lovely place to visit as a one off film viewing. DO NOT take out their membership for more than one year. Their computer systems cant cope with renewals on the same number and the cashiers in Oxford cant use the computer system to verify anything. They no longer send out membership cards if you are renewing so you need to download a separate app - even if only going three of four times a year. Very poor customer service and IT systems - if it doesnt work then do it manually maybe ?

This arty farty cinema has rules - lots of rules.
There’s a film you want to see? Not on general release? Do not go from the film distributors website straight to this cinema’s website to buy a ticket.
If you do you will bypass the rules.
The rules are not to be broken under any circumstances.
I had the misfortune to choose the ‘big scream’ showing - this requires you to have a baby with you to gain access (note the play on words there) - despite the cinema being empty and despite me being more than happy to share the whole cinema with a couple of mothers and their offspring, it wasn’t going to happen on David the manager’s watch.
Won’t bother again - never know what particular discrimination day you might stumble on.

I agree with the previous reviewer who described the poor sightlines in cinema 2; I have just been to see Elle on that screen, and my view was blocked by numerous heads in front of me. This was supposed to be a fun birthday trip but instead I was left frustrated that a decent film was ruined by a miserable viewing experience. I have seen films there before and without issue, which makes me think the seating has been altered for the worse. Despite my boyfriend being a Picturehouse member, I have vowed never to go back to this cinema. Instead I'm counting down the days until the Curzon opens.

A great mix of art house and more mainstream movies are available. Excellent membership scheme and friendly staff front of house and in the small upstairs bar. Much more comfortable seats than other larger commercial chains and the clientele are usually there to enjoy the movie, not chat or look at their phones. A Picturehouse for grown ups!

I LOVE THE PHOENIX CINEMA, it's the best cinema in Oxford. It's always a treat to go to the Phoenix; the staff are attentive and knowledgeable, they show a fantastic selection of films ( mainstream, independent and golden oldies), and they offer a range of interesting range of snacks. I have been going to The Phoenix for over 20 years and in all that time I've never had a bad visit. I came as a student, and enjoyed the discounts and the art house films, then later I came with my partner and we saw romantic comedies or horror films ( so that I could cuddle up when I was scared), and then later we came with our daughter to watch children's films. It's part of our family history, we come every year to watch the special screening on Christmas Eve to see an old classic movie. I've passed on my love of The Phoenix to my daughter and we sometimes enjoy a double bill, when we see two films, one after the other and then talk about them all the way home. If I had to choose a luxury for my desert island, I would choose The Phoenix; it's a place where you can loose yourself in the realms of a film, in comfort and with a gin and tonic!

The Phoenix is a blast from the past for film buffs. None of the garish hype that mars the commercial chains, just a friendly and well managed venue with a great programme - very varied, something for everyone. Excellent refresments available, comfortable seating and good sight lines in bith screens from pretty much every seat. Not easy to beat!

We stumbled across this by accident, having been Christmas shopping and finishing supper early. Great little cinema and disappointed I have only found it now. You can park outside, the staff are great and the seats comfortable. Be careful with the cheese crisps thought. They were disgusting! All in all a great experience and one we will repeat again and again!

Have always loved the Phoenix - a Jericho institution - now my kids love it too. People seem to have more respect here for other cinema-goers than the chains. Better value as well.

Friendly, helpful staff, imaginative programming and gloriously comfy seats make this everything you could want from a neighbourhood cinema. Plenty of bars and restaurants around on Walton Street, so easy to plan a happy afternoon or evening with everything you need right on the doorstep.
