- famullaBatley, United Kingdom182 contributionsBrilliant day out for all agesWhat an absolutely fantastic day! I don't often get to keave 5* reviews so I am really pleased to be writing this one. Myself and my family which included an 6+8 year old visited today during the viking event. Firstly, all the staff were absolutely amazing, friendly and polite. The highlight was of ourse the live re-enactment of shield maidens by India- she is awesome! Her story telling was gripping, thrilling and exciting! She commanded the stage so well and was very friendly and polite too when ending her talk. All the staff in the viking village and other interactive areas were so good with the kids too. The museum itself is huge with endless displays! We didn't give ourself enough time to see each floor properly, so I look forward to returning. Loved the cafe, cakes and hot drinks were spot on. Also nice to see little byo lunch areas on few floors, so you can still bring a picnic or own snacks. Brilliant facilities toilets etc on many floors. Really look forward to visiting again, to see the displays but also other themed events. Just some feedback for possible improvement to interactive areas like the viking village: * The staff/visitor areas need to be visibly separated especially if weapons are involved. My children were able to get hold of a sword, axe, faux bow and arrow whilst I was on the phone directing my husband to our location, there was a bench but it was low lying and I didn't recognise this as a separate area and fortunately the staff came around and stoped my children from holding the items. They were very professional and I'm thankful they were there but to avoid this in the future the weapons should be kept behind the staff or out of direct reach from visitors. Signs before entering the viking village about handling of weapons would be good too. It was nice once we knew this that the staff then showed my children how to hold the weapons and allowed them to hold the weapons in a controlled and supervised way. Thank you for being understanding and professional when taking the items and then explaining how they need to be handled.Thank you for your review. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Royal Armouries Museum, and that you got to experience our live demonstrations whilst you were here, like our Viking Shield Maidens. Regarding your feedback for the Viking Village, this was the first time we have had something like this in the museum, so your comments regarding this are very much valued for future events. We look forward to seeing you again soon, perhaps at our Fantasy Heroes event for the February Half Term (11th-19th Feb). - Jay C24 contributionsVery niceSpent about two hours there as they were closing soon. Still could have spent about her two hours taking it all in as there was so much to see. Great exhibits Only bad thing was that there was a pot of broker or in repair machines or exhibits . Hence the need for donations as this was a completely free museumThank you for your review. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to the Royal Armouries, even if it was only a short visit. We are in the process of updating our interactives in the galleries and exhibitions around the museum, so your feedback regarding this is much appreciated. We hope to see you again soon. - summerinthecity01280 contributionsOK for a few hoursNot been here since the late 1990’s so was looking forward to it. Happily it was free entry this time as I’m pretty sure when I last went I had to pay. I would say 2 hours tops here is enough some interesting displays lots to see but does became very repetitive. I thought the staff all looked very scruffy there needs to be a better uniform policy in place. I found the website unhelpful as no postcode provided or much information regarding parking and no info on parking charges. We used CitiPark Leeds Dock cost £4.50 for 2 hours. I doubt I would visit again but I’m sure people with older children would enjoy it if looking for a free outing for a couple of hours. We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit to the Royal Armouries. We would like to hear more about your experience. Please contact us via our website: https://royalarmouries.org/contact-us/ We are sorry to hear you did not find our collection engaging and hope you'll visit us for some of our upcoming events listed on the websites where there is a larger variety of activities taking place during the day. We look forward to hearing from you, and hope that we can make your next visit a more enjoyable one. - Jessica0511Sheffield, United Kingdom10 contributionsGreat day outThe place is absolutely great for a free activity, lots of history for the kids and me to learn! The kids loved the shows that were put on. The one thing that would be nice around the museum is some interactive displays where the young ones can touch, hear and have simplified information on screens or simple information cards etc. But the museum is wonderful, staff are helpful and a good day out! Gift shop very expensive selling lots of things that are much cheaper in the toy stores. Be wary if you multiple childrenThank you for your review. