About
This fifteenth-century, charming thatched cottage was the childhood home of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare's wife. It is here that Anne was born and raised and where the young Shakespeare would have visited her during the early part of their relationship. Experienced guides share tales about the Hathaway family who lived here from the mid-1500s to the early 1900s. See original furniture including the Hathaway bed and the courting settle. Wander through acres of beautiful cottage gardens and orchards, and explore the sculpture trail inspired by Shakespeare’s plays. Please note, the last entry is 30 minutes before closing.

    Very interesting
My wife and I visited Anne Hathaway's Cottage during a long weekend visit to Warwickshire based in Stratford-upon Avon. We booked in advance and walked along the footpath from the town centre, which is easy to follow. It's about a 1-mile walk. The local staff were fantastic and very informative. So we found this visit more interesting than the previous one to Shakespeare's birthplace (bought on a combined ticket). The gardens are also worth strolling around. Highly recommended if you are visiting Stratford.

Serene place, one of the highlights of our trip to Stratford upon Avon
We really enjoyed our trip here. We were lucky enough to visit in beautiful weather so were able to fully enjoy our walk around the garden and the sculpture trail. The cottage is beautiful in its simplicity. The staff were knowledgeable about the cottage and Anne Hathaway’s family and we found them engaged and helpful. We had a coffee from the little kiosk in the garden and then walked 5-10 minutes to The Bell pub nearby where we enjoyed lunch. Found parking easy at the pay and display next to the cottage. Our visit to Stratford upon Avon would have felt incomplete without a visit here.
Thank you for your review. We were pleased to hear that you had such a lovely visit and that the weather was good for you. We will pass on your positive comments to our guides.

    Beautiful cottage and brilliant guides
A must visit if you're in Strafford Upon Avon. We enjoyed this the most of the 3 (shakespeare's birthplace, shakespeare's new place and the cottage). Lovely grounds and the guides are excellent. You can tell they enjoy what they do and they make the experience.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your visit and we are so pleased to hear that you had such an enjoyable and informative time. We will pass on your complimentary comments to our guiding colleagues.

    Beautiful place
Lovely historic thatched cottage. Actually bigger than I expected. It's quite a substantial building as extensions were added to the original dwelling. Absolutely don't miss a visit. The house and gardens are beautiful and the guides were excellent and very happy to explain the history and answer questions. There's a small hut selling refreshments/ice creams etc and a large gift shop.
Thank you for your review. We were happy to hear that you had such an informative and enjoyable visit to Anne Hathaway's Cottage. To receive such positive feedback is very rewarding and we will be sure to share this with our Guiding colleagues who love to share their knowledge about the house and the Hathaway family who lived here for so many generations.

    Anne Hathaway's Cottage
What a beautiful place. We were blown away by this beautiful house and gardens. From the moment we walked in everyone was so welcoming. Although it is March and the gardens were not in full bloom we still found them to be captivating and extremely well cared for. The house itself was brought to life by the very knowledgeable volunteers and staff who made our visit very special by sharing all they knew about the house and family in a friendly manner. We purchased the year long pass and can not wait to return in the summer to see the garden in full bloom and hopefully purchase a plant or two. Thank you so much for a memorable visit ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you for your review. With several hundred years of history, we try and make the visitors' experience and visits to the Shakespeare family homes as engaging as possible and our team of staff and volunteers definitely help with that. We are pleased to hear that you had an enjoyable and interesting visit and look forward to welcoming you back in the summer.

    Lovely staff and interesting visit
Such a beautiful house and gardens. We took our dog and she loved walking round the sculpture park and gardens, and me and the husband took turns viewing the house. Staff were all so nice and made the effort to chat and tell us interesting things about the place. We had tea and biscuits at the shed and was very good and decent price. Please note there is a charge on the car park
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your visit and we are so pleased to hear that you, your husband and also your dog had such an enjoyable time!

    Beautiful, calming & quintessentially British
We visited late morning and was surprised at how quiet it was. Parking was very close and convenient. The whole site is very picturesque, maintained to a high standard. We walked around the grounds first. There are sculptures, fruit trees and Shakespeare quotes everywhere. It's not very clear on which direction to go to see the sculptures, I witnessed many people walking straight past without seeing them. Luckily for us we did experience them. We stopped for some refreshments, there's is a very small shop in the gardens. We had pressed apple juice made with apples from the orchards at the cottage, which was a nice touch. As we arrive at the cottage door we are greeted by a member of staff who gives a very knowledgeable talk about the history of the property. You are free to walk around inside but there are more tour guides with information, so you are stopped often and moved on, i feel this keeps the flow of people more in order. The cottage was originally opened up to the public many years ago with the idea that people were so fascinated with Shakespeare that they would come and visit even though it was not his family home and it's still working to this day, people visiting for the same reason. It's a beautiful setting and an enjoyable experience.
Thank you for your review. With several hundred years of history, we try and make the visitors' experience and visits to Anne Hathaway's Cottage and the other Shakespeare family homes as engaging as possible for everyone. We are pleased to hear that you had an enjoyable and interesting visit.

