A hidden gem.
Oct 2021
We stumbled across this place on a recent visit to Birmingham and it’s a hidden gem! I love anything retro and funky and this is the place. It was pretty busy ( this is a good sign) and everyone was having a good time. If you don’t like pinball or craft beer maybe it’s not for you, but if you like either or hopefully both then definitely seek this place out. You won’t be disappointed.

Cracking idea, needs better execution
Apr 2021 • Friends
I had heard about this place a few times over the years but never actually took the plunge to go. I love pinball, so on paper it’s pretty hard for this place to disappoint me. However, in reality it didn’t quite work out.

I’ll start with the good - I liked the fact that this place focused on different craft beers and had a lot of pinball machines to play on. The staff were fine too, they were attentive enough and welcomed people as they walked in.

The pinball machines themselves were excellent. We played a fair few games and really enjoyed them. They seem to actually be well looked after and were all working fine.

As for the bad - straight away you notice that the ambiance just isn’t there. I get that these sort of places are usually quite chilled out but for an establishment in this part of town I think that it could do with some jazzing up, especially when you have competing venues that execute this so well like the Flight Club for example. The overall feel of Tilt is quite tacky and makes a cheap impression, although it shouldn’t because these machines are worth a lot of money.

The place absolutely stinks of damp and other unpleasant odours which I won’t go into detail on. Downstairs in particular has a crazy amount of damp to the point where my asthmatic friend couldn’t even stay down there due to damp being a trigger for them.

Drinks wise, whilst I do agree that the craft beer thing is a good idea I think that it needs to be diversified more to attract a wider audience. We ordered a couple of ciders which weren’t pleasant at all. It wasn’t until we finished drinking that we realised one of the bottles was actually out of date. Maybe this is why it didn’t taste so good?

There seems to be an alternate sort of client that is attracted to this venue. If you are looking for somewhere a bit “rock vibe-ish” where you can just drink craft beer and play some awesome pinball machines then you’ll probably be just fine here. But if you want an experience that has more of an ambiance to it, this place is not for you.

It’s a cracking idea, no doubt about it. I just think that it’s executed quite poorly and needs a lot of work doing. If they were to gut the place out and make it more high end, focus on some banging cocktails and really showcase the craft beers then it could be a proper winner. I’d love to see this place thrive because it really does have potential.

Great craft beer range.

Located in the famous City Arcade is Tilt ,a wonderful craft beer bar my twin brother Stephen and I visited and what a great time we had.
Walking in and I knew I would enjoy my visit here, a light and airy interior, a cool ,small serving bar ,nice decor and furnishings, theres an impressive array of pinball machines in the back room and there's plenty of seating options spread throughout this bar, a very cool bar to unwind in.
We were here on a Thursday early afternoon, greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of the staff, after a quick study of their craft beers we both opted to have double Indian pale ale ( D.I.P.A ) and these were served in excellent condition, we just kicked back, chilled out and took in the great bar we were in.
My D.I.P.A was really good, strong ,consistent from the first sip till the last sup, a beer style not to rush but to savour but being in such a wonderful bar and enjoying a quality brew why would you want to rush anything.
These are my type of bars, unusual bars, nice staff and great beers, what more could you ask for.
We really enjoyed our beers in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting for a first time visit to Tilt we had a great time.
Tilt is easy to locate in City Arcade down Warwick Passage .
Opening hours are;
Monday to Thursday, 10am till 11pm.
Friday & Saturday, 10am till Midnight.
Sunday, 10am till 10pm.
A wonderful craft beers bar, most definitely well worth a visit if you're in the area.

TILT - Coffee and Craft Beer - What More Do You Need?
Aug 2020
TILT seemed, on paper, too good to be true. Craft beer? Check. Speciality coffee from renowned international roasters? Check. Fried chicken you can order (from boneheads to your table) Check. What the catch? Nothing - they pulled out all the stops.

Based in the city arcade, there is the front entrance with steps and a side entrance for disabled/wheelchair access. There's plenty of room - and an upstairs space too.

The staff were super approachable and knowledgeable - there's no one looking down their nose at you here.

The beer on offer is fantastic. They have pilsners, stouts, ales, IPAs and sours - all from a rotating range of international and national breweries. The beers on offer are quality - and this is reflected in the price. It's well worth paying a little more for a fantastic pint. I had a hazy IPA from a brewery in Oslo (the name of which escapes me), it was 7% - but like straight-up mango juice. Very easy to drink given the %. The beers are served in pints, two-thirds and halves. The average cost is around £5-7.

The coffee is worth a visit alone. It is great to see somewhere offer proper speciality (or third-wave if you like that term) coffee - and serve it well. The transparency of their set up really says a lot about the care they put into it. For filter coffee, they use EK43s and BWT filtered water (added magnesium to help with that sweet sweet extraction). I had a batch-brew ugandan semi-anaerobic natural process from Keen Coffee (based in the Netherlands). The cup was very well balanced - no sign of over-extraction, no hollowness or emptiness of an under-extracted cup, and no funky earthy taste of a badly processed natural. A bargain at £3. They have retail bags of beans on offer too. Again, they look to showcase a wide variety of international roasters so you're sure to get a new experience each time. Everyone's favourite espresso-based coffees are also on offer!

The hot chocolate was also very good - no cheap powder here! You choose the chocolate (50%, 70% or 85% cocoa) and it only sets you back £3.

You can also order fried chicken from Boneheads directly to your table. What a set-up and a great way to support two local businesses at once.

Heaven with Pinball Machines
Nov 2019
Almost reason enough to move back to Birmingham. A wonderful mix of proper ale, proper tea and coffee, and proper pinball machines. Wide choice of machines ranging from latest to older, 'vintage' models. Relaxed atmosphere. A great way to get rid of your change.

Incredible hospitality!
Jul 2020 • Couples
Partner an I left it a couple days to gauge the tides and atmosphere post lightening of restrictions and honestley could not fault service, beer quality and socially distanced ballbearing based entertainment. We seemed to catch staff within the process of closing down which from experience would make me feel awkward but genuinley was made to feel like anything was not too much, which was a breath of fresh air considering the weekends business. Loved it before and has impressed yet again post the sabbatical!

Happy place

Visited tilt last year and soon fell in love with the place. It’s bubbling with life and laughter. The staff are welcoming and good at what they do and the coffee is to die for. I’ve never felt truly impressed by a cup of coffee until I found tilt. This will be my go-to coffee place every time I visit Birmingham. Highly recommend :)
