About
Considered one of the oldest university buildings in the world, this is a superb example of Church Architecture from the 13th century. Standing in the very centre of Oxford, the University Church is the spiritual heart of the oldest university in Britain. The Church is free to visit, while tickets to go up to the Tower are £6. Good place to start
Showing family around some of our favourite sights and places in town. This was my natural choice, as the views are great if it’s a nice day. The crypt is interesting and the history of the building is incredible. Oxford has many colleges to view but this is a great one to start at. We had lunch afterwards and the chat was all about the Church. Big hit.

    Majestic with a trivia
Majestic church right in the University area. This place has Mahatma Gandhi on the roof. That’s more like a trivia and one might not be able to find unless you ask one of the friendly staff at reception.

Be brave and climb to the top
The church is lovely enough but the real fun is buying a ticket and climbing incredibly narrow (some might even say claustrophobic) stairs to the top of the church. I've climbed my share of European stairs (I love heights), but these just might be the narrowest I've seen. Absolutely no way you can pass someone coming the other direction - one party has to go up or down and duck into a small cubby hole to allow the other to pass. Great fun actually and something kids would especially enjoy. At the top you have panoramic views of Oxford - and especially the Radcliffe Camera and Bodleian Library directly below. And the gargoyles - there are lots of them and they're quite humorous.

    Fantastic views
The church itself is similar to many other churches in Oxford. However, the church tower is well worth a visit. Be aware that the climb is quite steep. The staircase is very narrow, and there are many stairs. But you get rewarded with one of the best views across all of Oxford and even the landscape beyond town.

Eat at the Vaults & Garden and climb the tower
This is a beautiful, peaceful church, very historic and an excellent place to escape the crowds and contemplate the more important aspects of life. Don't skip the tower; the climb is relatively easy, and you will enjoy seeing those amazing gargoyles and grotesques up close. Then have a bite to eat at the Vaults & Garden, an amazing, inexpensive casual restaurant on the north side of the church where you walk inside to order and then select your seat inside or outside. It offers a wide selection and much-needed refreshment to the weary traveler who needs a little break from pub life.

    Beautiful
Before ascending the tower it was great to see the lovely church and its fabulous interior. As the official university church since the 1200s there is so much history and tradition here. Marvellous architectural designs are to be seen in the exquisite stone work, both inside and out. Along the nave is a glorious vista with slender columns and arches leading to the altar that has a magnificent stained glass window as a backdrop. On the tower ascent it was interesting to see the Paris Clock mechanism from 1741 that was the first such to have a dial on the outside. Up to then people could tell the time by counting the chimes. With perfect viewing conditions it was rewarding to see the tremendous panoramas from the top. Taking in the gorgeous buildings and cityscapes.

    Excellent City of Oxford Tour!
Excellent tour! Our guide, Magnus, was an expert in the whole of Oxford. It is a marvellous city with a lot of history, you'll get a general view of the city and particularly you'll get to visit the Divinity School where a Harry Potter film's sequence was filmed. It's a tour which I recommend to do.

Climbing up the tower is one of my personal favourite things to do, as it offers a great view of the city I love. Great and relatively relaxed activity to fill an extra hour of your day. Nevertheless the "simplicity" of the view means not everyone will feel it's worth the 5£, especially as there are other places where it is possible to get a decent view (e.g. top of Westgate shopping centre).

I visted this Church seeking peace quiet and cool
Im afraid it wasnt much of these and thats saying much.
Adorned with 'Mary.staues outside and in and gilded Russian Orthodox
Icon plaques dominating the gift shop as a simpel worshiper I felt rather out of
keeping.
Currently due to Covid the place has been cleared of many pues.
I was advised to keep quiet as a small number of worshippers were attempting to
pray to a statue of the virgin in The Mary Chapel
I was further advised that photography could be engaged in on payment of 2 pounds cash to the overseas lady womanning the till.
I was further advised to wash my hands with soap.
There wasnt a lot to see inside and I was in and out in 5 minutes.
The elderly staff were seen mumbling with each other about me.
I think its beacuse I enquired why Cromwell didnt destroy the statues when he took over
Oxford.Maybe he did and they are replacements?
Who knows?
The exit leads to a graveyard,in which is situated a paying cafe,.
Not my cup of tea.

It is not as elegant and impressive as the Christ Church, but it is much more accessible, cheaper and in it you can appreciate the architectural elements present in the churches built in the late Gothic era.
Located in the center of Oxford, it can be considered as the spiritual heart of the Classical music concerts are organized inside, if one spends a few nights in Oxford and has a serious opportunity to enjoy one of them.
It has large outdoor patios through which it is a delight to walk
The interior is not lavishly decorated, but it still looks great, it is also very slim and bright.
Not many rooms are visited but it is worth stopping at those that are open to the public

The church has a lot of interesting history, some interesting tombstones in the floor, and some attractive stained glass (although there was a service going on at the time, so not all of the church was accessible).

However, the highlight was the climb to the tower. The climb is not for the claustrophobic, however! The final stairway to the top is narrow and quite steep, and there is no room to pass, so if you're going up make sure there isn't anyone coming down. It's worth it, however - the views of Oxford are beautiful, in all four directions.

I was delighted to be able to visit St Mary's Church on my most recent visit to Oxford. The young woman on the door greeted us pleasantly as we arrived. There is no admittance charge but donations are welcome - there is a 'swipe machine' near the door but you aren't put under any pressure to contribute.

St Mary's has some lovely stained glass windows and some interesting memorials dating from different centuries. The atmosphere in the church was lovely, so calm and peaceful and we could have joined a Eucharist Service during our visit.

We didn't have time to go up the tower to get views of the city, that will have to happen during another visit.

A lovely place, well worth a look if you're exploring the area around the Radcliffe Camera.

That was the best place to view Oxford University campus. My son and I went to the top of the tower roof. It was a stunning view, though you should climb 127 steps plus paid £5 each. But definitely, it worth!

We called in on a walking tour of Oxford. Our guide took us upstairs and explained about the history of the building. It was fairly busy with tourists and an organist was practising which made for a good atmosphere. There is a plaque listing martyrs who have been executed in days gone by in Oxford. Free to enter.

Peaceful church, interesting sights inside (including the burial of Amy, wife of Robert Dudley who died under ‘suspicious circumstances’), a memorial to Protestant martyrs eg Latimer, Ridley, Cranmer and the sight of where Cranmer was tried before being killed. Lots of information around the church and in a helpful free guide. Didn’t go up the tower as it was a bit rainy but I imagine the views are stunning.

Wandered in here after taking photos near the Radcliffe Camera. The church and the area is beautiful. The church was a peaceful respite from the heat. We were hoping to go up the tower for the scenic views but decided against waiting in the 30 min queue. The tables outside were busy too.
