    Beautiful venue!!
I have lived in Newcastle all my life but have never been here before, well i did have tickets for We will rock you back in 2020, but we all know how that year went social wise for everyone. The building is a great building and when entering for the first time i noticed it was just as great on the inside. I had gallery seats so was quite high up but could still see the stage really well. I had come to see 2:22 a ghost story and the show was amazing from start to finish, such a great cast, and the sound quality is equally as good no matter where your sitting, on the subject of stitting the seats arent very comfortable, my back was killing by the end, but theatre seats rarely are so thats no fault of the venue really, but i think i would struggle to watch a really long show there, but thats just me personally, others might not have the same experience. The food and drink is more expensive than average but your not paying london theatre prices, so not too bad. The staff our pleasant and welcoming and the ticket prices for this show wearnt too bad. Im really glad that places like this survived the pandemic and still produce amazing shows such as this one. I will defo be back to see more shows in the future. Keep up the good work!.

    Lovely theatre
Brilliant show and decent seats. Out of order toilets and expensive drinks. Ticket and bag checker not very welcoming. Need to ensure staff focus on first impressions a little more.

    A welcoming environment
A relatively comfortable seat with a decent amount of leg room. Would recommend an aisle seat if you're larger, tall or have difficulties walking as saw a few people struggling with getting through to the middle of aisles. The price of snacks isn't as bad as some other theatres. Can't comment on alcohol prices as didn't get any. The staff are nice and welcoming, and of course, it's so lovely to be in such a beautiful venue.

Something about pantos that get you in the Christmas mood. An iconic building and a great cast/show for a laugh a minute performance for adults and children alike. Awesome. We went as ages 5 to 56, all loved it.

    Up there with London’s Best
I’ve visited and worked at many heritage theatres around the country and this is up there with the best. Friendly staff, Georgian opulence and style yet able to stage contemporary shows. We take these places for granted. Don’t. Remember how you felt during lockdown and treasure them!

    Fantastic Ballet
My wife and l attended Scottish Ballet’s Cinderella. A great night out. Only quibble was the price of drinks but no worse than similar venues. Like the fact that you get free travel on the Metro with your theatre ticket

Mathew Bourne’s Edward Scissor Hands just exquisite
MathewBourne’s Edward Scissor Hands was just breathtakingly awesome! it was like being transported into dream that I didn’t want to end. The costumes and scenery were so Tim Burton, and the lead dancer was exquisite in the role . It’s a must see !

    Theatre royal review
I love to bring my children to the theatre. In this last year we have been to see Dirty Dancing, Pinocchio, Peter Pan goes wrong, Edward Scissorhands and yesterday we came to see wizard of oz. We came to see Dirty Dancing our bags were checked and drinks and snacks were removed from us this including two bottles of Coca Cola and a pack of wine gums. When we entered the venue for sale was bottles of Coca Cola and wine gums. So we had to rebuy our two bottle of drink and pack of wine gums for triple the price we had just spent at the nearby Tesco express. Since then we haven’t taken our own drinks and snacks and purchased at the venue however every time since we have seen lots of people going in with a bottles of drinks in their hands or pockets, at the Christmas panto we saw children going in with selection boxes in their hands to snack on the rough the show and wonder why it’s different rules for different people. I’m a little reluctant to bring snacks again just in case we get them confiscated again and have to rebuy when we get in. Snacks and drinks are so very expensive within the theater, The shows that we have been have been excellent, I always try to book as soon as possible to ensure better seats but sometimes have been unsuccessful. At the panto Pinocchio. There was a lady sat in front of us, she was extremely tall and also had a high bun on top of her head. We couldn’t see a thing. I can’t understand why a person would do that when they are aware people will be sat behind them. There were also children jumping up and down excited constantly and stood up in front of their chairs which was restricting our view to the left and right of the woman with her high bun. I wish people would be a bit more considerate and ask their children to remain seated whilst everyone else is seated. A lady behind us had a child screaming throughout the first half of Pinocchio and I wondered why she didn’t remove the child and calm him before coming back in. I’m unsure why the staff also didn’t suggest this. However on all other productions we haven’t seemed to have this issue. Leg room is slightly restricted but this is normal for theatres especially the really old ones.

Still waiting for a refund for the opera we should have attended last night! There is nowhere to contact apart from the main email in box, which we have, and still nothing. We have 2 more shows booked, so at present we are over £300 out of pocket and have no way of getting our money back. We have been to many shows in the past and were even memebers, but will be very wary of booking anything else.

The whole venue stinks of greed and if your short of cash you can sod off! Me and the wife have been going there to pantos for 40 years, taking our kids and grandchildren. We were in town new years eve and called in, where we were told the cheapest seats were £25 up in the gods (where your virtually seating on the roof). We were told there's no concessions for oaps or paying at door when the show was starting, you used to get in for around half price, so we decided to give it miss. The people running the theatre and those staring in pantos would rather see it half empty than give the less fortunate a helping hand and give them a little reduction. Where's the season of good will gone to? There's an old saying, give a little get alot in return, and it's true, remember that when your asking for grants and donations theatre royal Newcastle!!

