Tiny venue. (which means it's easy to meet the band members.) Perfect for intimate shows. I went to the Swim Deep gig in April 2015. But the sound system is kind of bad.

Such a cool venue, decor is awesome, entrance to the stage is a door that looks like a bookcase, super cool. Staff were all really nice, drinks aren't too expensive, sound is great. A little out of the way but nothing too extreme.

This is a really cool venue and has a great atmosphere. We always keep our eyes on their listings now as they have some great bands and club nights.
This is an up and coming place and is easy to get to and along with the HMV and Academies is another good night out to catch live bands

Could be great, but falls short

This venue is located within the Custard Factory via a walkway through the building on Gibb Street (pedestrianised).
It's annexed to (and owned by?) Alfie Birds, and as a gig venue, it could be great - but is let down by a couple of things. Firstly, the acoustics. There are none - it's just a big (and cold at this time of year) room. If you just want loud, fine. But any more finesse than that and you'll be left wanting. Secondly, capacity. It's supposed to have a capacity of 400. According to door staff, the night I visited, there were 350 in attendance. So it was shoulder to shoulder - fine if you're over 6 foot tall, but if you want to "see" a band, forget it. (I'd suggest that the max comfortable capacity should be 250 - but of course there'd be less revenue then). And with only 1 small bar, (and only 1 person serving at that bar) you'll struggle to get a drink. Which brings me to my last gripe - the toilets! They're communal (ladies & gents together) which in itself isn't a problem, if they're clean and well maintained - but they're not. The evening I visited, many of the "facilities" (toilets/urinals/sink) were broken/out of order (even the sink in the disabled toilet had been smashed). And the smell was - well, best left undescribed.
This could be a great venue, but after being open less than a year, it's sad to see it deteriorate so quickly. And if these are the standards set by the venue, I'd be reluctant to visit the bar/restaurant for a meal.
All in all it's just a big room for bands. Don't expect any frills - there are none!

Great Live Music Venue

At the heart of Brum's Custard Factory development you find The Oobleck, not yet a high profile venue and first time I've heard of it when I checked gigs for one of my favourite bands. Well worth checking it out tho', it's a great preferring space with a good stage and excellent sound. Small bar and a dedicated merch space too. Rather chilly at this time of year. Judging by the forward gig listings this is set to be one of the top venues. Icing on the cake it's right next door to Alfie Bird's bar & eatery which is also well worth a visit for good food & cheers before a gig at The Oobleck.
