Wouldn't go to Reading just for this. But if you're there and the weather is good enough then it is definitely worth a walk, even if it means a diversion from the most direct route from A to B.

As I was born and bred in Newbury, I have walked this canal on many many occasions. It’s a totally relaxing, peaceful walk with lots of wildlife to see. Always good when there are lots of barges present and waterways shows on.

We loved wandering along the canal and sitting near The Oracle centre where bars and cafes offer many delights. Great for people-watching!

Over the last 10 years or so the canal through town has progressed from what was a grimy mess to a central attraction, with bars, restaurants and nice walks along its sides. you can even boat along it if you are touring the greater length...More

If you are walking you can stay on the canal for the whole way. Some of the path is narrow and simply a grass track. From Bath to Devizes you will be sharing the path with cyclists. As far as how long it will take... More
