According to the legend around the 13th century Lady Godiva rode around Coventry Streets naked with long blonde hair to cover her body. All people were told to not look at her as she came by but one man did and was struck blind and later got the name Peeping Tom ( not sure if his name was Tom).

Why our Cosmos tour guide told our group we "have to see this statue" will always be a mystery. It is a total waste of time. There are so many interesting things to see and do in Coventry that I cannot understand the obsession with a naked lady on a horse. Advice? Don't waste your time!

As I was born in Coventry I love our heritage the statue looks great & is always well maintained.. Enjoyed it more when it was set in the gardens before cathedral lanes was built but it's well place for all tourists to see & within view of our machanical Godiva Clock with Peeping Tom.

Troubled by the high rates of taxes imposed on her people by her husband Leofric, she implored Leofric to cut the high taxes. Being a typical male he said only if you bare your bum in public. The rest is history, as they say!

For anyone not familiar with the story there are several references to it throughout the city including reference to Peeping Tom and where both Lady Godiva and her husband the Earl of Merica are buried - one of Weatherspoons is named Earl of Mercia

For a few years Lady Godiva was under a canopy. It was quite oppressive and not very fitting for a lady who graciously helped the citizens of Coventry. I love the history of our City and I am proud to take people round showing them the three cathedrals (ok two are ruins). I like to talk about Holy Trinity and... More

She has been in Broadgate for as long as I can remember. She has always been the meeting point - (I'll see you by Godiva at....). To see her is a must (Along with Peeping Tom on the hour) when visiting CoventryCoventry
