We are both in our 60s and relatively fit. We walked up on a fairly gloomy day in August. Make no mistake this is a relatively steep climb all the way up.in a path with loose stones. In places like passing The trout farm which is halfway up it can be fairly tricky and unless at least one of you you is relatively agile you will really need to take your time. On reaching the lake the scenery around is nice but the lake itself or reservoir isn't the prettiest you'll see.
There are no facilities so take your own drinks etc.

Absolutely stunning. We walked up and around the lake with our children (9,10,13) without any trouble.
The wind was howling along the top so it was slightly trickier to stay grounded but the views were absolutely worth it.
An must for anyone who loves a good hilly walk & a view that is mind blowing!

This walk was suggested by Gail, our Host at the BnB we stayed at in Brecon (Borderers Inn). It was simply excellent and utterly peaceful. We drove the scenic route home and got to witness the absolutely shambolic crowds and parking at pen -y- fan. We only had time for one walk this holiday and were very grateful for the local advice recieved.

We took a morning walk up to the lake (we didn’t see the fabled lady of the lake). The car park is easy to find and free. The roads are very narrow so take care and drive slowly.
We did a walk from the car park up to the lake, around the lake and back. The walk was just under 6km with total elevation of 240m. The route up isn’t steep but it is constant. We walked it with our 10 year old daughter and 6 month puppy. Both were fine!
It was a very nice walk with some fantastic views.

The roads to the car park were narrow and at one point a farmer asked us to pull in as they had sheep coming. Hundreds of sheep filmed by my son who thought it was brilliant.
The car park isn’t huge but we got there early so wasn’t a problem.
The walk to the reservoir is steepish but my 10yr old managed so...🤷🏻♂️
Yes it was rainy and yes it was foggy but the views are incredible. The air was fresh and Beacons truly are amazing.
There is obviously no shop for miles so take plenty of water as you could be walking for hours.
Will definitely be returning. We stayed in Cardiff which is a 1.5hr drive to the totally free and beautiful area of Wales.

What a place. Good walk, good path for most of the route bar about 30 metres getting past the trout farm. The views up and around the lake are fab. Car park is fairly small and the road from the farm is unmettalled.

The walk is pretty demanding, not for young kids or anyone who would struggle getting up a consistently steep incline. Absolutely worth it though, views are jaw droppingly beautiful and the lake is lovely too. I can imagine on a hotter day it would be great for swimming.

To get to the start of the walk you need to head for the village of LLanddeusant, the map grid ref is SN 798238, The car park is situated at a dead end lane out of the village, it is free parking, you head up the track towards the peaks, you pass through a fish farm where you will see lots of jumping fish, keep following the track up to the lake Llyn y fan fach, you can go to the right and the path with take you up to the peak Bannau Sir Gaer above the lake and you have an excellent views of the countryside.follow the track going upwards and you will come to the Trig point peak of Fan Bryncheiniog from there you can see the lake of Llyn y fan Fawr, continue allong the ridge and the path will then drop down steps to the lake, from the base of the cliffs take the keep going around the lake at the base of the escarpment and you will come to the track which will take you back to the lake Llyn y fan fach and back down track to car park.

This is the most wonderful place. Spectacular and beautiful scenery, steeped in Welsh folklore. This is a national treasure and it should be respected as such, it must be accessible to all. The track up from the car park is ok, roughly graded and slightly uncomfortable underfoot, fine for about a mile. But then the fishery. Welsh Water have placed two locked gates across the track with signs warning of surveillance cameras. The diverted section of path follows the top of a wall, it is a dangerous crumbling area with loose rocks, extremely narrow and a serious hazard. The remainder of the track beyond the fishery is ok. The wall section effectively makes it impossible for anyone with difficulty walking. It is a barrier to less able people. Are Welsh Water aware of the disability act? What about the National park, they are proud to advertise the Llyn as an important feather of the Beacons. This is shameful and requires urgent attention. If you are fit and and able really recommend this outstanding place.

Hello, I wondered how the road to the car park is with a small van? (VW Transporter) I’ve read a lot of comments about the road to the car park and wanted to check it would be okay in a van? Thank you

Hi, can I know where is the car park to access this place, and how long we have to walk to get to the lake? I have my parents who would be following me as well

The car park is available on any GPS system, just put in Lyn Y Fan Fach Car Park and it will come up no problem. Parking is limited so do not get there too late. The walk to the lake is about 20 minutes with a good path next to the stream, and only 1 tricky bit going past the Trout Farm, but OK if you go slowly. Slight uphill on the way up but of course downhill on the way back.

We'll be with children (aged 10 months to 5 year old) and a pregnant lady so not the most mobile group of people, that 1.3 mile walk from the car park to the lake won't really be possible for us. Is it possible to drop the family closer to the lake and then come back to park the car? Or is that track not drivable?

That is not possible as the track is gated and locked. Sorry.
