- TravelingSoccerLoonSaint Paul, Minnesota3,188 contributionsExtensive and Well-Preserved Medieval Town WallsAlmost as enjoyable as climbing the towers of Conwy Castle. The medieval walls are well preserved and provide beautiful views of Conwy along with the imposing Castle rising above the town and the surrounding countryside including River Conwy. The walls are quite extensive and you can walk the entire 1.2km. Don't just walk the bit from near the car park to the castle but get out a map and explore the entire thing. There are several entrance points including one off of Bangor Road just before crossing Town Ditch Road.Visited September 2022Written February 21, 2023
- EESW1Lincolnshire, United Kingdom4,568 contributionsDon't miss the latrine block...As well as building the castle, Edward I built walls around the town below. These are still some of the best preserved town walls in the country, with only parts of the walls along the quayside missing. Most of the walls are also walkable with steep steps accessing them at the gateways or where the road cuts though the walls. It is worth walking the walls just for the good views across the town. You really can see the layout and how it relates the the castle. A slight word of caution - the wall walk isn't particualrly wide and is also fairly rough. The stones can be slippery after rain. Don't miss the twelve latrines built along the outside of the walls to the west of Mill Gate. (You can';t see them from the walls so have to go outside. ) These were built for use by Edward I’s logistic corps (the equivalent of today’s civil service) whose building was outside the castle on the site of the car park.Visited April 2023Traveled soloWritten April 15, 2023
- pfefmeisterSan Francisco, California2,971 contributionsPerfect Historical WalkWhat a wonderful experience to walk along the walled fortifications while admiring the outstanding scenery of this unique location. The best part is that it is free. There are multiple locations for accessing the wall, so just keep walking and eventually you’ll come upon a stairway giving you access to the ramparts. Take your time and appreciate the history that the town of Conwy has lovingly preserved. Great job!Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 21, 2023
- Elizabeth MVancouver, Canada15 contributionsWonderful walk around this ancient cityLoved the walk around the town on these ancient walls. Beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, town and the castle itself. Recommend skipping the castle itself and just doing the walk. Such an inspiring ancient town and history. My fit but very elderly nonagenarian mother managed the walk around the walls, too, although there were uneven parts.Visited August 2023Written August 1, 2023
- Escape from RealityKent, United Kingdom128 contributionsA bustling and beautiful Welsh townConwy is a bustling and beautiful town bursting with independent giftshops, trinkets and antiques stores and traditional pubs galore. With lots of small parking lots dotted around the town it’s just a case of driving around until a space comes free. Conwy isn’t huge and it doesn’t take long to stroll around but it’s so worth it, we didn’t go to the castle but we did walk up the walls around the castle, around the quant town and along the harbour. Here’s what we did on our visit to the town: - Had the most delicious roast dinner at Erskins Pub, chosen because of its fab reviews and it didn’t disappoint - Visted Great Britain’s Smallest House - Grabbed a welsh made traditional ice cream and ate it in the rain. There is a visitor centre in Conwy which is helpful to discovering more. Hope this has been helpful for anyone thinking of a visit to ConwyVisited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 3, 2023
- BabyschnookersCastleford, United Kingdom44 contributionsBrilliant, free way to see Conwy! We passed through Conwy on our way to Pwllheli. We parked near a section of the walls and accessed via some stairs. We followed the walls to the castle and then descended. Obviously not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs as lots of steep sections and stairs! We did not go in the castle but visited the shop and visitors centre. We then walked down to the harbour area and had fish and chips. We rejoined the walls at the far side of the harbour and ended back where we joined near the car. In total spent about 2 hours in Conwy and really enjoyed it.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 30, 2023
- chicf1Cradley Heath, United Kingdom60 contributionsInteresting history, lovely views, challenging walk!Whilst visiting Conwy we decided to walk the city walls after our trip to Conwy Castle. Walking the walls is a really nice free activity to do whilst visiting this town. There's some information boards along the walk with some historical information about the town and the walls which was interesting and the views of Conwy (and beyond) from there are really lovely, great for some nice photo opportunities particularly down by the harbour. It is worth noting however that the walk can be a little difficult. There are some very steep slopes (and by the time we got to the last one we were both already worn out and struggled with it) and the ground is mostly uneven adding an extra challenge. The path is quite narrow too making it a little tricky if people are coming past in the opposite direction. Regardless we both really enjoyed our walk of the walls and would happily recommend doing this whilst visiting the town if you're able to.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 4, 2023

This is a great way to get a look at Conwy and to see the castle and harbour from a different angle.
Due to covid a one way system is in operation, some stairways are entrance only, others exit only, there are maps dotted around town with stickers telling you which is which although some points arent easy to locate.
Entry to the walls is free, making this a great way to spend 30 minutes, some lovely photo opportunities of the castle and harbour can be had.
Recommend getting on at the castle and off at the harbour.