    Good but expensive.
My wife and I walked here from the Town Centre (approx a mile and a half). It was good to learn about the History and the staff seem to be very knowledgeable about the area and Cottage. The Garden looks nice but is small and the walks around the orchard, in our opinion, is just trees and a few statues. We were charged the full Entrance price even though we are O.A.P's, but that is our own fault and should have checked whether they have a Concessionary price, which they do have, but it was not offered either. Our personal view is that the Entrance price of £14.95 each is expensive for what is there even though the Tickets last for 12 months. I suppose that is how they justify the price, that you can come back free of charge but for us it would involve a 350 mile 'round trip'. So I do not think we will be back. So all in all, a 'one off' experience that we are unlikely to repeat even though we have paid for the next 12 months. To my wife and I it is just an opportunity to 'fleece' the genuine Tourist as in this town we have found that anything to do with William Shakespeare tends to double or even treble the price! We have marked four stars as we did enjoy our visit but as we have now seen it and had the experience we probably will not be back. We visited midweek and outside of School Holidays
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your visit to Anne Hathaway's Cottage. We value the opinions of our visitors and will always look at ways to improve our offer. Concerning your comments on our ticket price, we believe this reflects the quality of the experience we offer, including the opportunity to explore the places that influenced the world’s greatest writer. As an independent charity, the income generated from visitors helps us to continue to preserve these special properties and conserve our collection for the benefit of all. Our current concessions policy for tickets is listed on our website but does not include a specific concession for OAP.s hence the reason it was not offered to you. We thank you for your visit and hope that this has not spoiled your enjoyment of your time at Anne Hathaway's Cottage.

    Anne Hathaway's Cottage
We had a smashing time at Anne Hathaway's Cottage. We bought the Story Ticket from a charming lady called Charlotte who was very patient with us. When we got to the cottage we were met by a lady called Kate and a gentleman called Harry. They both explained the history of the cottage in detail and gave us a very good safety briefing as well. We loved the interior of the cottage going back in time through the centuries. We descended into the kitchen to Harry and Kate in the kitchen describing tudor cooking methods. The site is wonderful in lovely weather and everyone is so kind and very happy to answer questions.

Peaceful, serene and a wonderful place to visit
We were lucky, the weather was really nice, we visited on a ‘non bank holiday’ so people were at work or at school so there were no crowds. We decided to walk from the town centre and that was a nice part of the experience. It didn’t take long to get there (25 mins) and it was a part of the experience, leaving the town and walking out into the countryside. Everything about the cottage has been maintained to the highest standards by the Trust. Their staff are an absolute credit, the grounds so welcoming and an absolute delight. Like many, we purchased the Shakespeare Story ticket which means we can return within 12 months and we will. Just have to see if we can get lucky again with the weather and avoiding the crowds.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The "cottage" is actually pretty large with plenty to see both inside and out. The guides were friendly and extremely informative. There is a sculpture garden as well as the house and gardens and there is a very pleasant cafe just across the road. My advice would be to buy the annual ticket which gives entry to 5 or 6 Shakespeare trail properties and (as the name suggests) lasts a full year. This gives substantial savings if you plan to return to Stratford

The ticket office was closed on arrival, so you were expected to scan and pay by your mobile; if you had not already made a booking. The other people who arrived with us by the Hop on, hop off City Sightseeing bus were unable to visit the cottage as they did not have smart phones. There were two (2) members of staff at the entrance, who did not appear to be concerned that they were losing customers due to their intransigence. Ironically, when we were leaving the cottage, it looked like there was someone at the the ticket office. Why would any place make it difficult for people to visit. It was disgraceful way to treat people. Not everyone has either a smart phone, or wants one. It was such a shame, as the other members of staff were very good. The lad that met us at the entrance was knowledgeable and friendly and lady in the bedrooms was very lovely;. It was so nice to have a chat with her. Such a shame.

We visited Anne Hathaway's cottage on a cold day (Ist March) so it was quite quiet. It is beautifully kept and managed and is really great to visit - and almost feel a part of history. The staff were friendly and knowledgable and we found it really interesting. Outside the garden (will be amazing to visit in the summer) even on a cold winter's day was lovely to walk around and also the orchard with the sculptures. The map of the UK one is fab. Really worth a visit . We had one of the tickets that means you can visit all the Shakespeares places and can be used again up to a year. This was a return visit so were using our tickets purchased in August.

