Unexpectedly shut
Aug 2020 • Family
I was looking forward to seeing an exhibition celebrating works of arts the Friends of Guildford House have purchased for the local council over many years. This Monday, however, the management was distinctly friendly shutting all parts of this fascinating building other than the tourist information right at the front. We were told it opens from Wednesday to Saturday. This was despite information online clearly stating that the museum and cafe are open all week during the summer.

This is worth a visit

Guildford house is one of the oldest buildings in the high street. Originally built of timber.
It houses the Tourist board on the ground floor, go a little deeper and the structure of the building looks as it might have been 400 years ago.

Feb 2019 • Solo
This 17th Century Grade1 building is at top of the cobbled High St opposite Sainsbury’s, and it houses the Guildford tourist office,Art Gallery, Gift shop and tea rooms.

The first occupants were John Childe a London solicitor, and wife Olive, who bought the place & built it for £100, in 1660,
and is one of the oldest original buildings on the high st.

Birthday Morning Tea
Mar 2019 • Friends
Meet up with my sister we had a great cream tea for two with warm scones and clotted cream. My sister had a large toasted tea cake. The tea was very flavourful piping hot, not weak. We sat in the marquee outside in the courtyard the young lady serving us put on the heaters so were really comfortable and nothing was too much for them. Really great start to our visit to Guilford. A true hidden gem to be recommended.

Lovely
Nov 2018 • Friends
Lovely medium sized gallery that has interesting small exhibitions and pictures of local or historical significance. Can spend anything from 10 minutes to an hour depending on how long you wish to study each artwork and how much time you have available. Admission is free.

Interesting and Packed With Goodies.

We visited the Tourist Bureau and had a look around the shop. The staff is to be commended for their assistance to us, first time visitors to the area. We received a few brochures and lots of helpful advice. The shop itself is beautiful from the outside and has so much inside you could spend some time looking around. We didn't tget to visit the cafe but did have a quick look at some beautiful art displayed in the gallery.

Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2018
Dec 2018 • Solo
It’s not just a historic building, Guildford’s Tourist Information centre and a downstairs cafe, but also an art gallery. This month across its first floor it is displaying eighty or so paintings each by a finalist in the Sunday Times Watercolour competition, attracting amateur and professional painters alike. I was pleased to see works by some favourites of mine, David Brayne RWS known for his ethereal boating landscapes and Roy Willingham a maker of prints of Italian scenes with the character of postcards. Impressive too was ‘The Prodigal Son’ by Sharon Charalambous, a first prize winner. Not sure about the large vacant perspex cabinet in the middle of one of the rooms. Perhaps a missing or stolen Turner Prize winner from a different gallery.

A shop that you could past by a million times and never know it was there!
Sep 2018 • Family
When people say hidden gem, this really is a hidden gem. Its not obvious its even there and I found it because i saw some of the lovely items they curate in their windows (which most people probably don't even give a second glance because of the building its in!).

However, when you're next passing this amazing building find the time to explore its rooms, cafe and the amazing gift shop with some absolutely gorgeous items (some hand made and not widely available as long as other gifts etc.,) and friendly welcoming service too. I mean what more do you need?

This little shop on the high street has lots of memorabilia to purchase as souvenirs and maps of the town. Helpful staff and small exhibitions.
