We had no idea just how stunning this castle would be or how important it was in its heyday. You could easily spend a whole day exploring the site. There are several free guided tours provided by volunteers. Maybe these are only available at the weekends. We toured the gatehouse with a great guy called Neil whose delivery was informative and humorous. Free audio guides are also provided with the entrance fee. There are plenty of information boards all around the grounds. We’d highly recommend this as one of the best castles we’ve ever visited and that’s saying something from a Welsh couple!

This is an English Heritage property full of history. If you book online, and are not a member, you receive a 10% discount, but parking is across from the castle but is not free for non-members. You arrive walking past the gift shop, where you can buy tickets on the day (parking is paid for at the car park). Here you can pick up audio guides (for free) which you really need to help you get the most of your visit. There are information boards, but the guides give you even more information, and if you are a fan of the Tudors, especially Dudley and Elizabeth I this castle, mainly developed to impress his queen, is testament to a very grand gesture. The castle is in ruins, apart from the gate-house, which has some artefacts. The garden is not huge compared to many National Trust homes with parks, but is still beautifully laid out. Visit the Tudor stables (bigger than most houses) to see the exhibition which helps with the history of the castle or to sit down inside for refreshments. There is also outdoor seating available. Toilets are in a little building near the gatehouse (accessible toilets are in the gatehouse) but not in the stables. It is easy to spend a couple of hours here, but you may struggle if you have mobility issues. Unlike some castles the steps make access fairly easy, although you may need to dodge the odd pigeon leaving a present!

Beautiful ruins with an interesting backstory and stunning recreated Elizabethan gardens. We skipped the audio tour but enjoyed the museum in the coach house which explored the relationship between Dudley and Queen Elizabeth I. We really liked the capacity to roam the grounds freely and at our leisure sans timed visit.

We visited yesterday and enjoyed the halloween activities put on over the half term break. We were so, so impressed by the quality of the entertainment, especially considering our visit was included in the normal membership price. My two children, aged 9 and 5, completed the monster hunting academy, which involved meeting and interacting with 8 different characters (a dragon hunter, werewolf hunter, vampire hunter, witchfinder, phantomologist, etc) and gaining a stamp on their card from each. All the characters were amazing! They had fantastic costumes and really played their parts well. The castle itself is beautiful and the perfect place to visit in the Autumn. The children enjoyed playing in the fallen leaves too! As well as the monster academy, there was also a halloween quest booklet for the children to complete. Plenty to keep the occupied and we just wished we had more time to spend there! We were there for 3 hours and could easily have spent more time exploring. Well worth a visit!

We're English heritage members so got free entry. This is mainly a ruin but worth the many steps to see the magnificent view . Only one tower is enclosed and accessible with exhibitions. It's worth getting the guidebook to read a fuller explanation of the buildings . Tearoom offered pasties and sandwiches and was very cold

My boyfriend and I visited Kenilworth whilst away on holiday and since we are members we thought it would be worth a visit. The castle ruins are bigger than expected and steeped in history. The information boards all around kept us captivated and had it not have been for them our visit would have been much quicker. It is great that you can go up to the top of the castle. The spiral staircases could do with a handrail as I found this a little daunting only having the middle part of the stairs to hold onto. I only gave four stars as the toilets are disgusting nothing like the standards you expect from EH and it is a shame that pigeons have been allowed to nest within the walls and take over the castle leaving bird poop everywhere, the smell in certain areas is off putting. The cafe was nice but they had run out of plain scones around midday when we visited which was a shame but the staff are very friendly and it is a good castle that is worth a visit especially if you’re already a member of EH.

The location is packed with history and plenty to see. Staff were really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and answered all the questions. Access to parts will be limited with plenty of steps. Good selection in the cafe but also lots of places to sit, take in the sights, and have a pick nick.

Lots of see and a great audio guide which was complementary. There are lots of lovely walks around the castle too. It was sad to see Dudley’s garden in such a bad state of repair though. It was only built 15 years ago but the paint is peeling and much of the wood has rotten.

