Construction of The American Fountain was completed in1887, and it was a gift to the town from George Childs, an American Newspaper publisher. It is built in Victorian Gothic style. Above each face there is a clock, and this fountain (which is not now in working order) has, amongst other things, two quotes from Shakespeare relating to the drinking of... More

Standing at the corner of the market square, the fountain is a main attraction as the visitor walks through the town

A good ft from a wealthy American in celebration of Shakespeare. Small but worth a short walk from the main attractions to see

To get to the fountain, you would go halfway down Henley Street and turn right onto Meer Street. This leads you to Wood Street where you turn right. Then you turn left on Rother Street and it is situated on your left as you walk down this street. The American Fountain in Stratford Upon Avon was a gift by an... More

The American Fountain (1887) is a Gothic style drinking fountain, horse trough and clock tower made of sandstone and granite located on Rother Square. Erected in memory of Shakespeare, it is also known as “The Shakespeare Memorial Fountain” and “Clock Tower”. It was a gift from George Childs who was a wealthy American. It was presented to the town in... More

This is a rather unremarkable piece of architecture. You'd walk past it and not blink an eye, so it is with a level of amusement that I note it is listed as a 'a thing to do' lol. Go for the smallest of walks round the town and you will see it.

This fountain was a gift to the town from a millionaire Philadelphian, George W Childs. It is pretty but nothing special in my opinion.
