    Spend a day in Wells
This is a lovely place to spend the day, especially on market day. There are lots of independent shops including coffee shops and the Crown hotel offers lovely lunches that are reasonably priced. Pay a visit to the Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace where the swans ring a bell to get fed!

    Always good
Sadly, the day I chose to visit the market at Wells was also the day that the weather took a turn for the worse. Because of this, not as many stallholders bothered to set up their stalls. This was a shame, as it is always a pleasure to wander around the market stalls. There is always a butchers selling the best sausages in a bap. They may not be cheap, but the quality is perfect. I always make a point of heading straight to them and then eating my sausage whilst wandering around the market.

    Unique and relaxing
We went to the Wells market yesterday. They have a large variety of items. Very nice selection from handmade wooden items to baskets and clothes. We bought some really nice clothes at the booth near the cathedral and some cute duck items and wood items from the booth just about the end of the market. We ate at the Crown in Wells. William Penn preached there in 1605. The food was really good and we met some very nice people. Had a nice coffee in Wells and shopped in some nice shops on our trip as well. There are loads of shops there. Bought some absolutely beautiful flowers to put on my husband’s grandparents and mom’s grave. I would recommend checking this place out if you’re wanting something different to do and want to get a sense of the area and the culture.

Lovely area near the Cathedral with lots of cafes around it offering outdoor seating.
great vibe especially on a sunny day.
Don't miss the 'monument' / tribute (can't think of a suitable word) to local Mary Rand who broke the world long jump record in 1964 and was the first British female to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field. She remains the only Great Britain female athlete to win three medals in a single Games. It is set in the floor towards the corner where you pass through into the Cathedral grounds.

Plenty of interesting things to see in easy walk of the market place. There's a market there on Saturday and Wednesday with stalls selling food, clothes, plants and other sundries. The actual shops in the area are mainly food, charity shops and touristy with a couple of clothing shops. There's parking for a few pounds in the car parks or at nearby Waitrose. There's parking on the streets for limited periods so if you're only popping in for an hour then you should hunt around for a space rather than paying unnecessarily. The city is small but it's compact and easy to access all areas on foot. There's a walk to the woods and on the outskirts of the Bishops Palace. A nice place to spend a few hours ambling about.

Surprised to see that the public litter bins are still the old fashioned type and don't cater for recycling.

The only greenery consists of flowering plants in planters. Could do with more trees and shrubs.

The most disappointing thing is that traffic is still allowed through the tiny city centre. This will certainly put most tourists off from visiting.

For such a small place, the city council should certainly pedestrianise the city centre.

This is a lovely little 'city' - it's very much like our market towns in Shropshire. We visited the market on Wednesday (it's also on a Saturday) Local produce on sale, clothing & leather goods and some quirky stalls too. There are lots of smaller, independent shops in the town. Plenty of places to eat & drink.
Well worth a visit.

Well what a surprise! Markets generally are on decline these days, but this one certainly isn't. Loads of stalls. Local Farmers, Growers, Crafters, the list is endless. It was a very wet day, but trade was brisk. So pleasing to see.

Wells is a lovely small city and has a very nice market area in the centre, next to the cathedral close. It is attractive and is home to a very nice public market with food and vendors selling a wide range of things. It is not as big as some, given that Wells is a small city, but it is very nice and fun.

We were on a day trip to Wells and planned it to be when the market was on.

There is a nice variety of products - fresh food, hand made items, clothing and more.

There were also places to eat and sit around the outside for local businesses too.

The market when we visited was just outside the Cathedral and Bishop's Palace.

Would recommend for supporting small businesses as a nice outdoor market

The architecture in this historical square is simply stunning. A real slice of history. As massive fans of the film Hot Fuzz it was cool to strike a pose in the square. Missed actual market day but did enjoy a lovely coffee.
