for my 5 year son to enjoy and imagine what it was like when the castle was inhabited all those years ago!
The castle has absolutely nothing to offer at the moment due to the works. Cadw need to charge significantly less. Yes I get the charge goes towards renovations however, that doesn't help me now and pays for other people's future visits. Charge less Cadw. Provide toilet facilities (there are none). Jusy doesn't cut it ( you could put in temporary portaloos when the works are ongoing) but you Provide nothing. No cafe either.
You did give is a big book to make up for the work going on but I feel that was just to appease the high charge of nearly £30 we paid. When visiting a historic castle you are not going to read a big book whilst there. Especially with a 5 year old. If we wanted a book we would have gone to a free library.
The plastic double headed dragons with its babies is just rubbish and my boy was not impressed at all.
Very very poor Cadw. We won't be making a return visit I'm afraid.
This castle could be amazing compared to other Cadw properties of a similar age I've visited. It isn't amazing and is very bland visit for the very high price paid.
Sort it out Cadw. Very very poor.

Due to the current situation we have been trying to support local businesses by taking day trips locally. Today we drove to Caerphilly and parked in the car park near Argos. When we arrived the castle was closed so we took a walk around the town (most of the shops were closed because it was too early). When we got back to the castle it was open. The staff at the castle were very Covid aware and took the task of cleaning seriously. The castle is what you would expect. It is a very interesting place to visit especially for older children and people with an interest in history or buildings. The castle grounds are stunning.

We really enjoyed visiting Caerphilly Castle. We took the train from Cardiff and it was a short walk to the Castle. The weather was pretty rainy but it didn't spoil our visit. There were some cool projections, displays, sound effects and sculptures that really brought life to the Castle. We loved how we were left to freely roam around the grounds. Lots of spiral staircases to explore and open space to run around. A well spent and enjoyable morning.

An interesting castle in the heart of Caerphilly. Some building renovations made the visit a little bit disappointing with scaffolding and plastic sheeting. Although we were offered a free book because of the disruptions, there were many areas off limits, some of which had no relation to the building works.
The views, however, are amazing and it was an enjoyable 1.5 hours wandering round and imagining the days gone by.
I think there’s a lot they’re missing here, educationally, there could be explanations about each area and references to the map in the guide book.
Perhaps a bit steep at £10 but it’s valid all day so you could leave for some lunch and return later.

Dont waste your money or your time. While the website mentions work is ongoing, it does not say that anyone with limited stairclimbing ability and / or taking dogs can only access 2 tiny areas outside the main castle. This was compounded by the man selling the tickets and map supplied, advising us incorrectly, that they could access part of the inside of the castle on the ground floor.
Despite my complaining to several staff I was not offered any refund of the more than £30 pounds paid - for less than 15 mins looking at the external walls which I had already done on the walk from the Castle car park. Additional tip , dont use the signposted long stay car park if you have any mobility problems as it took us 40 minutes to get from the signposted car park to the castle entrance.
Having travelled from the Kingdom of Castles (Northumberland) to see the "best Castle in the South" we were utterly disappointed and would not recommend this castle to anyone.

We had a fantastic day out (young family). there isn't onsite parking but there is ample parking in town and you also get to view the town itself too. Definitely leave a bit of extra time to walk around the moated area for free. You can take a buggy into the castle itself but obviously to go into the rooms/towers you need to leave the buggies at the bottom. There are lots of information bards and plenty of open spaces plus the "dragons" for the little knights!

Disappointed in our visit today. The castle is big but there appears to have been no effort made to bring the castle to life or entertain and educate.
Rooms were just bare, there was a bedroom with 5 pieces of furniture and a great hall with a table and a few chairs but nothing else.
A box of dressing up clothes, a few video presentations, some examples of foods, dishes a few stories about the castle just anything to make it interesting.
There was a dragon pit with a 5 minute story as you went in and an example of some large weapons but the actual inside of the castle was bare.
At and entry fee of nearly £35 for a family of 4 this could have been so much better.

Will be fabulous when works finished but at the moment rainwater pouring down inside (new roof leaking?) and quite dark inside, so trying to read the information boards with poor contrasting colours (white on red) at low levels difficult. Very good guidebook included with ticket but easier to read at home not in a freezing cold, dark castle.
Unfortunately the promised tours on Friday morning only happened at 10.30 (not clear on website) so we missed out. Otherwise friendly, welcoming staff and volunteers. (Advise disabled to call ahead re facilities. Could a blue cabin temporary WC be provided, given the lengthy timescale of the works?)
No parking for people with disabilities on site and nearest car park (short stay) still some considerable distance for those with any significant mobility issues - anyway car park small and was full that day. Parked on double yellow lines on road outside with blue badge (legally) and didn't get a ticket (but never quite sure of this - some parking attendants can be unsympathetic, so make your own judgement). Maybe visit again when works finished and it's warmer.

At the castle there is a small cafe and you can get an ice cream. But if you want something more substantial you will need to visit one of the many pubs or restaurants sited within walking distance of the castle. When we visited the ice cream stall was on the left, opposite the visitor centre. I think you also get your hot drinks there too.
