Birmingham Yes, Gifts No.
Feb 2020
The Birmingham tourist Gift shop sold me a supposedly Linen tea towel of Birmingham. It looks fine on display, BUT BEWARE, it is not Linen at all, its made of polypropylene and thus is not water absorbent so completely useless as a tea towel or any other form of towel. It is also NOT made in Birmingham or any other related area. It's made in central CHINA.

What a CON, it and other items I purchased have no relation to Birmingham what so ever. With several manufacturers of Linen and printers in the Birmingham area why could it not be made in the city it is advertising?

It was disappointing that the staff seem to know very little about the City they work in, why?

We found the most helpful man was a security guard near the lift.

Would I recommend the tourist office or the gifts they sell NO.
Would I recommend Birmingham as a city, with new plazas, Library, Trams etc YES.

Staff were very helpful to me. They gave me maps and directed me to locations I hadn't heard of. Would definitely recommend. Easy to find on the ground floor of the stunning library.

Was interested in going on the back to backs tour that comes up as a top thing to do in Birmingham on trip advisor. Couldn’t find any leaflet or info on it in the foyer so thought I’d ask at the desk. I explained what I was interested in and was told “it’s on line”. I asked if it was a National Trust attraction and se said she didn’t know. If She then got the website up and showed it to me. I asked if it was in central Birmingham and she didn’t seem to know but told me that I was in central Birmingham. I said I knew that I was but was trying to establish how far away the attraction was.
In order not to waste any more time, I thanked her and picked up a free map. Upon looking at the map - the back to backs houses are within walking distance of the library.
Still unclear why there are no leaflets or info on this event at the Tourist Information Centre and why a staff member was unable to assist. It is National Trust and it is very popular by the reviews out there so something that needs sorting I feel

One of the largest cities in the UK and NO tourist information whatsoever.

After a fruitless search up and down New Street, we went into New Street Station where we asked a couple of staff members there. We were told No tourist information as the office is now closed due to the redevelopment of the surrounding area. I know we came early 25th April but would have thought there would be something wit available giving details of the surrounding attractions of this busy city. Very disappointing.

Our last night was in this hole, there is a Tourist Info Center but no one knows where it is because it dose not exist. Yes. there is but just use the available computers, can do that on my phone, without success. Went to the desk and ask for help, answer "No we don't book hotels go to the computers. Thank you so bloody much. After "four" hours of walking around we found an hotel and for close to 100.00 pounds found something a 3 star hotel was a joke I'd rather say one and a half if they were lucky. Birmingham get with it and open up to the world. I travel a lot and lived in England for 2 years, Birmingham good bye,

Birmingham must believe that they don't need a proper TIC

We arrive by train for a few days in the National Trust Back to Backs, first job go to the Tourist Information Office, follow signposts and find that it has closed down. We look and are lost, a Big Issue Seller comes to our rescue and tells us about a lady at the railway station, we find her {good job it wasn't a Sunday] she did her best and suggested that we visited the the other site nearby, more helpfull but obviously embarrased staff. This is meant to be the 2nd City of England, the people are friendly it probably a fascinating city and the places that we visited confirmed this, the jewellery quarter is a must as is the pen museum, you should visit the Back to Backs but the area around the Hippodrome can get noisy at weekends. If you want theatre tickets hotel accomodation, bus time tables or the like apparently there is a new TIC at the Airport. I believe the TIC staff have been told it's cut backs, I feel sorry for anybody in the tourist industry struggling to get their name out there when the city doesn't see the need to help.
I have just visited a town with a population of 15000[Dorchester Dorset] and the TIC was alive and the Till was taking money! Very sad, I wonder if there will be a reply.

Look here I go again,!! travel to a city and miss the best place because the information is full of in your face because you have not bought a ticket, and worst ask them about the curry trail in Sparkhill. I did and was told to thing again as they could suggest a couple of places in the city centre. Let me tell you get a taxi to stoney Lane in Sparkhill or even Stratford Road also in Sparkhill, loads of Brillant curry houses. Some of whom you have no bars but you can buy a drink in the local take away and bring into the curry house, brillant food local company and cheap drink. Warning on fridays and saturdays these places have a waiting list some of them have a long line of people outside. Its a small area of a few roads Loads of currie houses allmost next door to each other with plenty of choices .
I have eaten here so many times and will continue to do so. Normal security rules apply not suggest that you have a walk around this area after Dark. Go for the food the experiance its Brillant, its cheap and a lovely change the meal. if you like a very good curry take the tip go to the curry centre in Birmingham in Sparkhill, by taxi each way. Its a wonderful night out. I know cause I grew up here..
