Interesting historical survival

Visited the Undercroft in Guildford yesterday when I chanced upon it when walking up the High Street.

It is an amazing and historical little space with an ecclesiastical feel to the vaulted ceiling and carved corbels.

The two ladies who volunteer there were very helpful and were a mine of information.

Well worth a visit if you have 10 to 15 minutes to spare when next shopping in town.

First time visit

Though this was a free attraction in the middle of Guildford High Street it was rather disappointing. Not much to see and smelled rather musty. Appeared to be staffed by volunteers, friendly and helpful. Wouldn't recommend this place.

On Guildford high street
Jul 2018 • Couples
The signs for it are on the high street but this 11th century wine shop is actually under the high street. Some period architecture and lots of information points describing all the displays inside this amazing cellar. Open wednesdays 2pm-4pm and Saturday afternoons.

FANTASTIC !!

This is a secret find in Guildford. It is only open summer Saturdays and Wednesday afternoons and is barely known by the residents of the town.

Hidden in the middle of North Street, this is a genuine undercroft - a medieval shop selling top quality goods to the King in the Castle and the rich burghers of the town. It is set out as a wine merchants - Henry III needed 5,000 gallons of wine a year at the Castle ! The architecture is absolutely stunning, rivalling that of churches and cathedrals of the period. Clearly no architects or engineers were needed - this was the work of master craftsmen who knew their stuff - indeed they may have been involved at the same sort of time in building the Friary which is now lost under the Friary Shopping Centre.
The volunteer staff are full of enthusiasm and knowledge. And there is a great short guide written by the town's Remembrancer to provide masses of information.
English Heritage rate it as the best medieval undercroft in England. Well worth a look to see the skill of our forebears.

Small but Interesting
Jul 2017 • Couples
My wife and I stumbled across this little gem as we were shopping in Guildford High Street. The Undercroft is the cellar of a medieval wine merchant's shop, found down a flight of old steps beneath a shop - not for those who have any difficulty walking!

Inside the original walls and arched ceiling are painted white, making the room feel light and more spacious than it actually is. There was a volunteer there, who told us about what the shop might have been used for and a little of its history, which was fascinating.

To aid our brief visit, there were a number of large wooden barrels on display, with information boards giving further insights into the wine merchant's trade and lifestyle.

All in all, a great little find... and all for free!

EASILY MISSED

The Undercroft is a medieval cellar that used to be used by a wine merchant. It is only open on Wed 2-4 and Sat 12 -4 May - Sept. There is not much to see but if you are walking up the High Street when it is open you can pop in. It is opposite Boots.

Guildford History Below The High Street
Sep 2016 • Solo
The Undercroft may be small, but as a snapshot of early Guildford history it makes for a fascinating visit. Used by various merchants and retailers over the years back as far as the thirteenth century. There are stairs down from the lower part of the High Street and signage at pavement level indicates openings. Free to visit, but access only twice a week in the summer months and it is strongly recommended that you check on the website for details before arrival. There are some very good information panels and the whole visit was greatly enhanced by the input from the enthusiastic volunteer staff.

Right in the middle of Guildford High street

A most unexpected historical place to find in the high street, thought to have been built in the 11th century as a wine shop. Well worth a visit, and is free entry!

Guildford Undercroft
Sep 2016 • Business
This is a grade 2 listed building dating from the 13C in the heart of the city and well worth a visit. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of such a feature in the whole of the country. On the recent 'heritage day' it was described as a medieval wine merchant's shop.

Interesting Find
Sep 2015 • Friends
Came across this by accident as it is not always opened (being run by volunteers) right in the high street this croft is very small but very atmospheric and one of the few left in Guildford. Not worth a special trip however, if you are there it is well worth a visit.
