Lovely visit
Aug 2021 • Solo
What a lovely morning I spent at the Canal Basin taking in the history and all the Canal and River Trust are doing, along with the Council to put it on the map and make it something worth sharing. Lovely little shops, (although not the craft barns as per the signs) take aways from th3 Portuguese shop and food from Playwrights. We'll worth a stop via boat or foot.

Nice Walk, Interesting History
Jan 2021
The Basin offers a very pleasant walk along the canal side. There's a few really good food shops - don't miss the nattas from the Portuguese one! There's a good little cafe that offers take-away service and a small garden area to walk around. On heritage/fete days there is a fantastic model railway exhibition and The Coventrian canal boat which offers short trips. There is also a canoe/kayaking club.
There is an iconic statue of James Brindley known as the 'father of the British canal system'.

A good detour off the normal canal routes and something quite different
Sep 2020
We were in two minds about a this detour off the Oxford Canal and a night in the Coventry Canal Basin but were glad we did it. The journey from Hawkesbury Junction is not pretty but is made quite interesting with a good guidebook e.g. Pearson’s which gives details of the buildings and sites of interest on the way. Some fairly tight challenging turns and bridges!

The Basin itself is well restored to how it would have looked in its working days. 48 hour and 7 day mooring are available. Despite being in a city it felt fairly secure with numerous CCTV cameras covering the area and many residential flats also facing it. An easy walk from here into the city for the cathedral, museum and shops. If you want something slightly different from the normal canal trips then it’s worth a visit!

Playwrights coffee shop is open from 8:30 most days located in the basin so if you are missing a good coffee fix then there’s another reason to go!

Canal walk
Aug 2020 • Couples
Walked the Coventry canal from Streethay, near Lichfield to Fazeley Junction, then across aqueduct 2 into Tamworth. The Canal takes you through the villages of Whittington & Hopwas. Nice countryside and canalside properties to admire. Through picturesque Hopwas Wood and onto Fazeley Junction. Local redevelopment on the canalside here for residential purposes. It branches here for the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal. We carried on our walk along the Coventry Canal over the beautiful aqueduct 2 into Tamworth where it gives you the out of town feeling. Reccommend a visit to all.

Exploring Coventry

Pretty quiet place, nice canal side walks and couple of minutes walk to town centre. Cafe by basin. Parking nearby and some lovely buildings on canal side.

Canal basin

Not really sure why this was on the Heritage open days, there were just a few barges moored up, nothing spectacular. There was a model railway exhibition but that didn’t interest me, don’t be put off if you like canals though.

Waste of a day.

Cruised our boat from Hawkesbury junction and then made the mistake of heading into Coventry to moor up in the basin. The canal is filthy, the views are dull, the basin is boring and in a fairly run down part of town. Hits some heavy objects thrown at us from the flats heading in and my wife and sister were advised to stay off the tow path for their own safety.

Only nice think I would say is that there is plenty of mooring available and turning is easy. There is also an interesting listed building on the canal side in the basin.

However regardless of the plus points we will not be heading back!

Desolate
Aug 2019 • Couples
We were the only visitors to the canal basin on bank Holiday Monday. with just a hairdresser and Latvian supermarket open. No little outlets, nowhere to get lunch. Just 5 narrow boats refilling water and emptying septic tanks. The toilets also locked
What a waste of a really valuable space. Bonus we didn't pay for the car park. Fortunate to get one star!

Ideal for us

Plenty of space to moor our narrowboat, well lit at night and very clean. Fantastic base to explore the city. The canal itself could do with a bit of attention but the basin is good.

Didn’t even stop
Apr 2019 • Couples
We visited Coventry today after travelling from where we were staying in Dudley for a short break with the plan of walking along the canal from Coventry Canal Basin.
When we arrived the area looked extremely run down and in no way inviting to visitors.
I wasn’t happy to park my car there, fearing it was at risk of being damaged or broken into (no evidence of that, just how I felt.)
As a result we decided that we had made a completely wasted journey and would have been much better exploring where we were staying and not wasting time and fuel to go to Coventry.

We then decided that we would have a look around the town area instead but were again disappointed. Signs to car parks appeared to just stop and one set of signs and clearly marked ‘turn right’ lane went directly into the wall of a building and not into a car park!!!

Coventry did not give us the slightest feeling that it welcomed visitors, especially those who drove! As a result we took an about turn and returned to Dudley which was beautiful and welcoming.

We will not be returning to Coventry in the future.
