About
We are a small volunteer run Museum in the centre of Dorking. We tell the story of Dorking from the time that dinosaurs roamed around the A24 bypass (the bypass wasn't there then) We tell the story of Pilgrim Father, William Mullins, who travelled to Cape Cod only to die three months later... (luckily we also sent Priscilla Mullins who did much better) We have local celebrities including writers George Meredith (who lived on Box Hill) and E. M. Forster (from Abinger), suffragette Emmeline Pethick Lawrence and of course Ralph Vaughan Williams (composer of the greatest hit "Lark Ascending"). Come and see us... write a nice review... so that other people will come and see us.

Excellent local museum

Excellent little museum, with very professional displays and enthusiastic volunteer staff. Some genuinely interesting artefacts on show, covering every period from prehistoric to modern times.

GETTING TO KNOW DORKING
Sep 2021
As soon as I arrived, I was given the undivided attention of a gentleman there, who spent an hour showing me over the entire museum. Then, during a further half-hour, I examined some of the artefacts in closer detail. All this provided me with enough interesting information about Dorking to enhance my first visit here.

There was so much to see, even in a relatively small museum, from early history to the Pilgrim Fathers to the World Wars to modern racing cars, not forgetting those famous Dorking chickens, and my guide was so knowledgeable.

Altogether a wonderful experience!

Very informative museum
Aug 2021
Having recently moved to Dorking, we popped in to the museum to find out more about the area. We were really impressed - there is a lot of information about the different stages of Dorking's history, and we learnt a lot about the area. We also did the Heritage Trail (leaflets available in the museum or online) which I'd recommend. Great to see a town that is interested in its history!

A great small local museum with a very broad range of exhibits exploring the breadth of Dorking and surrounding area. Thoroughly recommended for all ages.

Deepdene Trail Guided Walking Tour
May 2019 • Couples
Found about this on a google search of things to do quite by chance. So glad we signed up! Peter Sturge and his wife Jen (as well as some other museum staff) we so accommodating and kind. They communicated several times prior to our visit. Although the area has more hills than this Florida girl is used to the staff took the time to let me catch up or walk at a more comfortable pace for me. They were so knowledgeable and committed to making it an enjoyable experience for all ages represented. We enjoyed a wonderful chat afterwards and would visit again if the opportunity arises. We did not get a chance to visit the museum as it was Sunday and closed but we strolled around the town and found it charming and absolutely interesting too. Thanks for such a welcoming visit!

Thank you so much for taking time to review your time on the Deepdene Trail. It was all the talk afterwards that someone from Florida had booked onto the walk. We are so glad you took the time to visit us - and hope you'll return to Dorking when the Museum is open.

Being Dorking born and breed I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Dorking museum. Great way to spend an hour on a rainy day, full of interesting pictures and memorabilia. I purchased a small book on old Dorking from the little shop which I will be giving as part of a birthday present to a family member. I tied this visit in with lunch out, all in all a great afternoon.

An excellent way to spend an afternoon! I thoroughly recommend this gentle stroll through 17th & 18th landscapes in the company of a knowledgeable and fluent guide. Well done Dorking Museum for organising this walk. 😀

Nice little bit of history in Dorking
Feb 2019
I took my 2 small grandsons there in February. we had a nice time, but found that there wasn’t a need for a great deal of time to see the museum. There is an entrance fee, unlike many of the other, larger, museums around such as Godalming.

We are glad that you had a nice time at the Museum with your grandsons. We are sorry that you felt that there was not as much to see and do as you expected, as many visitors are surprised at the wide range of exhibits that cover a very broad spectrum of the town’s heritage and often wish for more time to spend. However, as you will appreciate, there are restrictions on the space that we have available. I am afraid that we do have to charge an entrance fee as we receive no government or other funding to maintain what we believe to be a valuable resource, and hence rely primarily on entrance fees, shop sales and donations – and the goodwill of our team of volunteers who run the Museum.
