Used to be one of the finest and friendliest pubs in Shrewsbury. However, a new manageress seems hostile to anyone who isn’t a regular. I was refused entry for having a small dog, but dogs have been welcomed previously. On a previous visit, when I was permitted to enter, I saw other customers turned away (post Covid) because the pub was “over capacity”. A great shame - but the pub does the best pork pies in town, whether the manageress will let you have one is another matter. A great shame.

So I visited this pub with a couple of friends, on entering the pub I asked for 3 pint, but was refused and told I could only order half’s, odd but whatever three half’s please and some crisps, unfortunately there weren’t any crisp flavours I could eat but I bought a couple of packs for my friend’s to share, we sat down and were chatting and having fun when we were told to be quieter and not to use offensive language, I guess referring to an occasional swear word.
Ok so that’s really odd we thought we are in a pub not a library, but the final straw for this publican came when one of my friends remembered they had some cherry tomatoes and offered me one (as I couldn’t eat the crisps), I took it and said publican went berserk, ranting about eating food not purchased on the premises. I did point out that I had purchased crisps but couldn’t eat them and that it’s only one cherry tomato so not really a big deal given I had bought crisps and drinks in a largely empty pub, but no it was the end of the world and we were ordered to leave.
As someone from Shrewsbury, who knows Shrewsbury and it’s pubs well, I can say this is beyond unusual and most establishments are friendly and welcoming, so please visit one of them and don’t give this idiot your money. I should add that I’m well over 30, but what’s that even about? Get a life you sad little fellow.

Tucked away from the main street is this amazing little pub serving cask ales.
We always call in here and we even managed to get a seat in their fabulous little beer garden!
Choice of ales was good. Staff are always friendly.
Its not always open, so check when it is if you want to visit.

I’ve previously loved the admiral benbow. My husband and I had our first date in the benbow and since then it’s always been a rather special place for us to visit. It’s not open every night and we are aware small local businesses often struggle against larger places and have often gone out of our way to visit. Today I was humiliated by the staff. It was late on a Saturday afternoon and we had a 3 month old with us blissfully sleeping in his pram. We intended on popping in for one while he slept and we were waiting for the next train. My husband went in while I waited outside to ask if it was ok to bring a child in, the member of staff told him it was absolutely fine and so he ordered drinks and shouted to me and our friends to come in. I walked in with the pram and the landland shout no children!! Quite rudely! No children out!! No compassion, no quiet word saying sorry guys just OUT NO CHILDREN! I shouted at my husband at the bar who by now had half a drink poured where the male behind the bar clearly wanted the ground to swallow him up. Now I fully aware of licensing laws and public houses wish to accept children or not, that’s fine. If you don’t want children in your pub again that’s fine just do not embarrass me!!! People were looking round at us while you shouted from behind the bar and I’m totally embarrassed while in trying to turn the pram in the doorway while half to pub stare at me. There was absolutely no need for this. I suggest you treat customers better in future. Although I will no longer be one of those customers.

Visited on one of the hottest days of the year. The beer garden was cool and sheltered, just what the doctor ordered. The rear of the pub is a very old wooden structure, hundreds of years old but lovely.

Tucked away, so not very obvious when visiting the town, but definitely worth a visit! We only popped in as we walking by and ended up staying all evening!
Some great Shropshire Ales on for the other half, busy with locals, fairy lights and candles make it a lovely atmosphere.
I had a couple of red wines, which were really good quality. Loved it.
There was a bit of trouble whilst we were there between a couple of lads, who were then asked to leave, at which point some woman decides to get involved and slap him across the head for some reason (classy), but the lads left and it was all quiet again.
Nice outdoor beer garden, I should imagine it gets busy in summer.
It isn't open in the day, but seems to be 7pm until 11pm, most days and longer at weekends.
Great find.

Don't go here expecting food, this is about a true English Pub experience; with great local ales, beers and ciders. Other drinks available ;) Some snacks are available, Scotch Egg and Pork Scratchings, to name a few, but sitting around a small table with friends, with the feel of being in some one's living room, having the couple from the next table join in conversations, laughing and sipping beer is what it's all about. Places like this should never be missed and always be supported. Thank you to the Landlord for letting us enter so close to last orders and allowing us to enjoy the experience. Great place!

I went to this pub and was told that they now operate table service, this is ridiculous! While we were seated at the table three or four parties came in and promptly turned around, were very unhappy and left. This is the only pub in the whole of the town centre in Shrewsbury which operates this policy, which contradicts the government guidance.

I had not been in this pub for years but we went on Saturday 21 December,Great set up just what i like in a traditional pub, with a glowing open fire. The beers were excellent, a good choice of traditional real ales, however, there was a marked difference in the price of my round each time I went up to the bar, £9.00 for a pint and a gin and coke, quite stiff, my mate who was with me queried his round which was found to be £4.19 over to what it should have been. these days with automated tills this should not happen, the sum was done in the barman's head at a very busy time of the day, shame really , otherwise full marks to the pub.