We visited here early in the afternoon on a cold, wet and windy day. It was quiet, although it got a little more busy while we were there.

The staff couldn’t do enough for us. The knowledge of the guides was first rate. We learned so much about the property and the Hathaway family in a low key way. And, to actually walk on a floor which Anne Hathaway and William Shakespeare had walked on made us feel goosebumpy.

A great experience.

We visited here on a combined ticket for his birthplace etc. it is straightforward to find just outside Stratford, not far from the P& Ride. plenty of parking nearby. Again sadly we couldn't linger in the gardens owing to wet weather, but helpful guides made Shakespeare's story come alive, a lovely house, stairs can be steep but worth the climb. The gardens are well maintained, and typical cottage gardens of the era. There was a snack kiosk in the garden with a limited menu. For some reason the tickets seem to require you to print off each ticket separately,(save the planet) rather than using a single code as is the case at most venues.

... no pun intended! Ann Hathaway's Cottage is the most beautiful, quintessentially English, little country cottage, surrounded by the most colourful and fragrant flower filled gardens. You could quite easily spend a few hours with a family here, or just come alone and sit with a good book or contemplate your thoughts.
There are arts and crafts activities for children in the holidays and summer months, as well as a woodland walk, a willow tunnel, orchards and a sculpture trail.
If you are a keen photographer, Ann Hathaway's Cottage on a blue-sky day has got to be one of the best photo opportunities in the country.
Dont miss out on this gem! And even better, your ticket is valid as many times as you want to visit within a year!

I recently stayed for a few days in Stratford as part of a coach trip and a visit to this cottage was one of the main reasons for my stay.

The cottage did not disappoint - my only complaint would be that we were ushered through the rooms quite quickly especially upstairs. We were told that a maximum of six people were allowed upstairs at any one time due to the age and possible fragility of the floor boards, but the people behind kept crowding up the stairs.

Outside are spacious gardens, and luckily toilet facilities.

Unfortunately, the shop did not take cash so unable to buy anything - always surprised in these times that shops turn away custom in the form of real legal tender as actual money.

Returned here after 5 years and what a change. Today was a disappointment because the gardens are so overgrown now, orchard trees in a sorry state with just a general feeling of neglect and being unloved.
There used to be a wonderful cafe outside the garden but now refreshments are served from a tiny wooden shack with very little choices.
Unfortunately we arrived on a Saturday morning (23/07) when there were two coaches of young students/ tourists visiting the cottage. So after queuing for a while it felt very rushed once inside, because we didn’t really have an opportunity to hear the volunteers because the rooms are small and on a one way system and if you stopped to look and listen a bottle neck formed behind you,
In my opinion it would be better if entry was gained by a time slot to prevent over crowding and to allow one to enjoy this wonderful little cottage in its full glory.

We were on a coach trip with a short stop here. Many found it too expensive to go inside. The outside is very pretty, with a large cafe across the road, but I do not wish to drink coffee at every place of interest.

There were 5 members of staff 'greeting' us at the entrance to the cottage, but none of them knew how to sell us a family ticket. It took longer to buy a ticket than we spent at the cottage We were passed between 3 people and eventually I had to give my email, name and pay £33 - all of which had to be checked by another member of staff before we were allowed in.
The grounds consist of a boggy orchard, a closed and padlocked sculpture park and a refreshment kiosk which closed as we arrived at 2:15, freeing up 2 more members of staff to stand around chatting.
You can't just go into the cottage, you have to be shown around. A guide was giving her talk outside as we arrived, and after 10 minutes went in taking half a dozen people with her. Unfortunately that left an entire coach party of French school children ahead of us in the queue. We calculated that we'd be queuing for at least an hour, so at that point we gave up.
So, £33.83 to get in, plus £2 to park, to walk in a small orchard.

Thank you for your feedback about your recent visit to Anne Hathaway's Cottage. We are sorry that you had a frustrating visit. On the day that you visited, we were experiencing a technical problem with our card readers which caused some disruption to the usually smooth entrance processing. Although it appeared as if we were overstaffed, the technical issue was the main hold-up affecting the work our colleagues were able to do. The grounds at the Cottage have been very wet and boggy since we reopened in February due to the weather conditions. The road in front of the building sometimes becomes impassable due to flooding and there have been a handful of days where we have been unable to open the sculpture garden or the orchard for safety reasons. It is assessed daily but we are at the mercy of the weather. Our team does an introductory talk outside the Cottage to control the flow to the house. They do not accompany the group around the house as there are guides in the individual rooms. Despite the appearance visitors would not have to wait an hour to enter the Cottage due to the way we structure the route and procedure versus the capacity at any given time. Your entrance ticket is an annual one so you can choose to come back and visit up until the end of October and we hope to welcome you back.
