Beautiful church in The Haymarket
Oct 2021 • Friends
My twin brother Stephen and I were pub hopping around the Haymarket area and its impossible not to see this very beautiful church.
The Church Of St Thomas The Martyr is a church dedicated to Thomas Becket ,Archbishop Of Canterbury who was murdered in 1170 by four knights who mistook King Henry VIII rantings about Thomas Becket as an order to kill the Archbishop, subsequently as Thomas Becket was perceived to be a defender of the church he was regarded as a martyr and canonised in 1173 ,one of his murderers Hugh De Morville elected to found a chapel in his honour as a private penance ,a chapel that would eventually become Church Of St Thomas The Martyr .
The church we see today was constructed between 1827 - 1830 from designs from architect John Dodson in the Gothic Revival style of architecture that is so pleasing on the eye ,we viewed the church at night ,looked beautiful bathed in moonlight, it stands majestically towering over the Haymarket district ,I obviously couldn't enter the church but on my next trip to Newcastle I will rectify this ,its a church I highly recommend you visit if you're in the area and easy to locate along Haymarket Lane.

I never used to like this church at all but I do now. Try and see the bell in the bell tower it’s very well hidden. Can’t be 4 stars because the indoors is absolutely horrible. It’s a shame because I love this church.

This is a gothic style church. It looks really odd outside but inside it’s quite disappointing and different.

Sits over the Haymarket

Not a great church, but it’s there, overseeing the Haymarket. Checking that the council in the Civic Centre is being good. Source of cards for Christmas. Not a parish, just part of the architecture of Newcastle.

It is a very ordinary church. It’s is really basic but I do like seeing the bell being rung. Not good.

I have been to many churches in my life and this one is really average. If you find this church you must find the bell.

You can see the bell in the bell at the top of this church. I love it inside this church. Well worth a visit.

The Tardis reversed!

Huge and imposing from the outside, I was drawn to explore the interior. It didn’t seem quite the same inside.... certainly not as flamboyant, but seemed much smaller, quiet, clean, lovely windows, and a lot of the space given over to the sales of Christmas cards and other arts and crafts. A peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle outside.

Church

On our way to visit the museum we visited this lovely little church. It’s on the right side of the road as you look towards the museum from the Metro. They have a super Fairtrade shop there selling a variety of goods, edible or wearable or ornamental! They have beautiful stained glass windows and display boards explaining the name of the church. Well worth a visit!
