Support Great Independent Movie Houses !

Nice theatre experience. Good pricing. Go on Monday’s for special pricing. Great customer service, friendly staff. We need to all get out and support local independent businesses.

Got a 4:instead of 5 only because I am a popcorn nerd. It was not warm and no butter. Must be a Canadian thing, as it does not appear as common I the UK

A real cinema....!
Jul 2019
The Phoenix is a blast from the past for film buffs. None of the garish hype that mars the commercial chains, just a friendly and well managed venue with a great programme - very varied, something for everyone. Excellent refresments available, comfortable seating and good sight lines in bith screens from pretty much every seat. Not easy to beat!

Very decent independent cinema
Jun 2019 • Couples
In my opinion not quite as good as the Ultimate, but there's nothing wrong with the Phoenix, which is a decent cinema and which offers a great range of interesting films old and new.

Big Screen - Big Scream
Jun 2018 • Solo
This arty farty cinema has rules - lots of rules.
There’s a film you want to see? Not on general release? Do not go from the film distributors website straight to this cinema’s website to buy a ticket.
If you do you will bypass the rules.
The rules are not to be broken under any circumstances.
I had the misfortune to choose the ‘big scream’ showing - this requires you to have a baby with you to gain access (note the play on words there) - despite the cinema being empty and despite me being more than happy to share the whole cinema with a couple of mothers and their offspring, it wasn’t going to happen on David the manager’s watch.
Won’t bother again - never know what particular discrimination day you might stumble on.

A former favourite revisited
May 2018 • Friends
I went to the Phoenix more times in my youth than I can remember; I loved the eclectic mix of films, the comfortable atmosphere and the fact that it was an independent, located in the wonderfully quirky area of Jericho. Revisiting Oxford this year, I just had to return as it has been over 20 years since I last set foot in it. And it was a wonderful experience - the place has lost none of its charm, despite being updated (Screen 2 which used to be miniscule is a lot bigger now!) with friendly staff, a good bar on the top floor and pristine projection. It was just a joy to visit and restored my faith in cinemas (having suffered multiplex fatigue for so long now) as a place of great filmed entertainment. A good selection of films on show too from blockbusters to low-key independents. Highly recommended.

Lovely find.

We stumbled across this by accident, having been Christmas shopping and finishing supper early. Great little cinema and disappointed I have only found it now. You can park outside, the staff are great and the seats comfortable. Be careful with the cheese crisps thought. They were disgusting! All in all a great experience and one we will repeat again and again!

The only cinema I will go to
Oct 2017 • Couples
The main thing here is I have a problem with sitting for long periods of time. Firstly because I get back ache really quickly, and secondly because I don't like to be still for too long...Anyway. This is the ONLY cinema I have found which has comfy seats and that isn't all crammed in. The auditorium is.. small, but not too intimate, so wherever you sit there's a good view.
Maybe the first 2 rows would lead to neck craning...
And the film choice is interesting- A mix of the latest big thing and a few carefully chosen arty/indie types. They also offer SEN screenings, family nights for those with babies/toddlers, and a fair few 'silver screenings', which I can't comment on except to say that I like to see options for everyone.
Also, although I'm not a drinker, for those that do there is a bar upstairs and you're allowed to take your wine etc. in to the film!

Best cinema
Dec 2017 • Family
Have always loved the Phoenix - a Jericho institution - now my kids love it too. People seem to have more respect here for other cinema-goers than the chains. Better value as well.

The Community film enthusiasts meet here but not for a subtitled film
Mar 2017 • Friends
I have been to many films here, however the most recent was a subtitled movie that was non-visible because the floor does not slope and the whole script was too low on the screen to read. We were the first in the theatre too. Management, when told of my dissatisfaction, stated that the cinema intends to address this problem with a new floor. Anyone's guess is to when this might take place. So... in the meantime avoid foreign movies or sit flat to the screen in the front row. The bar upstairs in a friendly meeting place and there are eats at the downstairs counter too.
