staycation ideas attractions
Due to our Staycation cut short due to lockdown the next day... We spent our last day wondering around Stratford Upon Avon..
We found a few museums and attractions already shut due to lockdown. 🤔
But set back in a little alley way underneath an arch of an old building in Sheep Street you can Step back in time at Tudor world
A wonderful little Tudor museum that is great value for money
Tudor World museum is situated right in the centre of the beautiful Town of Stratford upon Avon, just metres from the world famous RSC. Set within an historic 16th century grade 2* building once occupied by William Shrieve an archer.
Discover the secret lives of the Tudors and what life was really like during the time of William Shakespeare; Francis Drake; Elizabeth I and Henry VIII.
The museum has no funding or grants and relies completely on you the visitor to help in the upkeep of the historic building.
Despite limited resources, this plucky museum tries to put in as much 'punch' as possible.
The museum is suitable for all ages, but you might wish to warn children there are figures in some of the exhibits to enhance the experience and atmospheric lighting.
There are lots of interactive elements: from a touchscreen; videos to choose from; a feast to sit out; a thrown perch on and a four poster bed to lie on. You can take part in a written witch trial; go in the stocks as a drunk or try your hand at quill writing in the school room.
The museum is very old (more than 400 years) with low beams, uneven floors and stairs. The tour is by the light of a lantern. For this reason it may not suitable for those with mobility problems, impaired vision or those that are claustrophobic or nervous. Dogs are not permitted.
And if you have some time to kill in the evening why not take in one of there #ghosttours 👻
Ghost tours take place after the museum is closed and the lights switched off! The guide will relate stories and sightings within the building by lantern light.
The tours have been running since 2002 and the only tour to take place within one of the historic buildings of Stratford..
There is also a wonderful little gift shop for a few souvenirs.
So why not step back in time... We highly recommend a visit to this museum.

Really enjoyed the Ghost Tour! Definitely recommend!
We were the only two people on the tour, but that just made it even spookier and more atmospheric!
We had a friendly rapport with the tour guide, who was conversational and informative as well as suitably spooky when regaling us with anecdotes of the various paranormal occurrences within the building - as well as stories from his own wealth of experience in this ancient haunted site.
The guide was very skilful in his storytelling, and the tour included no tacky gimmicks or special effects, it completely relies on the near-total darkness, the ambience of the old building, and the narrative talent of the guide to create a deeply spooky atmosphere.
One warning - we went in January and it was VERY cold inside the building, especially as the tour involves standing around for 15 minutes at a time. It is also conducted in near total darkness and the tour guide punctuates his narrative with occasional actions that will make you jump, and does turn the lantern out at one point.
All in all thoroughly enjoyable, a memorable experience, and a privilege to witness a skilled storyteller practise his craft.

I visited this place with a friend for the Virtual Ghost Tour last night during this tough time of covid. I’m happy to say It was both exciting and worth every penny. I urge locals/visitors to Stratford-upon-Avon to visit this place and support a locally ran business for what is an amazing hidden gem in the town for a very reasonable price.
Whether you are interested in history, ghosts and the paranormal or just after a different day or evening out. I highly recommend visiting!!! For the price of a pint (or 2), you can be immersed with this building and walk away with more than before you visited.

After the virtual ghost tour, I had a nice chat with the gentleman on the front desk (I can’t recall his name, this visit happened on the 15th July around 7pm) - nice chap, could of spoken to him for ages!

To sum up, go! Support this local business and you will not be disappointed. Go! Go! Go!

Together with a friend I joined the Shakespeare tour and the Ghost tour. The Shakespeare tour was just amazing. The guide was so enthousiastic and funny, would 100% recommend! The ghost tour worked out less well, the groups entered too quickly after each other so we were constantly waiting for each other and hearing each others videos. I think if they schedule more time in between groups going in it would work way better.

Good experience. The tour is done virtually with QR codes. It's a story telling experience which was very good. An amazing building, good lot of history and the staff were very happy to tell us about their own paranormal experiences there.
£15 for two people and it lasts approx 45 mins to 60 mins. Lights left of for safety reasons so you have the opportunity to read all the history boards and see the displays. If you want something a little unique to do in Stratford-upon-Avon then sign up!

Staff were incredibly passionate and knowledgeable, the museum itself was brilliant, lots of rooms full of interesting and authentic looking Tudor decor.
There was a Father Christmas reading stories to the children when we were there, he was very friendly and had a real beard! He told us a few ghost stories and was clearly very passionate about what he did.
It’s not a huge museum so doesn’t take very long to look around, but for £7 you can’t ask for better.
Would highly recommend if you like a bit of history and a few spooky stories!

What a great find, this museum has so much in it. You wall through the Tudor times and can learn as much as you want to by reading, listening, smelling and interacting with the museum. It's not guided, do you just walk through yourself.
We spent approx an hour through the rooms, and then had a good chat with the guy on the entrance who knew loads about Tudor history.
For £6 per person (some concessions) it's good value

Although quite dark, the ghost tour wasn’t scary enough and could be better if they got more into it with characters or someone shuffling in the background etc, not have the girl tour guide giggling and maybe be more sinister. Just a suggestion as the website suggested it was very scary and not for faint hearted :). A self funded museum which during the day looks great for children and history so would recommend to families. Worth a visit x

We visited Tudor World for the evening ghost tour and returned the following day to visit the museum. This showed us two completely different sides to the museum and would recommend that you experience both!
The ghost tour was brilliant and our guide Winifred was absolutely amazing - she was in character from the moment she greeted us at the gate and was fab throughout. The stories were very interesting and we were lucky enough to experience some unexplained noises. We had a great time and I would definitely book this again if we return to the area (which we likely will!).
The museum during the day is a completely different experience and again definitely worth a visit. It is very informative and also interactive, giving you the opportunity to write with a quill and experience the smells from Tudor times. The historical figure you are given at the start is also a fab touch. In addition we turned up an hour earlier than our reservation and we were accommodated with no concerns, which we were very grateful for.
We had a great experience here and I would recommend everyone visits if in the area. The museum is great for both adults and children and the ghost tours are a fun experience for those looking for something a bit different or if you are interested in the paranormal.
Thankyou Tudor World and thankyou Winifred for a spooktacular evening!

Ok, am going to make friends and enemies here! Stratford upon Avon is all about the Bard and everything is trademarked to him (even the sandwiches), interestingly the Tudor dynasty supported him as much as he supported them interesting bedfellows? Interpret this any way you like but hidden down a side street with little fanfare is this brilliant museum. The entrance has some highly amusing FAQ which have real and sarcastic replies. For me this really set the tone. This is the antithesis of stuffiness a very informative warts and all (humorous in parts) journey through this social affirming dynasty. You are given a name card on your way in giving you some pointers as to who your character is with the opportunity to fill in the gaps as you go round (answers at the end,,A brilliant idea. I was fortunate to get Tom my historic idol. Unlike any other museum I have been to you are encouraged to get into character, wear hats and crowns, write with a quill (harder than you think) and take as many photos as you like! Yep really. A complete breath of fresh air in a commercially serious part of the world. Very reasonable entrance fee. I love the tudors and studied Shakespeare. The life times defined both and I learnt more here than anything else on offer....just saying. A must visit.
