The High Level Bridge is yet another famous bridge over the River Tyne.
Built by the Hawks family, the bridge connects Newcastle and Gateshead and is 407 metre in length,it was constructed between 1847 - 1849 and opened by Queen Victoria.
My twin brother Stephen and I used to finish our nights in Newcastle in The Quayside Pub sitting outside in their beer garden enjoying beers till closing time and this bridge was directly overhead, looked amazing illuminated, my twin brother Stephen and I also walked across the bridge later on during our weeks holiday in Newcastle, the views are spectacular, its a bridge I highly recommend you visit if you're planning a trip to Newcastle.

The High Level Bridge is today not the most famous bridge in Newcastle, that role having been taken by the iconic Tyne Bridge, but it is arguably the most significant as a important technological feat for its time. Built between 1847 and 1849, it was a huge leap in bridge building, in part because of its height and length and in part because it was one of the very first double-decker bridges, with a railway bridge on top and a road bridge below. It still carries both kinds of traffic. It also has pedestrian walkways on either side on the lower level, separated by a barrier from the road traffic.
The bridge provides great views of the river and the other bridges.
The bridge is also notable as the location of the memorable scene in the classic and iconic 1971 film Get Carter when Jack Carter (Michael Caine) confronts Margaret.
Another good point is that the road traffic is restricted so that it is much more quiet and pleasant to walk across than the Tyne Bridge, which usually has lots of traffic roarign across. It also provides good views of the Tyne Bridge.

This bridge is, as the name says, high. You get a perfect view of the other bridges and the quayside from here. The bridge itself is an impressive structure. It’s great to look up and around the bridge itself as you stroll across it. Finding the entrance was tricky as I’ve never been before but we decided to walk across the swing bridge to the other side (quayside) of the river, where we found the entrance to bridge on that side up a set of staircases which led to the castle, which was also lit up (as it was nighttime). The castle was a bonus so I highly recommend visiting at night to take in the views with the colourful lighting.

This magnificent structure which spans the river Tyne is just one of many bridges for you to marvel at, built by architect Robert Stephenson started to construct in 1847 opened in 1849 this road and railway bridge is well worth a visited either going over it on public transport on a train or as I did walking through one of the walkways, be careful of the nesting birds that’s all I will say hehe.
This bridge again give views of the city which will not disappoint you as I did see my array of snaps below.
So in summary the High Level Bridge, was on my High Level to go and visit.

One of the seven bridges over the Tyne this caters for vehicles and pedestrians on the lower level and trains on the upper level. Lovely views of the other bridges. Wide pavements and barriers so you can lean against them to pass others if you suffer from a fear of heights as I do. By the 5th crossing I was managing fine

This is just 1 of many bridges over the River Tyne, along Newcastle Quayside. All very different in design and build, this is not particularly impressive or interesting.
We walked past (under) all of the bridges as we hiked coast to coast over the summer. The views along the river with the many bridges are very photogenic. Just avoid the bird poop when passing under the bridges!

This was the final of 4 bridges that we crossed within an hour. Sadly, with all of the roadworks we found it incredibly difficult to ascend and had to ask some locals for help. You have to be reasonably fit to climb this bridge, but the views of the other bridges are stunning once you walk across it.

I've always wanted to explore this bridge. Although there was renovation work going on, it surpassed my expectations. Stunning architecture and great photo opportunities. It's lit up at night and well worth a walk to see from the Quayside.
Shame about the Graffiti though.

This is a pretty cool piece of engineering. I understand why its called the high level bridge because looking up at it from the quayside is quite daunting but it's impressive. I wouldn't say its my favourite of Newcastle's bridges as it seems a bit grubby and neglected and needs little TLC but still its a great structure.

We visited here to see the Stephenson iconic bridge and it is impressive however it has lots of graffiti which needs to be removed. It is a treasure of the city so it should be looked after properly. Newcastle is a lovely place but this needs to be sorted out.
