Mr. Davies provided my partner and I an exceptional “ancestry” tour of Wiltshire. He arranged for us to be picked up and returned to our club in London for the day by private car. This was very helpful as my partner is partially disabled. (Although the London traffic was horrendous and we might do differently next time). We then proceeded to meetup with him and he provided a wonderful, well informed tour of a list of villages and sites from whence my ancestors hailed specific to Wiltshire, which I had provided to him, such as churches and villages from genealogical research I had done. It was, he said, the first tour of that nature he had done. He had scouted the sites in advance! Not only that, but as an archaeologist and historian, he had great knowledge of the area. We got to see the ancestral sites, very meaningful to me as my grandfather was an emigrant to the U.S. We also were able to fit in some Neolithic sites, two small, interesting museums, several iconic villages, and a luxury lunch at a Michelin starred restaurant on a lovely resort estate. My partner is a Numismatist and very interested in coins, medallions and hordes, and Mr Davies even had a great knowledge of these as well. As a premier musician, he was extremely cultured and well travelled and was even acquainted with my partners great uncle, a well known French Horn player. What a small world we live in and I would not hesitate to say what a high recommendation we would give him, a lovely chap. It was a great day and though not inexpensive, well worth the cost.

This tour was everything I'd hoped it would be. Laurence took me off the beaten track to Neolithic sites around Avebury and the Ridgeway that many people don't make the effort to see - highlights were the Devil's Den and the Valley of the Rocks. Laurence is extremely knowledgable about the deep history of the landscape, and - the most important thing - great company for a day's walk. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to explore this landscape more deeply.

Laurence was able to fit all our “must-sees” into our tour. He didn’t let a cold, rainy, and windy day stop us from fully experiencing Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral, and Lacock. Laurence shared so many historical facts about these places and the surrounding areas. He was punctual and conveniently picked and dropped us off at our hotel in Bath. He’s also an excellent driver. My whole family highly recommends using Laurence!

Laurence Davies will keep you engaged and brings a depth of understanding and thoughtfulness to his tours. We explored Avebury, Silbury Hill, The Sanctuary, as well as an active archaeological dig. He capped off our time together with a fabulous lunch at The Quarry. This is the guy if you want to understand all that surrounds you in the Salisbury area. He picked us up in Bath which made the whole adventure very easy. Enjoy!

Laurence was an outstanding guide to the area and an engaging, energetic companion during the day. He provided valuable insights informed by his lifelong association with the area as well as his extensive in-depth archaeological training and experience. All this led to a lively and hugely informative day of trekking from Avebury to Stonehenge. He easily and quickly adjusted to accommodate our requests and preferences, to include a side trip to Avebury Manor. He filled us with invaluable details on the distant history of the area that brought to life the views of Stonehenge through the centuries, the relationship between Avebury and Stonehenge, and the efforts to discover and preserve both sites. Though Laurence has enormous knowledge of this area, including the barrows and white chalk horses, his observations are always accessible and entertaining, revealing of his deep, abiding interest in the region as well as his sense of humor. We had an active, challenging, informative and highly enjoyable day in his company and value his continuing friendship. A terrific tour with an exceptional guide!

We were on a "best friends trip of a lifetime" in England and both of us agreed that Laurence's tour was the highlight of our two weeks in the UK! Laurence was so knowledgeable and his passion was very evident! He brought the history of the area to life in a way that you just can't get from books or bus tours. We enjoyed his company and felt like we'd made a new friend when the day was over! THIS is the way to see the Stonehenge/Avebury area!

Fantastic tours! We spent 3 exciting days touring Neolithic Wiltshire, from Avebury to Stonehenge to Uffington, with Laurence (the man of Oldbury Tours). His knowledge of Wiltshire's Neolithic UNESCO World Heritage Sites (including West Kennet Long Barrow, Silbury Hill, Windmill Hill, the Sanctuary, the Stonehenge Cursus, Woodhenge, and Durrington Walls) is superb. Beyond having archeological knowledge of these sites, he was able to organize our itinerary requests with the unpredictable - including remarkably unsettled weather! And he was good company. We hiked on sunny days and were driven near each selected site when it was raining. We would not have changed anything about our experience with Laurence - except the weather. He exceeded our expectations and we would tour with him again. Even if you do not have a specific list of sites for your itinerary, just trust his recommendations for a wonderful time.

We greatly enjoyed our wonderful day touring Avebury, Stonehenge and Salisbury with Laurence. He consulted us about our interests in proposing the itinerary and we made adjustments during the day. He is knowledgeable and interesting so our conversation never faltered. Laurence’s genuine enthusiasm for the sites and history of the region made the day very special. We highly recommend his tours.

I am not ordinarily inclined to pay to be guided around an attraction that is free to visit which I'm perfectly capable of researching myself. However, I could not be more pleased with my investment in a half day tour of the Avebury monuments with Oldbury Tours. The sites are generally within 1-1.5 miles of each other, but not particularly well signposted. Following a guide who knows the most efficient route among them, rather than flailing around muddy fields alone, is very nearly worth the price on its own. But the real value is Laurence Davies' deep and nuanced knowledge of the area, based both on having been born and raised locally, and having participated in a number of archaeological digs within the World Heritage site. Although his expertise is vast, his way of sharing it is personal, lively, and engaging--not at all pedantic. I feel not only that I learned much more about the area than I would have on my own, but that I also had a more fun day with a genuinely lovely person.
