Take a scenic ferry trip across the River Avon to the Waterside gardens by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and recreation grounds.

In operation since 1937, and fully rebuilt in 2010 by Avon Boating, 'Malvolio' as it is named has ferried thousands of passengers back and forth over the River Avon. As one of the last remaining hand wound chain ferries in the country you will get to see a unique angle of the river with views downriver to the Holy Trinity Church and upstream to the RST.

Walking from the basin over the footbridge to the south side of the river you can turn right and take a leisurely walk alongside the river. The chain ferry is a convenient and cheap way to cross to the other side of the river instead of having to retrace your steps. I found the ferry 'captain' easy to chat to... More

A novel way to cross the river Avon. A nice experience and it only costs 50p. It's also a good way to take some photos of the river from a different angel.

What a charming little ferry to take you across the Avon and only 50p. The kids loved it. Really friendly man operating it as well, to think he had been pulling that ferry backwards and forwards for however long and yet he treated everyone like it was his first time. Charming, we definitely use again.

Only 50p to cross the Avon by this traditional chain ferry. Good fun and a great way to get to the other side of the river quickly.

Having parked near the lock basin in Stratford we had a leisurely walk first to the waterfront RSC Café for refreshment and then on to the manual chain ferry which took us across the river to the riverside path back to the old tramway bridge. The fare was on only 50p and well worth the experience.

For 50p this is a must.A small foot ferry taking about 25 people over the river Avon by a young man winding the chain! Well worth it!

Great way to cross the river at only 50p per person and the dog was not only welcomed, even made a fuss of and travelled for free.

Having walked across the fields on a sunny day took the quick route back for 50p each . Friendly boatman turns the handle to move the ferry across by chain .

An unusual ride, we were using it to cross the river. Another family went straight back and did not get off they seemed to really enjoy it. It was only fifty pence, so quite cheap. The ferryman who turned the mechanism by hand needs plenty stamina to do the crossing all day.

Sweet little chain ferry, only 50p. Pretty views across Avon. Nice way to cross the river. Does not take long so if you miss it, it will be back soon.
