Amazing place!
Apr 2021
Had a super visit to Ham Wall. Arrived early 9.30am- very few cars in the carpark. Well kept and signposted walk ways- really enjoyed the boardwalk area and the fact some of the hides and look out areas were open. Amazing bird watching- ticked so many off the list! £3 for all day parking was great and meant it was easy to combine a visit to Shapswick Heath aswell! Thankyou Ham Wall!

Fantastic nature reserve
Dec 2020
Excellent reserve. Good sightings of march harriers and great egrets. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Starling murmuration was awesome.

Note: £3 payment for car parking on card NOT phone or coins - suits me.

An afternoon walk around a RSPB nature reserve
Sep 2020 • Couples
We went to ham wall nature reserve in Somerset a couple of weeks ago but it started raining heavily when we got to the car park so we left and decided to go back later, we went there last Friday ,it's a RSPB site so the £3 car park for all day goes towards the upkeep, there were volunteers in a hut but outside was a lady who said she was a paid fundraiser and she had things for sale but because it was our first time at the bird reserve she told us how the reserve was established quite a few years ago with only a few bitterns but today they've got the most anywhere in England, and told us all the breeds of birds that have been seen over the last few days , and what to look out for if we were lucky and showed us a map to see the 3 mile trail, then we started walking ,it was a dry overcast day ,all good for a walk ,there were a few people in passing but the paths were wide enough , we walk to the end of the trail and then halfway back crossed over a river and walked back on a uneven grass back, there were bird watchers on their way to the only hide open because of the virus but we stopped a couple of times in the viewing bays ,but the only birds we saw that afternoon was a couple of swans with some cygnets on the river, there was some lovely views and very quiet , it was a lovely walk and didn't realize until we got back to our car that we had done 7 miles

A little off the beaten track but worth the detour
Aug 2020
We managed to find some shade on a very hot day. A peaceful place but the hides and a few of the smaller paths are closed due to Covid but it doesn’t stop you from enjoying a pleasant stroll.

A very special place
Aug 2019
We spent a lovely afternoon exploring Ham Wall last summer during a week in Somerset and having not really explored the levels before. The scenery and the wildlife are just spectacular and this is such a unique and special environment - fantastic for bird watchers and walkers.

My friend recommended this place and we certainly were very impressed. Lots of lovely, easy walks. Saw flocks of starlings in the early morning. A very memorable visit. We enjoyed the walk and the birds were a bonus. Thoroughly recommend it

Unforgettable starling murmuration and bird life in well maintained nature reserve
Dec 2019
What a great spot to see wetland bird life and a murmuration of (we were told) 250,000+ starlings set against the mystical backdrop of Glastonbury Tor.

The RSPB volunteers were friendly and informative, pointing us to the likely best spot to see the murmuration (also updated daily on the map of the reserve / and via a recorded message on the phone number given on the reserve's website ).

We spent a couple of hours walking around the well-maintained reserve, before an anxious wait to see if the starlings were going to check-in, unsure at first whether we were in the right spot as there were so few others around. But then the starlings gradually arrived overhead in separate flocks ranging from several hundred to many 1000 birds, until overall numbers swelled to tens of thousands. The sight of the birds swirling in the skies and the sounds of the many thousand wings of the birds in flight, and then of the birds chattering as they settled down for the night in the reeds was unforgettable. Some years back we'd traveled to Borneo to see the world-famous site of many thousands of bats emerging from the limestone caves at dusk. This was more spectacular by far and just on our doorstep....

The weather was cloudy and overcast - but don't be put off, the experience was great despite the weather.