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Royal Armouries Museum. We have looked at the interactive exhibits and hope to improve our offering in future. Your feedback on this is greatly appreciated. I will pass on your lovely comments to the team. We hope you will visit us again soon. - kimbosonyaUnited Kingdom6 contributionsexcellent unless you need a wee.Excellent place to visit and so much to see. Live action happening that was very entertaining and so much information to wow you. coffee not overly expensive but nice. Great giftshop with some great stuff, again at a decent price. However, once again women don't get their own toilets. why oh why can we not just have man's, womens, unisex or just one loos with fully sealed independent toilets, not women being forced to give up their privacy once again. Thanks so much for your comments and that you enjoyed your visit to the Royal Armouries. We wanted to let you know that we do have women’s toilets available throughout the museum. We have introduced one gender neutral toilet so we can be inclusive to a broad range of people, however all the other toilets remain as facilities for men, women or people with disabilities and there is a choice of facilities for our visitors to use. - Holly WLeeds, United Kingdom6 contributionsBrilliant eventVisited for the fantasy heroes event, my kids thoroughly enjoyed the day despite not knowing all the characters.. The trail was a great idea and meant we all saw things around the museum we hadn't seen before. Echoing a previous review, it would be good to point out where female-only toilets are as not everyone wishes to use shared facilities.Thank you for your review. We do have female facilities in our café on the ground floor as well as facilities on the 1st and 4th floors. - Pamela JManchester, United Kingdom35 contributionsFascinating museumThere was so much to see and do here, not sure where to start describing our day! Lots of huge exhibits, information, demonstrations and more. The first show we watched was a dramatic monologue about Viking Shield Maiden. The second was a poleaxe fight between two actors in medieval armour. The shop and cafe were also excellent and the general location is very interesting, as the museum is right next to the River Aire and Leeds Dock, with its many restored and new buildings.Thank you for your review. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Royal Armouries Museum, and had the chance to see some our of live demonstrations, as well as enjoying our café and shop. It was fascinating to find out about elephant armour. We also liked the detailed battle plans for the Napoleonic war. It was really good to be able to touch some of the exhibits. It was a big space and we had fun all day. All of us would love to go back when we can!Thank you for your review. The Jousting was excellent and we noticed how there was a focus on free jousting-themed entertainment for children outside of the venue which was excellent. The museum is certainly worth a visit too. A really good morning's entertainmentThank you for your review, we are glad to hear that you enjoyed your time at the Royal Armouries Museum and that you were able to attend our International Jousting Tournament. - Althea3 contributionsSlightly unusual, but thoroughly entertainingMy husband got us tickets for a jousting event (sounds a bit random, I know) but it was fabulous! I would definitely recommend it, as we were thoroughly entertained! The staff were all in period costume, and had a fantastic dialogue and definitely got the crowd going. (We also had balcony seats, which were slightly more expensive, but we had a fantastic view of the jousting so definitely worth paying a little bit extra for, especially as we were under the canvas in case of rain). We also got to meet the riders after the event and get their autographs :) It's a child friendly event, and the staff also work in the museum, which we visited after the jousting event, and it's got lots of tournament armour to look at.Thank you for your review, we are glad to hear that you enjoyed your time at the Royal Armouries Museum and that you were able to attend our International Jousting Tournament. This free to visit museum is everything you want for a day out. Advisable to book entry beforehand, there is a car park next door although this is a little expensive. Very friendly and welcoming staff to guide you. There are 3 floors of exhibits to view. We went on a day that had events on, sword fighting and horse events. These were amazing to watch and very entertaining. I would allow at least 2 hours to see everything. Accessible for people with disabilities. There is an on site cafe and shop. This attraction may be free but I'd recommend making a donation which you can do inside the museum. Great day out

