Visited to see the negatives that had recently been discovered of life in the north east - this was my fist visit and have been back several times since. We regularly call in as all of the exhibitions are great, nicely displayed and the staff are very friendly and happy to answer questions.

Have been here loads of times over the years and every time there is something memorable and though provoking to see. I'm aware it's currently closed for a well deserved renovation but was inspired to write the review by the current (Aug 2015) exhibition at the Laing of a selection from the Amber archives, which reminded me of a lot... An honest and truthful representation of life in the North East and on Earth !I have been visiting the Gallery since it opened in 1977. A Gallery well worth while exploring for the power of its photojounalism and now a major exhibition at the Laing Gallery in Newcastle starting in July

Really easy to walk past this as its tucked down a side alley (hence the name), but look out for the sign on the wall as you leave the Quayside heading up the hill to Monument. Small, local gallery with photographs, exhibitions change reasonably often and a mix of local stuff and foreign themes.

I always like to visit here when they have a new exhibit and as usual was not disappointed. The photographs were gritty and really made you think and you can almost imagine being there. My favourite pictures included Berlin and Belfast. The gallery is free and has a nice atmosphere to it although it is not very big.

I pop in here every time there's a new exhibition on and am never disappointed. Over two floors (be careful of the steep wooden steps if you're a little tottery on your feet!) it's laid out very nicely with an accompanying piece of literature that explains the exhibit and artist's intentions.

Just been to the superb exhibition of 1890's photos of Newcastle but this is a unique space to see lots of wonderful exhibitions. The gallery is small and has very friendly staff. It is 'hidden' down a small alleyway which evokes images of times gone by. It really is a unique place to visit before moving onto the Red House... More

Herzlichen Gruss aus Marburg (D), nachdem ich über die Jahre mehrfach in der Side Gallery gewesen bin, hoffe ich auf weitere "Good News", weil ich auch beim nächsten Besuch in Newcastle die Side sehen will! - Because of my interest in documentary photography for decades now, I was very glad, to be able to present some of The Side Gallery... Where real life / still lives / human(e) lives still exist. A welcome oasis in the middle of a city brimming with mediocrity.
