Take a scenic ferry trip across the River Avon to the Waterside gardens by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and recreation grounds.

In operation since 1937, and fully rebuilt in 2010 by Avon Boating, 'Malvolio' as it is named has ferried thousands of passengers back and forth over the River Avon. As one of the last remaining hand wound chain ferries in the country you will get to see a unique angle of the river with views downriver to the Holy Trinity Church and upstream to the RST.

An unusual ride, we were using it to cross the river. Another family went straight back and did not get off they seemed to really enjoy it. It was only fifty pence, so quite cheap. The ferryman who turned the mechanism by hand needs plenty stamina to do the crossing all day.

Sweet little chain ferry, only 50p. Pretty views across Avon. Nice way to cross the river. Does not take long so if you miss it, it will be back soon.

This is a great way to get across the river. The prices are very cheap. To say only one man turns the crank he must be very tired at the end of the day. I would recommend this journey.

For 50p get pulled across the Avon taking in the beautiful views. Not to be missed. The crossing only takes 5 mins so there is no queueing.

Cute little chain ferry that crosses the River Avon. Polite guys that wind you across and at only 50p each a bargain by today's standards. Beautiful setting and well worth a go.

Only 50p to cross the Avon on the chain ferry and avoid a long walk around the river. Well worth it just for the experience.

We always take new visitors to the chain ferry for the experience. Kids love it. A short but fun way to cross the river and to get views up and down the river.

The chain ferry is a pedestrian ferry that holds about 15 people. It costs 50p and takes about 10 minutes. It is reportedly the oldest chain ferry in Europe. Access it along the river walking path.

This is a fun way to cross the River Avon very quickly from Waterside to the Recreation Ground and, of course, vice versa. Looking upstream there are great views of The Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Tramway Bridge and Cox's Yard and downstream of Holy Trinity Church the weirs and Lucy's Mill. The Ferry was built in 1937 and has been... More