This is an excellent museum. There are excellent displays, some with interactive elements. There are regular displays throughout the day which appeal to young & old alike. It’s situation close to the Aire & Calder Navigation affords excellent views over Leeds city centre. Admission is free with a suggested donation of £5, there are two cafes with reasonably priced food & also am area to eat your own picnic. Our only criticism is that the signage could be improved.

An extensive collection with in depth information. Only issue was that it was half term and you could hardly move in some areas. Had to wait ten minutes for a lift due to queues by them and having a pushchair. The short shows required waiting for 30+minutes if you wanted a view, and lasted 5 minutes. The areas they have the shows are hemmed in by display cabinets, which make it impossible for many to view the shows. Only concession is it is free, so I can't complain too much. Will visit again at a term time weekend.

Modern museum laid out on 5 floors. Free entry, and a large car park (you have to pay) nearby, so very accessible. It was interesting... up to a point. Unless you are a real gun and sword enthusiast you will get enough of five floors of continuous relentless displays of these weapons. I would say about two floors of this is enough. Don't be too surprised if the kids play up after an hour. Museum displayed many videos with occasional live talks. Restaurant was expensive with baguettes at £7 to £8.50. Worth a visit for an hour or so.

We spent a whole day here and still didn’t manage to see everything. There are some fantastic displays and we saw several excellent shows/talks. We would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in history and/or military but allow plenty of time. The cafe is currently closed so we had to use the on site bistro which is very over priced. They were carrying out maintenance work on the day of our visit which made it a little difficult to get round as various lifts/stairs/corridors were out of use.

Thank you for your feedback! We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Royal Armouries Museum.
Our interpretation team work hard to bring the collection to life through shows, combats and talks.
We have currently been carrying essential maintenance works throughout the museum during the winter months. We are glad to hear that the works did not spoil your enjoyment of the museum.
We hope you will visit us again soon!

Can't fault this place - for starters it's free, then it has a great collection of unique exhibits and also some great displays / reenactments of history. So even in our visit we were able to hear a Napoleonic war story and also see some medieval fighting with weapons of the time, humourously narrated by the people who work there. Only a 10-15 min walk from the city centre. Highly recommend this.

This museum is really first class and would require many visits to take it all in, if you were that keen. About 3 hours would be enough, but I was fortunate to see live demonstrations by actors/staff? on mediaeval sword fighting and also rifles/pistols/revolvers as they evolved from the Wild West to the 20th Century. These presentations were very professional and very lively, captivating the whole audience.
This was my 2nd visit, and I enjoyed it even more than last time. Good views of Leeds Dock, the River Aire and Calder Main Line Canal and water taxis from the large windows on the 4 upper floors. As a bonus, it’s all free - you can even sit at tables and eat your own food if you wish.

I was not too sure what to make of the Royal Armouries. It is good that all of these exhibits are now out of a warehouse and now on display (the Tower of London did not have enough room to show all of these items), but after a while I got a bit weary of different ways man has invented to bring pain and death to others – a sad reflection upon the human race.
On the hour, every hour, there was some form of outside display that we loved seeing. One of the most interesting exhibits was to see the various weapons from films and TV shows (including science fiction e.g. Star Wars).
Situated next to Leeds Docks, parking was easy and entrance to the museum was free (via pre-booked tickets).

It is a must if you are in Leeds to have a look around this place. You can spend hours on each floor looking at the historic items that are on show. Unfortunately we went when it was a school holiday, so there were a lot of children there which slowed things down a bit.

Museum is good… was better last time I came with lots of activities but not so much this time…. Cafe workers needs experience as we waited 45 minutes for 2 cold coffees and only one Scone when we paid for 2 with jam and cream and we only got one without jam and cream currently waiting for the rest of the order very bad service then when asked why no vanilla in coffee we got a bad look like it was our fault. Not worth the 15 pounds we spent in here for a very small order and stressed our staff as they can’t keep up.

We went to Leeds on a Thursday in Feb and they were running. You can get it from just outside Leeds train station and it takes you right outside the Royal Armouries Museum. The river taxis run every 15 mins and they are £1 per person. It is about a 12 min journey. Well worth it. We loved these.
