Next to the Martyrs Memorial
Aug 2019
This church traces its origins back to the end of the 11th century, when the core of the present structure was built on the site of a previous Saxon church which had burnt down. It's located right in the heart of the City, just round the corner from Broad Street and more or less opposite the Randolph Hotel and the Ashmolean Museum. Like so many mediaeval churches, it has had many additions and much repair and refurbishment work, including some in the 19th century by a very young Gorege Gilbert Scott who went on to be one of the most famous designers of the Victorian era. As a high anglo-catholic church, it has a number of chapels but in general the interior is unremarkable, although there is a noticeable sense of serenity. there's a certain irony to the fact that the church is immediately next to the Martyrs Memorial to the three clerics (including the Archbishop of Canterbuy, Thomas Cranmer) known as the Oxford Martyrs, who were executed in Oxford in 1555 for heresy

Nice Church
Jun 2019 • Couples
This church is located at the top end of the Cornmarket shopping area on Magdelen Street. Though in a busy shopping area, it sort of blends into the surroundings and is a lovely old building, beautiful stained glass windows. Not far too off 1000 years old, it is quite amazing (in a good way!) that the UK maintains buildings like this. I also found it eerily interesting to see a graveyard in this busy consumer location.

Too close to Rome

Very ironic to see a shrine of anglo-catholicisn next to the Martyrs Memorial. Replete with notices of mass, high altar and stations of the cross. Interesting collection of books for sale at bargain prices.

Historic church
Feb 2018 • Couples
St. Mary Magdalen church is located on Magdalen Street on a kind of small island, surrounded by roads. The church has some great stained glass windows and some terrific history and is well worth having a look inside

What a lovely little church, "on a traffic island"
Sep 2016 • Couples
The church is situated on a large traffic island right in the town centre, even with a grave yard. The first wooden church was located here over a thousand years ago, but this church dates from 1194.....but now the church has become well known as a centre of Anglo-Catholic worship, ministry, teaching and preaching.

Wonderful Church in the center of it all
Jul 2016 • Couples
St Mary's church and cemetery offer the visitor a view of what it must have been like to go to services since the 1,100's! Amazing edifice and church history of the various additions over the century's and the restorations.

Very nice Anglo-Catholic church
Nov 2015 • Friends
St. Mary Magdalen is an Anglo-Catholic church. Beautiful altars and stained glass windows. The main altar was a little dark but the side altar was well lit. You'd be welcomed by a beautiful scent of incense from the service. Nice quick drop in for a tour, which is free.
