This is a remnant of the past - before there were so many bridges over the Avon. At 50p it's a nice trip to include on a river walk.

Use the chain ferry (50p a trip) to cross the river Avon. Lots of fun. Saves you a short walk. The ferry men (never women, I am sure that's an oversight) are always delightful.

Combine this with a walk around the Rec (park), over the tram bridge, through the old town or along the river by the theatre for an easy summer stroll around Stratford.

A fun thing to do; a 5 minute crossing of the River Avon. The ferryman turns a handle with draws an underwater chain through a winch mechanism to move the small ferry across the river. If you are feeling energetic you could have a go!

This would have been great for us on a Saturday afternoon because of our desired route but it was not available. It was a shame as other visitors seemed to be waiting to cross the river and have a short cut to our destinations.

We didn't actually use it, but it was nice to see it in action and know it is being well used. Had a sit on a bench near as a lovely afternoon and watched all the action. Learn't a bit more about it when we...More
