Take a scenic ferry trip across the River Avon to the Waterside gardens by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and recreation grounds.

In operation since 1937, and fully rebuilt in 2010 by Avon Boating, 'Malvolio' as it is named has ferried thousands of passengers back and forth over the River Avon. As one of the last remaining hand wound chain ferries in the country you will get to see a unique angle of the river with views downriver to the Holy Trinity Church and upstream to the RST.

Frank took us across the Avon, a gentle pleasant trip from one side of the river to the other. A touch of old world charm.

Only costs 50p per person and is a fun quick way to cross the river. The driver even let one of the passengers wind the chain. Definitely worth a go.

Great option for a circular walk along the riverside and then back into town. All for £0.50p per person. Only takes 5 minutes.

Cheap way to cross the river to save the long walk back to the main car park. Only had a short wait to get on the boat. Slightly grumpy boat operator!

We love travelling across the river on this chain ferry. It is an historic way of crossing and the price is very reasonable to keep it going and the upkeep it no doubt needs.

I found it accidentally as I was walking around the city, and I am really happy I did. All the boats are named after Shakespeare's female heroes, like Juliet, Viola, Ophelia, and so on... A nice surprise, and if you like nature, even more!

We often park in the recreation ground and use the ferry to visit the town. It's nice to cross the river by boat as people did in Tudor times and it's only 50p.

How lovely to find this ferry. A true piece of history and very reasonably priced. We enjoyed our crossing very much.