Be very careful - partial view seats are not always marked as such.
I booked online and purposely avoided 'restricted view' seats. Don't go the theatre that often, so I'd rather pay and see the whole stage.
Sadly, the seats marked as full view were very much partial. Entire conversations were conducted where we could only see one of the actors.
When I emailed and suggested a partial refund, I was told no. On challenging that, I was told I could get a free ticket the next time I bought one at full price. Given that the theatre's more than two hours away, I'd be paying a couple of hundred in transport, accommodation and tickets, just to get one free ticket!
They said I should have found a staff member in the interval, but to be honest I thought it might get better - plus the theatre was clearly full to bursting, so I'm not sure where they'd have moved me to.
Not offering at least a partial refund when what you have sold is clearly not as described on the website is extremely poor.
My advice to others is, in the stalls, avoid seats on the outer edges. Even when not marked as partial view, they probably are, and "the team" as they endearingly called themselves in emails, won't be the slightest bit interested in your complaint.

This was my first visit to the theatre with my family. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. However, when I booked my tickets they were not described as restricted view on their website or when I spoke to the customer service (and I did ask the question) when I called due to the covid cancellation. If I had been told I would never have booked them.
I was extremely upset when we arrived at our seats to find all 4 had some sort of restriction some much worse than others. My two young daughters were very upset after looking forward to this show for nearly two of years, it was a massive let down for us all on our first visit. During the show some of it could not be seen at all, at one point they were singing one of the songs sat on what I think was a coffin (I could only see a corner) and we could not see any of the actors at all.
This show was quite expensive and sold as unrestricted, it was also 100 mile round trip for us to make only to have a poor experience at your theatre.
I emailed the box office twice 1st time i got no reply and 2nd time the only reply i got back from their customer experience department was sorry for your crap tickets but tough luck we will do nothing about this and they didn't. This was my families 1st and last visit to this theatre. I advise everyone to be careful when booking as they dont care about customer satisfaction.

My last visit to the venerable Theatre Royal was 40 years ago so it was interesting to see how the building had fared over the decades.

One can only praise the work that has been done to re-create the Edwardian interior and retain the atmosphere and acoustics of a great venue.

As for the performance itself, a great show was enthusiastically performed, sets relatively simple but quite in keeping with the Greek island theme. Really nice way to spend an afternoon.

A mention too to for the front of house staff who were very helpful.

Great to see a full house as well.

Two points of advice I would offer are a) leg room in the grand circle is quite tight - not impossible but perhaps tricky for the less able or those over 6’ and b) there are some quirks with online booking when trying to select two seats out of a bloc of three available necessitating using telephone booking instead. Fortunately the telephone team are aware of the issue and the booking was sorted pdq. This could do with fixing though.

Looking at the schedule there is a fantastic choice so we will definitely be visiting again.

Performance was good, staff were great, drinks weren’t as extortionate as other similar venues I’ve been to.
My main gripe was when we booked online the options were limited to mainly the more expensive seats as the cheaper ones on the upper circle appeared to be all booked already. However on attending the theatre it appears either hundreds of people didn’t bother to turn up for the seats they’d paid for or the ticket booking system is designed to force you towards the more expensive seats…
Check out the picture 1 minute before the performance started.

Brillant show from Derren Brown, so no reflection on him that our overall experience was terrible! We went to Derren Brown: Showman at Newcastle Theatre Royal last week [a great show, higfhly recommended]. We were shocked that at the people are expected to allow their bags to be searched for alcohol, even very smal bags, such as my tiny bag, 25cmx15cm. This does not happen at Sage Gateshead, Tyneside Cinema or the Everyman. It is degrading and demeaning. We thought it was a bomb search, which is fair enough, but the young woman searching us said she was 'looking for cans' [exact words]. When we suggested it would be impossible to smuggle cans in such a small bag, the young woman's collegue, working at the other door, leaned over to suggest we could be smuggling 'small bottles of gin' [agian, exact words]. We are an ordinary couple, ages 69 and 71yrs. We do not smuggle alcohol and we find searches like this and the attitude of the staff very upsetting. In future we'll avoid Theatre Royal and continue to patronize nicer places, where you are treated with the respect human beings deserve.

I recently went here to watch Six. We had a fantastic time. The theatre is absolutely beautiful and the staff were all very helpful. Most of them went above and beyond. It would have been five star but for my weird experience at the bar. I asked for two bottles of Diet Coke and was told they only had it on draught. I declined as I don’t like balancing a cup of drink in tight theatre seats as I’m scared it gets knocked over so told the server I wouldn’t bother as I didn’t want a cup. I opted for a sparkling water. She said it was a good choice then said as the bottle was glass she’d pop it a cup for me and poured it into a cup with ice (I hate ice) before I’d stopped her. After the conversation we’d just had I was baffled and annoyed. Only a minor complaint but so odd. Overall we loved the show and loved the theatre. The staff were polite and extremely helpful (apart from weird bar thing).

On attending the show last night, I was disgusted to find that there was foul language throughout the show.
As a family … yes, it may be hard to believe, but we don’t use foul language, surely we can’t be the only ones.
If we had brought our children to see this show it would have been most embarrassing and shocking.
Why was this not advertised.
The music was good, we have all their albums and I’ve read the life story with no bad language, I may add.
There is more choice of wording and vocabulary that this need not of happened.
We have been to the theatre hundreds of times without offence and we thought this was more of a choice than cinemas.
This tends to be the norm now and people out there may think we are prude’s ….we are Not.
As I said we thoroughly enjoyed the music but not the input of the story line.
Maybe next time I should take a great look at the advertising and censorship.
Most disappointed.

Wow! This show was fantastic from the minute it started I couldn’t stop smiling its a real feel good show. The music and singers were fabulous. I haven’t seen the movie but understood the story line perfectly what a laugh. I would recommend this show for adults only as there is a lot of innuendo and a bit of swearing, but don’t let that put you off I would definitely see this one again.
