It was like being back at school...
Sep 2020 • Solo
From the outside, this pub looks like something special. The building is untouched and walking up the steps was like stepping back in time. As I walked through I was slightly alarmed at the lack of people given how busy Oxford. As I was looking through the menu - I was rather aggressively told about the “digital detox policy!” I was forced to put my phone away even though there was only one other group on the other side of the pub. I felt like I was back in school. I turned around to see the sign that “encouraged beer and conversation.” Were they expecting me to have a conversation with myself?!

As I tucked into my food, another group tried to come in and the barman practically shouted at them to “stay where they are.” It was like watching a teacher tick off a group of students. Now we all need to be COVID aware but this doesn’t need to come at the cost of manners.

The food was okay and very competitively priced but I found the entire experience rather uncomfortable. Perhaps better with a group?

Quick drink on a weekend
Aug 2020
Just popped in for a drink here, mainly as I needed to use the toilet!

Quite dark inside and very quiet - I expect they were suffering from the rules on music not being allowed? I also noticed the signs saying that no phones or digital things were allowed. I understand the idea, but I also saw a barman tell off a lady who was looking at her phone which I think is a bit too far. I can understand if she was using it to make a phone call but just looking at something in silence is a bit unnecessary.

Toilets were excellent though! Genuinely impressed as they were clean, looked to be newly fitted out, automatic taps and dyson hand dryer etc. This is the sort of thing that, as a woman, helps me to make the decision between wanting to stay longer at a pub or visit again so worth noting.

Wish I hadn't
Aug 2020 • Business
So we where walking past and this seemed a good place to stop and eat. Tables outside full with people drinking and having nachos.

So we decided to get some lunch on the basis that the natchos looked good.

So I get the chicken burger and the wife gets the homemade pie.

Well the pie is homemade from tescos value selection. There is nothing good about the pie. Gravey it comes with is well brown salt. And chips under cooked. The chicken isn't mush better.

Wish we read the reviews before we sat down

Sam smith lager
Aug 2020 • Solo
Positioned a short distance from the Main Street the pub offers an array of Samuel Smith beverages. The organic lager is a very good pint.

Barmaid telling off for checking phones
Jan 2020
The barmaid told me off for checking my phone. I told her that I was not disturbing anybody. She didn't care. She said that the pub does not allow the use of mobiles or laptops because it is a "digital free space".
So, after our first drink, we left.
These radical rules are against of tolerance in a modern society.

Perfect lunch

So glad we avoided the usual chain restaurants in the Main Street. Great beer food and comfortable snug atmosphere with space to talk....

Fabulous food

We went in not expecting what we found. A great welcome. The lady behind the bar was lovely.
The chef couldn't do enough for us. The males both had the roast pork dinner and wow was it good! Proper gravy and the biggest Yorkshire pudding ever! I had the chilli which was great and my friend had the cheese and onion pie and the chef gave her cheesy mash to go with it.
Really nice pub and great food. Would highly recommend!

Friendly city centre pub with good beer and food
Oct 2018 • Couples
Stopped in for lunch on a busy and rainy Saturday afternoon. Everywhere was really busy and stepping in this lovely but fairly small pub didn't seem the best idea but we got lucky and nabbed a table. The beer (Sam Smiths) is good and reasonably priced (for Oxford). We ordered food and although we were warned there was a delay the wait wasn't too bad. All of the group enjoyed their meals - fish and chips, chilli and rice - all was very good. The atmosphere in the pub is good, the service is helpful and friendly, and the fare we tried was all excellent.

Quick stop for a lunchtime pint and some food while walking about Oxford. Little bar down off the street level. No music and no telly. What the hell? Is this a way to generate conversation? Can’t tell if this was accidental or intentional but I liked it. Beer was good, food was fast and well presented. Can’t fault it for a lunch time stop.
