Beautiful little historic building

We are fortunate enough to live near to this little Greek Orthodox Church. We were given a chance to look into the church, shortly after we moved in, at an open social event. It is attractive from the ouside and is quite unusual inside. There are Greek icons across the front, which are rich and colourful, but there is also a historic wall painting next to these, which is quite faded but which shows the martyrdom of St. Thomas a Becket. There are some wooden stairs up to a little gallery area. This church is only open for services normally but English Heritage has several open days a year and there are a few social events.

If visiting, you cannot park on Dove Close as this is a narrow residential road, but there is a small road, signposted 'Orthodox Church', off Oteley Raod, between Murrell Way and Sutton Road. There is space to park a few cars on here and a footpath leads down to Dove Close, from where the church can be found, about 100 yards to the right.

BBQ and social gathering here at the oldest church in Shropshire. Great food and outstanding sweet pastries including Lokomathes, gobebya etc. All baked and fried by master chef Helen Maoudis.

surrounded by new houses now, the majesty of this tiny orthodox church remains undiminished. well worth a visit, especially during a service. you feel transported to a different, more interesting world. makes all other shrewsbury churches seem cold and dull.

Hidden gem is an overused phrase, but this certainly was.
Staff were welcoming and warm and it was a great experience for group leaders and children alike
Great to see something so different and evocative hiding in this building

Ancient church brought back to life
Jul 2016 • Family
A small medieval church, possibly more than a thousand years old, but certainly on a place where a church has been standing for more than 1500 years, fallen into disuse and restored by local Orthodox community.
