Take a scenic ferry trip across the River Avon to the Waterside gardens by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and recreation grounds. In operation since 1937, and fully rebuilt in 2010 by Avon Boating, 'Malvolio' as it is named has ferried thousands of passengers back and forth over the River Avon. As one of the last remaining hand wound chain ferries in the country you will get to see a unique angle of the river with views downriver to the Holy Trinity Church and upstream to the RST.

A quirky little thing that drops in and out of use and saves you from walking the bridges. Just a simple tourist attraction operated by a couple of young men on the day of our visit. Fun way over the water for ten minutes, not...More

Okay so its only a ferry but it is unusual and quite fun, and a quirky thing for visitors to the town. Plus it saves a great amount of time trekking to and from the bridges!

Fun short trip across the river and very reasonable. Busy and had to queue but only for 10 minutes as it is the best way to get across and saved walking around.

The River Avon Chain Ferry is under repair, but the site is well signed and all around are attractive views and it is a pleasant walk.

Great for taking photos of Holy Trinity Church but be quick as you will over the river in a trice. Unique experience worth doing for 50p.

there seems to be no set time for the Chain ferry to run! You can cross one way then find it is closed for your return trip . It IS a great time saver IF you can find it running , but if it not...More

In a beautiful setting on the Avon a stonees through from the Royal Shakepeare Theatre you'll find this grand vessel. A hand-driven chain ferry which does the journey across the river in a couple of minutes! Hadn't planned the visit but enjoyed it!

This is a fun and leisurely way to cross the Avon. 50p is the cost for what is, admittedly, a very short trip. I did feel a little bit sorry for the poor driver who has to manually crank the chain mechanism for hour after...More

This made a fascinating way to cross the river & made a change from using one of the bridges! The small charge incurred is worth it for the novelty of the crossing.

A walk along the river, a 50p ferry ride to the opposite bank, into the dirty duck, a pint of pig's ear. Job done.
