This place was on our pre match visit list before a trip to the Madejski.
Nice pub. Nice interior. My hocus pocus old ale from Loddon Brewery was very nice, but £9.40 for two pints is rather expensive, although locals tell me that's about average for Reading.

On my way back from Reading town centre, walking home, I stopped at this very charming looking old pub. I enjoyed a lager and lime and asked if they did food which they don't. Nevertheless a very nice pub.

Two small bars in "olde-worlde" style. Good selection of ales. Doesn't open on Sundays which is s shame as it has a lovely garden/patio in out the back which would great to sit in after a shopping trip. It's like a little country pub in the town centre. Well worth a visit.

This is a great traditional pub with great staff and customers.it may be a bit expensive but it is a very friendly and old traditional pub. I would 100% recommend this pub and definitely will come back again. Ignore the negative reviews on here as everyone here is made welcome. The barmaids here are very friendly and good at there job. A must visit

An Alehouse & Brewery since 1828 !! I wanted to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the brews of this institution. Hence when my villages told me that they want to treat me to local liquor offerings I asked if we could go to Allowed Arms and they all agreed. We enter the place and it was abuzz with activities, that day being the quiz day. When our turn came we orderef three beers and one Cider from the tap. The chap serving us went inside and got us the first beer . I found it a bit strange as he had just served others from the tap. However I thought that the beet must have gotten over. But when he went inside for the second beer and then again fir the third one I knew we had come to the wrong place. Three different types of beer which were on the tap and being served to everyone were not served ro us from the tap. We got warm beers from inside on one of the hottest day of the summer. When we sat down to check the beer one of our colleagues brought to our attention another strange behaviour. Every table but ours was offered the quiz paper. The person distributing did not even come to your table. So we had the tepid beer and walked out. I don't know who runs that place but a great piece of history is being brought a bad name by the gentleman who served us. It has been blacklisted by our group in Reading. Say no to racism.

I visited this pub earlier this week as I have been past it many times and never actually had the chance to go in, despite how nice it looks on the outside. Inside, it was disappointing to say the least. The Tudor-esque decoration would have been pleasant, if it simply looked like it had been cleaned this side of the Civil War, and the place had a cramped and dingy feel to it.
There was a tune session going on in the left hand-side room, but my friend and I wandered into the right hand-side first. The barman was friendly to us when serving, but didn't hesitate to loudly and rudely complain every few minutes about having to "put up with that noise" next door from the musicians all evening. The beer selection wasn't great, and the pint of Doom Bar that I had was £3.90 - a ridiculous price compared to the £2.90 that it is just about anywhere else in Reading. When one factors in that the quality of this pint was nowhere near as good as I've ever had Doom Bar before, I can only conclude that the pub is ineffective at storing its beers as well.
We stayed for one round, which came to over £8 for two beers. If one factors in the unfriendly staff and atmosphere in the "public" room over the room that had the tune session, it is not difficult to see why I will not be returning.

A lovely, very old pub, right in the centre of Reading. Very atmospheric, friendly, quick service, and reasonable prices given the town centre location. It's very much a local's pub, but also welcoming to visitors, and new faces. The jukebox is what you would expect from an olde worlde pub.
Mulled wine is currently available, as at the time of writing it is coming up to Christmas. Although we didn't try it as it's not to our taste. There is the usual selection of lagers, real ales, and a good selection of spirits and liquors. The draught cider is very good. If you check the specials board, there is an excellent scrumpy - Old Rosie.
There are 2 separate bars inside, one quieter than the other, and a large covered and heated outside drinking area (beer garden) to accommodate smokers, and people wishing to drink outside in the warmer weather. Even in today's cold weather, the outdoor heaters were very efficient and we enjoyed sitting outside on such a cold day.
This pub has a lot of history, and if you are interested in the paranormal, you won't be disappointed.
Normal opening hours are from 5pm to 11pm, except at the weekends when it opens earlier.
If you're in Reading town centre and want a nice pint in a friendly quiet atmosphere, after you've finished for the day's shopping or work, drop in and relax.

The Allied is an excellent place if you're looking for a mundane, uninteresting, manufactured, and quite tedious night out. Highly priced, uninspiring and a bit sterile. The beer isn't that exciting, the guest beers are kept better and cheaper elsewhere in the town. The staff appear to be like rabbits in headlights: young and a little anxious about their essays being handed in for Monday morning.
Shame. Such a beautiful building. The only saving grace is the juke-box; which does allow customers to depart from the pub's utter falseness.

This is such a cute pub, and very atmospheric. It has two tiny bars inside and a great range of ciders and beers. But the best is a huge outdoor garden (bigger than the pub, I think!) which is heated in winter and looks pretty cute in summer. Outdoors is always pretty full whenever I've stopped by.
I've always found the staff friendly and approachable, although sometimes there is a wait cos the bar is often busy. If you like somewhere with an olde-world traditional feel, this is a good place to go.
