Waiting for our tram I chanced to look up the hill were I noticed this monument, a quick bit of googling revealed it to be Sheffield Cholera Monument.
The monument is in remembrance of the cholera outbreak in Sheffield in 1832 that claimed many lives ,erected in 1835 ,the work of Michael Ellison Hadfield, its a very poignant memorial, most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area and easy to locate behind Sheffield Railway Station by the tram stop.

Monument in memory of the victims of the disease of XIX.

Neo-Gothic style monument built in the mid-nineteenth century in memory of the victims of the disease of that same century. It is located on the hill above Sheffield train station.

Walk in the woods
Jun 2019 • Couples
A friend and I used to regularly climb up to the monument from the station. It was lovely to walk through Clay Woods & see/hear the squirrels and birds then rest and talk for a while on the bench directly in front of the monument. A bit windy but so peaceful with the city far below, nice when the sun was setting. As my friend recently died I shall have to do it alone in future but what memories!

Tremendous views over Sheffield City Centre
Mar 2019 • Family
Easy but uphill access from the station and tram stop.
The views are the second best in Sheffield*.
If you are new to the City you will look over nearly every important bit of the City and will help you orientate yourself with the Hospitals (except NGH?) Universities, City Centre and the western suburbs and the Sheffield bit of the Peak District National Park.
For established residents- see what has changed.
*The best views are higher up the hill towards eg just before Arbourthorne tram stop.

Nice view

A good walk from the city centre was rewarded with the view by the monument. There is a commemorative plaque near the monument that briefly describes the 19th century cholera epidemic in the city

Impressive monument high on the hill above the train station

Located high on the hill above Sheffield's main train station, the Cholera Monument is easily visible from the city centre.
Long slog to get up the hill to it, but its well signposted from the Ponds Forge area.
Nice views and impressive stone work.

Good place to chill out and catch some good views

Went here a few years ago after always thinking I'll go one day, and was worth it with all it's history. Defo recommended. Some people will just go as a one off and never go again but some may go back over and over again just for the peaceful atmosphere.

The monument itself is impressive and very clean considering its been sat above the city for 180 years.
There are a couple of information boards to donwith the area and the monument itself. It was bery windy here when i visited.
There is an amazing view of the city below you.
Worth a look.

Views make it

Walked up from the train station, monument to people that have died from a disease, did they give their lives so others could live perhaps, I dont know? Views over the city and surrounding countryside.

Nice memorial

Probably one of the oddest things to build a monument to. Having viewed it, it occurred to me that this is actually quite fitting especially in a city like Sheffield with it's working class past. A nice way to remember the people most likely to suffer from this terrible disease. There's nice views of of the city from the the gardens/graveyard too.
