- DebMGreater London, United Kingdom46 contributionsLavenham is stunning and the Guildhall is a must.Beautiful medieval building in this pretty Suffolk village, one of the oldest villages in England. It is truly stunning and the Guildhall is a must. It is very interesting and was previously a workhouse and jail. There were some pitiful stories about people in the workhouse which gave a true feel for this place. Loads to see and very informative. There is a beautiful church in lavenham which we visited afterwards.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 20, 2024
- N DLincolnshire, United Kingdom1,496 contributionsInformativeIt won’t take particularly long to tour the guildhall but it’s well worth a visit. To be honest, the history of the workhouse and the prison is pretty disturbing. Thank goodness we live in more enlightened times.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 2, 2024
- Beverley WDunstable, United Kingdom23 contributionsA visit to Lavenham Guildhall is a must.We were met inside, by a very enthusiastic National Trust Volunteer called Tom. His enthusiasm was contagious. Is knowledge of the Guildhall was incredible, laced with humour. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and learnt so much. Thank you Tom.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 9, 2024
- Jane C22 contributionsExcellent room guideThe Guildhall was more interesting than I had expected. The room guide was excellent. We often find that NT room guides start regaling you with information whether you want it or not but this guide asked if we would like him to tell us about the property or would we rather explore on our own which we appreciated. We were keen to hear what he had to say and he was very interesting and spoke well.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 16, 2024
- Benfar6531London, United Kingdom107 contributionsHighly recommendedThe National Trust generally sets a high standard and the Guildhall is no exception. The building has a very long and varied history (ranging from a religious guild through workhouse, prison, cottages, chapel, shop to R&R facility for US aircrew) and the way the building is presented brings all this to life. As usual with NT, there’s a good cafe with friendly and helpful staff (surprisingly, there was only a small retail offer). We also did the £5 each walking tour of Lavenham (with Paula) which was excellent and highly informative. We were surprised to be the only two doing it. It starts in the Guildhall and covers most of the key buildings. We arrived at 10 am and didn’t depart until after 4 pm (and benefited from free parking in the Market Place (which we were told is about to change!).Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 22, 2024
- padrerayThetford, United Kingdom1,790 contributionsReally InformativeThis was a really informative visit and I learned a lot about the history of Lavenham and of the East Anglian weaving trade. The guildhall is maintained by the National Trust and the staff and volunteers were helpful (providing me with a video guide to the hall for the areas not wheelchair accessible) and knowledgeable. The exhibits give a great insight into the rise and fall of the fortunes of Lavenham and of the wool trade generally. The tearoom was also a great spot for a National Trust scone and cream and a time to unwind.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 16, 2024
- Fiona W3 contributionsBeautiful buildings - a jewel in Lavenham's crown with fascinating Medieval history. Our trip to The Guildhall today was excellent. The buildings are utterly beautiful and we were exceptionally lucky to arrive on a day that Tom was a guide: architectural and religious history, time-line, belief in witches, and other subjects relating mainly to the Tudor period in Lavenham, he brought completely to life - the sort of chap one could listen to and learn from all day long! Thank you, Tom! It was also lovely to sit in the garden with a coffee and some Blueberry Bakewell tart! We both thoroughly enjoyed our visit and learned a lot. The Guildhall is well worth a visit.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 5, 2024
- Lauren MMunich, Germany5 contributionsReally enjoyable and educational visitHad a really lovely visit to the Guildhall today. We were lucky enough to have a talk from guide Tom who was a wealth of information, and taught us so much about the building and history of the area whilst making it very entertaining. The cafe and garden were very nice.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 25, 2024
- ElaineAndGregChesterland, Ohio3,089 contributionsCombine with Little Hall Lavenham Next DoorThe Guildhall sits on the market square towards the center of Lavenham. It's an impressive timbered structure and is pleasing to view from the outside. The interior has served as many things during its long life, but is currently a museum about Lavenham and in that regard tells a good story about the ups and downs of being a prosperous wool town centuries ago. The Guildhall is run by the National Trust and the hours seemed geared to the many day-trippers to Lavenham, which is itself a charming town filled with similar buildings. Note that it tends to close around 4:00, so time yourself accordingly. The exhibits are interesting, including a time when the guildhall was used as a prison/workhouse and some material from WWII (as there were several air force bases nearby). While this is a very good attraction, we actually preferred the smaller building to its left, the Little Hall Lavenham, which has similar limited hours, but its own interesting history and lots of curious art objects. Both are easy to include on a trip to Lavenham, either for a day trip or, as we did, if you are staying in Lavenham for a few days.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 31, 2024

This Guildhall is very impressive from outside, and is clearly well maintained by National Trust.
Inside, there were very helpful guides who took the time to give us some history of the property.
Each room has information to read, and objects / artefacts to look at etc.
There's a tea room adjacent which was very popular.
We enjoyed our visit and will return in the future for another visit.

Absolutely worth a visit, an amazing building in a town that boasts more than 300 Grade I listed Tudor buildings. The visit was really enhanced by the guides briefing on the buildings uses over time and all those interesting little facts we all enjoy. There is an NT tea-room attached if needed.

A must visit when in the village.
Beautiful old building with a remarkable history through time.
The various items on display show us the various uses of the building through time.
Don't try the thumb screws!
Excellent guides who really know their stuff about the building, it's history and Lavenham.
An excellent visit.
Well done everyone.

Situated right in the centre of the market square, this building has lots of tales to tell ... and I'm pleased to say the exhibitions inside it's ancient walls tell many of those tales. I particularly liked the 1943 National Council Film archive that gives a glimpse into village life, well before any real mechanisation or technology ttok hold. The War exhibition was also fascinating and really amplified what life was like in Lavenham during the war years.
There's a café and walled garden to round your visit off. Well worth a visit.

I’ve got to say that the Guildhall is most spectacular viewed from the outside. Going in didn’t add very much - the information within, one could pick up from a book or the internet. That’s not to denigrate the knowledgeable and friendly volunteers. The trouble is as with all national trust places they have to assume a low baseline of previous knowledge so it feels like it’s aimed at the “Year 8 school trip” market.
If you only have time or funds to do one thing in Lavenham I’d say go to Little Hall instead.

We have lived nearby for some time, but only very recently decided to visit the Guildhall. Wish we had gone along sooner! An incredible timber-framed building which has had many uses over the centuries. The craftsmanship and history of the building was brought vividly to life by Tom, a very knowledgable and enthusiastic volunteer who kindly took us through some of its highlights. A thoroughly enjoyable visit - the Guildhall complex must be a highlight of any visit to Lavenham (or indeed Suffolk!)

Set in this fabulous village of many old houses the Guildhall does not stand out, but it is a fantastic old building. The displays inside are very good though a few more information boards would be good Parking can be an issue but worth the effort. £8.50 each to get in was good value

The guildhalls is stunning inside and outside. A fine example of restored guildhall from the XVI century, it takes center stage in Lavenham beautiful Market Square. Managed by National Trust, it has a very pretty tearoom with decent coffee and cakes and a manicured garden

What an enlightening and entertaining visit! The Guildhall and neighbouring buildings are compact by National Trust property standards, but the history was brought to life by our guide Tom. Without his enthusiasm and very friendly and knowledgeable guidance we would not have spent over two hours being educated and entertained. Thoroughly recommended and special thanks to Tom!
