We walked along the Kennet and Avon canal following a Sunday lunch at the Rowbarge pub in Woolhampton. The children were particularly fascinated to watch the road swing bridge in constant use, and then just 50 yards further on the lock with long barges going through. With time and energy it is an easy walk along the canal to Newbury.

There is a lock and and a weir. In the summer you can watch the narrow boats go buy. More fun if you are on the boat!

Have just completed a cycle trip from Bath to Reading along the towpath, stopping overnight at Wootton Rivers. The section from Devizes to Hungerford is not easy cycling due to it being quite bumpy and not a proper path but otherwise it is all pretty good.

Not really a visitor attraction, unless there are bits I'm unfamiliar with, but the canal offers a nice walk out of town to its junction with the Thames without having to deal with traffic.

Although the Canal flows through the main towns in the area between these there is plenty of peace and quiet as you walk or cycle the towpaths. The paths and bridges are well maintained and the locks interesting to watch as the boats pass through.

I first walked the canal from the Floating Harbour in Bristol to Reading 3 years ago. The the path is well marked and in good condition. The intriguing thing is the history of the waterway, the interlinking of the river where it is navigable with the canal section, and the history of the railway line which runs within yards for...