What a beautiful building this is! And the grounds. Well maintained and atmospheric! I would just like to say that I went with my partner and his dog, and to my dismay, there are no dog poo bins around the estate. I noted that there was a lot of bags just left on the ground, and also some bits not picked up!!! It might be worth placing a few bins around the grounds to encourage people to pick up after their dogs. It spoils what is, otherwise, a pleasant experience.

We decided to visit Kenilworth castle, Friendly and helpful staff to greet us, Its a lovely place, even though its the ruins that are left you still try and picture how big it really was fully built and how far you could of seem from the top. Not many areas were off limits ( due to it being unsafe) which was good because i like to explore. They have built some stairs in one part so you can get to the top. Theres lots of information about the history of the castle, Theres a cafe and plenty of tables outside for a picnic. Would go again.

We’ve been to Kenilworth Castle dozens of times as it’s not too far from us and we’ve got English Heritage membership. But I was a bit worried that all the coronavirus restrictions might make it less fun. It was the first place we’d been to in 3 months because of lockdown. We booked in advance (the weekend before) and had timed tickets for 3pm. We arrived at about 2.50pm and parked in the car park. The main bit was full but the next aisle of parking on the grass was only partially full. Previously when we’ve bought our parking ticket we got a refund from the castle but it’s now changed so you only get free parking if you’ve got your English Heritage car sticker. We have no idea where ours is as we’ve never had to use it during the 10 years we’ve been members.

You show your prebooked entrance tickets (and membership cards) when you get to the actual castle, rather than in the gift shop which you used to do. There are one way systems in place which are well sign posted. There’s a lot of grassy space for the children to run around on and because it’s so spacious we didn’t really have any problems with social distancing. Our boys loved rolling down the grassy hills and running down the hills, probably more so because we haven’t seen a hill or even a slight incline for 3 months. The grass looks greener than usual, I imagine because no-one has been trampling on it for months like would usually happen.

You couldn’t really go up most of the steps up into the ruins but one set of steps was open which we went up. Otherwise we just spent our time watching the children run around having fun. The Elizabethan gardens were beautiful as usual.

The cafe was open and had a massive queuing space (although when we went we were the only ones in) and you can take whatever you’ve bought onto the picnic benches outside. There was hand sanitiser on the way into the cafe.

My husband took the children to the toilet so I don’t know exactly what the queuing situation was like there but no-one complained of being in a queue for ages so I’m presuming it was all ok.

The castle closes at 5pm and by the time it was 4pm it really wasn’t at all busy. So if you’re worried about social distancing I would recommend perhaps going late afternoon like we did. When we left at 5pm the boys were very upset to be leaving as they had had such a wonderful time. You exit out of a different gate than usual.

While the castle grounds and surrounding views were absolutely stunning and the castle ruins are fascinating less can be said about the onsite cafe.
My wife and I took our 3 children (14,10 & 7 respectively) out for a nice day out while the weather was nice unfortunately when we went to order the children's lunch boxes for the younger of the two children were were informed that because they were starting to run low that we couldn't have any because they were to be saved for "members only" and I'm sorry but what a load of rubbish.
After a bit of discussion and when the staff realised that our kids wouldn't eat anything else there due them being 10&7 they eventually let us buy just the sandwiches from them, but they only came in halves and each half a sandwich cost £2.20 so it was £4.80 for one sandwich to split between 2 children without any other parts of what is usually part of the kids lunchbox.
This is not a good selling point for your cafe at all, the fact that you will hold children's food back for "members only" and not for anyone else is kind of disgusting in my opinion and I hope this can get rectified for the future and hopefully this won't affect other families.

A beautiful place. English Heritage have really thought out the visitor experience, building stairs into the ruins so you can experience an impression of what the rooms would have been like and the views from therein. Informative displays and guide book. We felt that the entry fee was real value for money. The only tip I would give is that if you visit in winter, wrap up warm as the wind really gets through the higher areas! We went with our baby. We took a sling so we could explore properly- although you can get round a bit on the paths, to see it properly I would recommend other young families to do the same.

