Beware Sunday shoppers !
Despite what it says above, this store does not open on Sundays. I have just had a wasted 20-mile round trip.

Friendly employees
Oct 2021
Came into the shop last Saturday to find a pair of shoes for my granddaughter and a young sales assistant called Ben helped me find the perfect shoes. Have come into Friary shoes a couple of times before and the staff have never been this friendly so this improved my experience here and will definitely be coming on Saturdays in the future.

Rude Employees
Aug 2021 • Family
I was queuing up to get my 13yr old daughter some new school shoes, she is a size 9 in adults and I find it hard enough to find them in her size and style just right for a teenager, when I finally got to go in I was faced with the most rudest woman I’ve ever encountered, she said abruptly “do you know about the £2 deposit?” I said no sorry I don’t! She huffed and said “you’ll have to pay £2 if you want to get fitted! I said that’s okay my daughter is a size 9 she’ll just try them on to see what’s comfortable, that’s when she fired back “well nobody will serve you!!” This took me back!, I said so your saying I have to pay the £2 no matter what! She then proceeded to say “no we don’t force you” I said oh okay I will pay the £2 then for my child to be fitted, my husband then said you don’t get the £2 back! I said yeah you do as the woman said it’s a deposit! She then fired back angrily “no you don’t get the £2 back if you don’t buy the shoes”. I then left the shop, I found this discussing how a shop can charge in this way, when there’s thousands of people out of a job & not many shoe shops about! It is conning people out of money!, their colleague needs to learn people skills and manners she was so rude!. I’ve worked in retail all through the pandemic and I’d never speak to a customer the way how she did.

Terrible after service
Aug 2021 • Family
We returned shoes back to friary shoe shop today as school shoes where far to big which we purchased a few weeks ago....there where limited styles in my daughters size so we had to go to Walsall clarks to get shoes she wanted....so on returning original shoes to friary the rude shop assistant told me it was there policy they couldn't refund only give me a credit note....I was so mad a credit note was no good as I had to buy my daughters shoes from another shop and needed my money back for the new shoes.....what use is a credit note when I need my hard earned money now to pay for shoes.....so now I have a credit note for a lousy shop who's after sales service is terrible and have to buy a pair of shoes when I don't need to.....I just want a refund .

Great Service
Apr 2021 • Family
I felt I had to leave a review as our experience was very good - unlike others posting recently it appears?

Our 7 year old was measured for school shoes on a Saturday after a bit of a wait due to CoviD compliance. Unfortunately the new shoes caused our daughter some discomfort after a couple of days. We returned to the shop, were measured again and alternative shoes supplied with no issues whatsoever. They do get very busy on weekends but this service when things haven’t gone to plan ensure we will return again with confidence.

Disgusting attitude of female sales person
Apr 2021 • Couples
My wife and I visited this shop (23.4.21)
My wife chose three pairs of sandals and asked for help, as to where to sit
We were inappropriately instructed to sit behind a seated customer (without any attempt to follow social distancing guidelines)
My wife said to the sales person that we would prefer to sit elsewhere, that was socially distant and that was obviously a problem to the female sales person
She snapped back to my wife with the comment, after my wife enquiring about sizes,in a very unpleasant and aggressive manner “ I am serving someone else”
My wife put down the three pairs of sandals and we walked out of the shop and will not be going back!
We have shopped many times at Friary, even before it moved to its present location and have never been treated in this way
May I suggest that this person needs to receive training in customer service and read the government COVID guidelines!
Given other recent reviews, the owner of this store needs to address the appalling attitude to regular customers, by the staff and remember that they pay for their wages, or contribute to their revenue
We responded by walking out and suggest that others think twice before shopping at this store

Appalling managerial attitude and service. Boycott this shop.
Mar 2021 • Family
After many years of patronage of Friary Shoes with our children, I took our twin grandchildren to purchase new shoes and wellingtons today. I was greeted by an assistant who said that we had to pay up front to have their feet measured. I was taken to whom I presume was the manager at the till and I enquired how that encouraged people who were of less able means than us (who would struggle to pay) to buy there. Very pompously, she said that “they won’t shop here”. I took issue with this and it was clear then that she had no interest in serving us.

I subsequently drove to Stafford to the Clarks Shoes store where we spent just over £100 on two pairs of children’s shoes and two pairs of wellies.

Truly, I wish I had read all of the other Trip Advisor reviews first where there are as many “terrible” reviews (citing rude service) as “excellent” reviews. I only ever write very positive reviews, giving credit where it is most certainly deserved. This is my first ever (and hopefully my last) “terrible” review. My experience today is clearly amplified by many others.

I have every sympathy for independent traders and, indeed, patronise them out of choice but my experience today left me so incandescently outraged that I feel such appalling service does not merit supporting.

I was prepared to pay the so-called service charge, fully intending to purchase shoes as I always have done but the outrageous attitude towards us as bona fide customers beggared belief.

I live 10 miles from Lichfield and last purchased two pairs of shoes from this store six months ago. I will not visit again and, like many other reviewers, would recommend that other shoppers consider whether supporting another retailer might be better.

I have never felt such a feeling of the shopkeeper being more important than the customer and today’s experience marked an all time low. I wonder how the proprietors would feel about paying to try on a dress or look at a book or examine a range of materials before deciding whether or not to buy.

In the end, we were very well served by a young assistant in Clarks Stafford and I was more than pleased that they had our custom.

Less than impressed!!
Feb 2020 • Family
Arrived today at 16.49. Yes cutting it fine for a 5pm finish however it was a mercy dash as current shoes fell apart. The shop was empty. Doors were locked. Staff saw us trying to get in and stood up and hid out of view. I appreciate it can take time bit surely one 9 year old wont take that long? It would have taken little time to see to our needs however to move and hide was ludicrous. My money will be spent elsewhere. First and last time I'll be there.

Don’t bother going
Aug 2019 • Family
I went in this morning to sort out school shoes for my daughter. I knew I would have to book a slot to be seen.
I only just walked in the door and a woman approached me, and said do you have an appointment, I replied no and how do I go about booking one, she didn’t listen to me and said straight away well there aren’t any until atleast the weekend, so again I said how do I book? again very rudely we have a ticket system but we don’t have any appointments.
At that point I said thank you but we shall go elsewhere.
I can’t believe how rude and unwelcoming she was and I would rather travel to Stafford or Solihull than go back to have that sort of service .

Best shoe shop for my 1 year old will come here every time she needs new shoes
Jul 2019 • Family
Visited this morning with my daughter and I have to say Claudine (I think the lady’s name was?!) is excellent at her job.
She was very thorough and made sure the shoes were a good fit and was very patient with my baby.
Choice of Clark’s and Startrite shoes.
I will be going back to this lady at this shop, every time my daughter needs new shoes.
