Tom Tower, Oxford
Dec 2019 • Family
We also walked past Tom Tower which is a bell tower in Oxford, named after its bell, Great Tom. It is over Tom Gate, on St Aldates, the main entrance of Christ Church, Oxford, which leads into Tom Quad.

A splendid tall college bell tower!
Jun 2019
We were staying in Oxford for a couple of days whilst on our second visit to this delightful university town.
Our days there were spent enjoying leisurely strolls around the town visiting as many of the well known attractions as we could.
While undertaking one of those walks, we were on the main road known as St. Aldates heading in the direction of the War Memorial Garden and the Christ Church Meadow. In the process, we came upon the Tom Tower which stands atop the main gate entrance to Christ Church College.
This splendid tall bell tower features unique architecture culminating in a large pointed dome at its top. The bell tower is so tall that it can be spotted from some distance away and it is definitely a landmark structure in the town.
The tower was gaining plenty of attention from visitors as we passed by. It was a popular photographic subject with many taking photos of it, from a range of different angles.
Once we arrived at the War Memorial Garden, we discovered that there was a picturesque view of the top of the tower from that location.
Tom Tower is certainly a significant structure worth viewing by any tourist visiting Oxford!

Loud bell
Nov 2018 • Business
The tower is pretty interesting. It looks large and quite old. The bell seemed to be the loudest one around. Pretty nice.

Truly magnificent
Apr 2018 • Couples
This tower dominates the massive quadrangle of Christ Church College and can be seen from far up Cornmarket Street as it is so large and distinctive. It is beautifully proportioned and looks impressive even though it is part of such a huge quadrangle. It is certainly a fine example of Wren architecture.

Great Tom
Feb 2018 • Couples
Tom is the name of the great bell inside the Tower that is located in Tom quad inside Christ Church College and was designed and built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1682. When the great bell was hung, the college at the time had 101 students, which is why the bell is rung 101 times to mark a curfew for students at 9.05pm. The odd time is because precise time in Oxford is 5 minutes later than time in Greenwich.

Loudest Bell
Jul 2017 • Couples
This tower is situated in the centre of Oxford near St Aldates. It derives its name from the great bell, great tom, which is inside the tower. The bell rings 101 times in this imposing piece of architecture.
