Worth a visit for an hour
Free to visit, this offers a lovely range of art across the ages from older to modern, painting to sculpture, so there was something for most people. A large gallery was empty upstairs and another closed, which was a waste, and the toilets need revamping - they are from a bygone era. However, it's worth a visit and an hour of your time if you enjoy art.

Disappointing to find ]several upstairs galleries closed on a Sunday
Looked forward to revisiting last Sunday. However, several upstairs galleries closed due to 'unforeseen circumstances'. Informed this was due to 'austerity' and a staff recruitment freeze and apparently this has been occurring regularly. What priority does Leeds Council place on tourism and culture ?

    Average experience.
I decided to visit after viewing the world class collection on Art UK website. I was very disappointed that there was so little of this world class collection on show with many galleries closed. The downstairs gallery of Victorian Art was well displayed but the fine Twentieth century collection was poorly displayed at the top of the stairs. The gallery felt under resourced, neglected and lifeless despite the number of visitors. I suspect that if you attend a work shop you get a very different experience. Very sad.

A fresh refresh of art, new and old... something for everyone!
A fantastic mix of art, contemporary and classic, the staff were lovely and chatty and the cafe is magnificent! We went to see the new curated show upstairs, which brought together new acquisitions, paintings, ceramics, sculptures, prints and drawings. It made us look harder, think harder and realise that all creative pursuits do not have to be brash and experiential, they can be quiet, slow to materialise and allow for a more considered approach... excellent! Loved chatting to Jane as well.

This is a great resource and they have some amazing works on show. However, on visiting today, we had an unfortunate experience that wasn’t particularly helpful. I hope this feedback is useful for how exhibits are developed in future.

We were looking at the shifting perspectives exhibit, part of which was housed in a display unit that was quite high off the ground. My youngest (7 years old) was unable to look into it, so rested his hands on the side to try and see and was told that it wasn’t safe to rest upon, meaning that I either had to hold him in the air, or he would have to miss out.

Please try to remember that not all of the people who visit are adult with no additional access requirements. I appreciate that in the olden days these cases were made to a different size, but we live in a time now where we want these things to be accessed by as wide an audience as possible.

It seems harsh to rate an attraction that is free 'poor', and it wasn't exactly that there was anything particularly wrong, there just wasn't much that would make me recommend it to a friend to visit.

The building itself is beautiful, and the cafe is an impressive tiled hall. The food choices in the cafe are exceptionally limited however.

The art gallery itself is not particularly extensive, and I did not find the information about the art very easy to read.

The interactive installation using microphones to light columns temporarily amused the children.

Overall I would not recommend going out of your way to visit.

As with many art galleries the contents can be very hit and miss. I am left wondering what is in their storage vaults which should have been on display instead. The balance between modern and classical was skewed towards modern.

A personal favourite new find is Three Men of exactly the Same Size in an Unequal Room by Stephen Campbell.

I had high hopes of this gallery, due to their claimed huge collection of art. But where was It? The guiding principle seemed to be to show as few artworks as possible, my abiding memory being huge areas of blank white wall. Some rooms were virtually empty, and even where pictures were on display, there were only a handful of them. And to cap it all, there were even some blank spaces where they'd put up a sign saying the picture had been taken down! So why not fill the gap with another one? If I had donated my art collection to the city of Leeds, as a lot of people have, I'd feel pretty cross that so little was on show. Why? What is the point of having a large art gallery with so little on display. Go to Birmingham or Manchester art galleries and you'll find hundreds of artworks on display. Why can't Leeds do the same?

This Gallery offers an interesting collection of Modern and Contemporary Art. Some rooms are currently closed. Next to it is the library. At the museum entrance is a bronze work by British artist Henry Moore, whose gallery is on the right.

The Art Gallery is free, so it is not really fair to complain, but there was very little on display at the start of July - lots of empty rooms. It wasn't clear if they were about to erect new displays, or if this was a covid-safety measure. The upstairs gallery wasn't open in the morning, so we came back later, but it was hardly worth the effort as there wasn't much else there. Also, in covid times, why not have more copies of the labels for the pictures? The pictures were grouped together, so you had to look at one notice at the side, and work out which piece was which - there could have been at least one other copy of the information on the other side of the display, and then visitors would not have to stand so close to each other.

The art gallery is housed in a very attractive grand Victorian building and is free to enter.
We had visited some years ago and very much enjoyed it. Unfortunately on this occasion we were disappointed.
There was an exhibition of one artist and very little else. We were there less than 30 minutes and left unimpressed.

WHAT IT IS.

Perm: artwork (mainly paintings) grouped into collections and themes.

Both perm and temp exhibitions are free to visit.

GETTING THERE.

Closest station: Leeds. Exit the station and walk north along New Station Street and then Park Row. As you reach Victoria Square / The Headrow, the gallery would be to your left.

They could improve the experience by putting more art on the walls! I was so very disappointed.
I haven't been to the Art Gallery for a number of years, having moved away from Leeds.
I was visiting my daughter and we decided to go and see what was on offer. Such a disappointment! There was only one room with any real pictures in, all the rest were either empty or had childish daubs, which, although most were colourful, didn't do it for us.
Where are the lovely pictures I remember from my youth?

Good as a free attraction, lovely building with some beautiful features.
If you have eclectic art tastes, the exhibitions might be for you, just not really my thing - at time of visit was featuring local artists' work as well as other historic pieces. I happened to walk past the building featured in one of the exhibited hyper-realistic paintings, so that pleased me!
Didn't eat in the cafe but the decor is stunning.
