Overview
More
St. Mary's Guildhall is one of the finest surviving medieval guildhalls in England, and has been one of Coventry's premier historic venues for more than 600 years. First built in the 1340s for the merchant guild of St. Mary, with its magnificent medieval interiors, and fine artworks the Guildhall offers a window into Coventry's glorious past. Once a prison to Mary, Queen of Scots, and even a playhouse where Shakespeare is thought to have performed, the Guildhall provides a fascinating free experience for all ages, at the historic heart of the city. St. Mary's Guildhall also offers a memorable venue for weddings, meetings, conferences and private functions, whilst in the vaulted undercroft beneath the Great Hall is the atmospheric Godiva's cafe, offering tasty, good value snacks and refreshments.

I love history and this place simply oozes it. It's stunning inside, quirky and lopsided in places but well worth a visit. It's not huge so you'll not be there for hours but its free and right next to the famous Coventry Cathedral so you...More

Thanks for your review braonain, although I think you are referring to 'Shakespeare's Schoolroom' and the Guildhall in nearby Stratford upon Avon. As it happens, Shakespeare would have accompanied his father on trips to Coventry to watch the famous Mystery Plays being performed, probably the...More

This was a very interesting hall to visit - huge and medieval. The tapestry is quite a sight to see. The upper rooms are interesting, especially with their very low doorways and narrow winding stairs. The modern chair took away the historical feeling though.

As an active attendee at functions in many of the famous guilds in London I can honestly say that this is an absolute gem in the heart of the midlands. Our capital has nothing to compare with this beautiful medieval building. The information provided in...More