Once we had visited the castle it seemed only right that we should follow up with a walk around the town walls. Some sections are quite steep (up and down) but the views you get across the town, bay and countryside are amazing.
The wall from the castle is easy to follow but then it stops and you have to pick it up again from behind the train station, this is not entirely obvious and not particularly well signed but once you find it again you can then follow the wall around to the bay. Definitely worth doing.

Compulsive walk up and down and up and down along the length of the town defensive walls around from the castle to the harbour - free to do even if you don't want to pay to visit the castle. Took approximately half an hour at an easy pace and not overly strenuous. Provided us with a good overview of town of Conwy and its fortifications.

The survival of the vast majority of Conwy's walls make it one of the best preserves medieval towns in the UK. Around two thirds of their 1300m length can be accessed, although at present due to covid there is a one way system in operation. To walk the full length of the public area, enter at the staircase by the castle. At their western end they rise up to afford fantastic views over the town and back towards the castle. Rather curiously, a new gate has been created to allow the railway line to enter (it departs via a tunnel under the walls).

Free to enter and walk the walls. There is one small stretch, just 100 metres overlooking the car park outside the castle. A much longer section takes you around most of the city wall with great views of the castle, the town and waterfront.

*Visited April 2021* The town walls of Conwy are part of a medieval defensive structure that was constructed around the town and built between 1283 and 1287. The site shares UNESCO World Heritage status along with other equally stunning sites in Wales. I walked around the areas that were open and there were terrific views of Conwy and the surrounding area. During my visit there were strict Covid restrictions in place with a one-way policy around the walls which was organised very efficiently. Conwy Town Walls are magnificent and are worth exploring on a visit to the town.

We walked the short part of the walls, which are accessed in Castle car park, while waiting for our time slot at the Castle, but the best part of the walk was definitely the longer section which took us high above the town with fabulous views.
There is a one way system in place and we did have to hunt around a bit to find the correct entrance as it wasn't clear where to start.
The easiest way to find the entrance is to walk near the railway station and it's behind that.
Some parts of the wall are a bit uneven and it is high up so anyone who struggles walking, doesn't like heights or can't manage lots of steps may want to give this a miss.
For anyone else it's an excellent hike and it's free too! We enjoyed the wall walk more than the Castle.

Great views over the whole town and the castle.
Currently a one-way system in place due to covid-19.
This is not achievable as one complete wall walk as you have to exit and enter at several places.
This can be somewhat confusing so be sure to take a photo of the wall walk map in your phone to ensure you don’t get lost!
Uneven floor (as you would expect) so unsuitable for tired young children or elderly/infirm walkers.
Well worth the effort.

There are a lot of stairs around the walls to climb up. Some are easy to find - one is at the pay and display car park, some need looking for more but all have signs near them.

Do you have to walk all the way round or are there places to come down mid way if you only want to walk part of it?

The whole river side section is not walkable so that is a bit of a trek to get back on, but there are plenty of places to come down, usually at the gates. Get a map from the Tourist place before you start to plan ahead.

I would probably avoid with a pushchair, not only is there stairs to get up and down from the walls the walls themselves are not a smooth pathway👍🏻😬

I don't know officially but as access is by open steps from the street I don't see how they can be excluded.

Hi, we're heading for Conwy towards the end of September, roughly how long will it take us to walk the walls? Do they encompass the town or is it just a section still standing?
thanks

It's well worth the stairs and walk, especially if the weather is nice. Lots of photo ops. Probably half an hour to an hour, depending on stops and number of people on the wall. I have two hip replacements and had absolutely no trouble negotiating the stairs or circumnavigating the town.

There is no staff, except the occasional mason from Cadw, the Welsh Ancient Monuments organisation. A guide to the Walls may be had at the adjacent Castle.

Yes absolutely. We saw quite a few dogs on our walk round, but keep them on a lead as a fall from these high walls would be fatal.
