Gardens with sports facilities
Aug 2019 • Solo
These are the grounds owned by the city Council of a building named after an eighteenth century Guildford Mayor, used as a boarding block for the grammar school but demolished in 1964. The only building on this site today named Allen is a small lodge used as an office building within the grounds which comprise a garden with not only plant beds but also a rockery with a couple of bizarre silver spheres. Beyond a separate lawn and a sports area free for the use of local residents. Today the only people in sight were some mainly topless young males on bikes.

Hidden Gem

Found this park by accident and glad I did. It was such a pleasant and peaceful way to stretch the legs after dinner. If you are in the area, do stop in but perhaps not something to go out of your way to see.

I never knew
Nov 2018 • Solo
Having lived in and around Guildford for most of my adult life, I never knew this park existed and yet it’s only a stones throw from town centre (just goes to show what you can find out from Tripadvisor!). It’s alongside York Rd multi-storey car park and between Chertsey St/Eastgate Gardens with a walk through between. Bottom end has a tarred area for ball games and then a bowling green/club (green looked rather forlorn when I visited early winter). More formal gardens are at the top end with views through trees towards cathedral - probably a nice spot to sit out in summer. There are two small brick towers alongside the path which would mean nothing unless you read the information panel on lower one (very difficult to read), which explains these were ventilation shafts/emergency exits from the deep underground shelters built during WW2 - not sure if the shelters still exist but original doors/openings on the pillars have long since been bricked up.

Nice, clean and quiet gardens

Located off Chertsey Street in Guildford are these well maintained gardens with lots of seating areas to chill out and relax from the crowds.

Peaceful park - a lovely tucked away green space
Aug 2017 • Friends
I've lived in Guildford for well over 30 years and yesterday was the first time I'd noticed these grounds whislt walking down Cherstsey Road.

Good quality tennis courts & basketball area is the first thing you sees. Beyond this is a large but disused bwling green with plenty of benches round the outside.

Behind what must have been the Bowling Pavilion (now the Emmaus Centre) is a small maze and walled gardens - apparently called the Music Garden.

The whole area is a hidden delight and a pleasant large area of peaceful gardens, Well worth a visit or just somewhere to sit for lunch.

Nice local facility
May 2017 • Family
These grounds are always well presented. They are full of lovely flowers and some interesting sculptures. It's very convenient to York Road carpark, and although not very big they are nice to walk around. Probably a good place to take young children on the way into town

a hidden away bit of peace

there are free tennis courts besides two small gardens. It is a short charming walk but sometimes is a resting place for the local drunks. They don't disturb and not always about so do stop and look during a busy shop.