Amazing grounds & ruins, English heritage staff are always fantastic at welcoming you and making sure you have all the information you need.

We have visited three times this year, once as the host of the finish for the twin castles race and twice as English heritage members with our two children age 7 & 12 including a Santa visit in December.

The grounds are beautiful! The ruins are too and so much fun to explore with the kids and the dog. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our visits.

The audience with Santa was great, our 7 year old was convinced it was the real Santa after inspecting his beard!

The only thing that really lets the castle down is the restaurant. The prices are absolutely extortionate! I was completely shocked at the price of things like the cans of pop for kids, the lack of alternatives and affordable options for families. Very very disappointing as members, we always bring our own food and drink now too this venue and would get a coffee somewhere more affordable that is better quality.

Kenilworth castle and gardens are owned and run by the English heritage and if you are a member, entry and parking is free. There are toilets on site and a cafe. You can wander around the grounds and explore the castle ruins. You can also explore the Leicester Gatehouse which has The Queen and her Courtier exhibition on. Well worth a look.
You can take a look around the Elizabethan Gardens and take a look at the bird Avery.
There is an on-site shop, you can choose an audio tour. Dogs are welcome but be kept in a lead. Plenty to explore.

Visited on 09/09 lovely sunny day and very hot. Found free parking right outside the castle walls and gates but no signs on how to get in. Finally a couple pointed us in the right direction which was down a steep hill with a narrow path and stinging nettles either side. Once inside the gates we were stung again by the price. £16.25 per adult. They wanted us to gift aid for an additional £4 we declined. They wanted to sell us a brochure for £5 which was also respectfully declined. We got into the castle grounds and after half hour we realised there wasn’t much to see apart from ruins. We hoped there would be things going on, shows to see a stately room or 2 to look around but other than the walls there was nothing original to see, no entertainment and the gardens while lovely were nothing special. The price should reflect what you get and sadly we feel like we were robbed.

I'm not often one for leaving a review but I had to for my visit today. Kenilworth Castle was brilliant. We are a family of 4, two girls aged 8and 5, my wife and me and we all loved it. When we arrived the girls were given quests to complete and made to feel special as they were handed maps and guides.

The cafe was our first stop after a long drive and the food was pretty good, not cheap but not outrageous. Then onto the Gatehouse with the exhibitions, it was all really interesting and my wife now has bought books to find out more as it caught her interest. The kids loved the dress up and games.

Then the gardens were really lovely, including a huge aviary. But the best bit was walking round the ruins and bumping into one of the volunteers called Keith. He pretty much gave us a guided tour, including pretending to be a ghost when we were in the storehouse.

In fact the attraction would be really good without the staff and volunteers but it was amazing with them. They were all lovely and made everyone feel special.

I was not sure what to expect from the (largely ruins) of Kenilworth Castle. I was beyond pleasantly surprised and would highly recommend a visit.

The audio guide is well worth doing and easy to use, and provides a very helpful narrative when walking round to know what to look for.

The Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley exhibition was very good, lots of information to read and exhibits to look at.

The formal gardens and aviary are beautifully landscaped and provide a nice visual backdrop to the ruins of the towers.

You can walk round much of the two towers, Norman and Leicester, and get views from on high where Elizabeth I’s rooms were when she visited in the 1570s.

The grounds are lovely and easy to explore, well worth a walk around.

The stables cafe is reasonably priced and has a lovely selection of snacks and cakes, with loads of picnic seating outside and inside.

I would highly recommend a trip!

Well preserved and interesting site lovely gardens, guided tours available giving great insight to the history of this 900+ year old castle, tea room on site, could be more tables to support guest numbers but good snacks and drink selection reasonable price, if can and not a member of English heritage book tickets ahead online very easy to do and well organised when you arrive of these pre booked tickets- site says get 10% off but not applied as a non member I booked five adult tickets for admission @ £16:30each (£81:50 total) so what’s the 10% discount???
As not a member there is car park charge of £4 for four hours. We spent couple hours and still didn’t get to see it all it is a lovely destination.
