Created in 1926, this First World War (1914-1918) memorial garden pays tribute to the members of Christ Church College in Oxford who participated in this military conflict. Running along the northern boundary of Christ Church Meadows, this Arts and Crafts style garden (Christ Church War Memorial Garden) is distinguished by its path made of Yorkstone slabs (stone composed of quartz, mica, feldspar, clay and iron oxides), its stone walls and its herbaceous and floral borders. An inscription and a sword are inscribed in the paving of the garden, a quote taken from the Christian allegory "The Pilgrim's Progress" by the English Puritan writer and preacher John Bunyan (1628-1688): "I give my sword to him who will succeed me in my pilgrimage. »

This is a lovely garden, and I would imagine being at its most beautiful in Spring. We visited in early Fall, and it was still colorful. This is across the street from the Alice in Wonderland Shop, and also the entrance to the Meadow Gate (where one enter’s the tour of Christ Church College).

My wife and I were thankful to stop off on a pleasant day at this beautiful memorial garden in the centre of Oxford. Well set out and maintained, the garden is located on St. Aldates and is a wonderful memorial dedicated to all that gave so much from the University of Oxford.

Even though there were quite a number visiting the abiding atmosphere was that of tranquillity and remembrance.
It was inaugurated in 1926 to honour those that had their lives taken during the horrific WW I.

Stunned and delighted to come across such a beautiful memorial garden in the centre of Oxford, away from the hustle and bustle of the crowded shops.
An absolutely gorgeous space to simply take a few minutes to reflect as you wander through.

This memorial garden at the west end of the meadow is a lovely little garden area. Very well kept and considering the number of people passing through reasonably quite. I always think gardena reas are a great place/idea as a means of tribute. Worth a visit for 15 minutes quite time.

Very close to christ church meadow is this memorial garden which is really beautiful and well maintained. with old beautiful architecture buildings in the background. The old buildings are retained to this day, which adds beauty to this place.

This elegant garden commemorated the Christ Church College dead of World War One and perhaps now more broadly memorializes the University's war dead. The designers and gardeners show close attention to suitable plantings and painterly sweep of color. The garden can be seen juxtaposed against the historic Christ Church buildings along the north edge of Christ Church Meadow, from a popular walking path that begins/ends at the gate on St.Aldate's Street. Of interest to gardeners and non-gardeners alike.

Is it an open space available to visit at any time or is it gated off with restricted visiting times? Thanks in advance
