Kwanzaa started as an African American celebration by Mulana Karenga. He used Kwanza meaning in first fruits ie harvest in an added an extra A. Pan African congress Movement organised Kwanzaa in dufferent cities and the Birmingham one was heldvat The Legacy which was previousky known as the Drum. It was a cool , speeches, dance, ritual, food and marketplace.

The Drum has lost its beat!!
Mar 2017 • Business
The drum is now closed. It has closed due to cash shortages and has been so since late 2016.

Letters pile up by the door, and a security guard frequently checks the building for damage.

I saw knaan play at that venue.

Check online for more information.

5stars given for the memories.

Let's Dance
Oct 2015 • Family
I've been involvedv with the Drum since its conception as I was Secretary of African and Caribbean Artists Network working in Newtown during City Challenge when it was a toss up betweeen using the building for Bingo or Black Culture. I go there quite often to meet friends, exhibition poetry event and the last time for GAP launch. The participants danced and we had a preview of their weekly tv Series. A lovely building, friendly staff, reasonable prices, good bar and restaurant.

went here for my grand daughters dance presentation. Did not know the place existed, small theatre ideal for small shows. Only down side is it is too hot in there, seriously need air conditioning, the show was 70+ children, dancing for 90 minutes, so hot for them, and the audience were getting very restless.
Apart from that it was a great little venue.

Great customer service!
Mar 2015 • Friends
Went here to see Ameriie (R&B singer). The venue is an intercultural arts centre and has lots of things going on. Bought the tickets online and then found out it was a standing only concert and due to a back problem I would find this difficult. I contacted them and was told to speak with the duty manager when we arrived and they would arrange a chair for me. Arrived and spoke with Chantelle who has fantastic customer service skills, nothing was too much trouble for her! Chairs at a standing concert can cause a problem so they do limit them, but we were placed near the back but could still see the stage.
The venue: Free parking is very close on a housing estate. downstairs bar and seating area, they were also selling food (looked like chicken, rice and peas but did not try it). Small lemonade (bottled Schweppes) was £1.25. Prices the same in the upstairs bar. We bought a bottle of water (Evian) which was £1.45. I thought this was very reasonable as have been to other venues that charged £4 for a bottle of water!
Toilets were clean, plenty of hot water and loo roll.
Would definitely go there again. Thanks again to Chantelle for your care and consideration.
