Take a scenic ferry trip across the River Avon to the Waterside gardens by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and recreation grounds.

In operation since 1937, and fully rebuilt in 2010 by Avon Boating, 'Malvolio' as it is named has ferried thousands of passengers back and forth over the River Avon. As one of the last remaining hand wound chain ferries in the country you will get to see a unique angle of the river with views downriver to the Holy Trinity Church and upstream to the RST.

An age-old Stratford feature that is not only useful but quirky and fun too. The ferry boat is attached to a chain so that the boatman, for a very small fee, can wind you back and forth across the Avon between the town and the meadows opposite. Use it and the Tramway Bridge upstream to make a superbly scenic circular... More

I have always loved this little chain ferry, and it really is the quickest way to cross the river - cheap too!

went on this quirky ferry across the Avon. Powered by a human being. The 'captain' was a student . Very chatty and pleasant. Only 50p to cross. Fun

A chain ferry I hear you cry. What's that?? Well it's a boat that crosses the river by way of a hand crank that is turned whilst you sit. Now be warned it doesn't take that long and it's not really the Dover to Calais crossing but for 50p it's worth a visit.

As this is the only remaining chain ferry in the U.K. it was a privilege to ride on it.The man who operates this ferry was very knowledgable and even took a photo of myself with my partner.

can't beat the 50p price per person to have a short trip across the Avon. Claims to be last working chain ferry and worth it.

At 50p it was worth crossing the river in a hand chain ferry - quite unusual - quite busy and somebody is making some seriuos money here!

Walking from the basin over the footbridge to the south side of the river you can turn right and take a leisurely walk alongside the river. The chain ferry is a convenient and cheap way to cross to the other side of the river instead of having to retrace your steps. I found the ferry 'captain' easy to chat to... More
