Tour description : http://www.oxoncarts.com/tour.html Due to the “riders” being away from school on term break; our very limited time in Oxford; and our last minute booking; we were unable to take the tour. I want to say, however, that for those who are mobility limited [like myself]; I believe that the Oxon Rickshaw Tour is a great way way to see the University Campus and Oxford city center. From the map [see link] you can see that their tour covers much of central Oxford and of the University Campus. Riding in the cart will save your feet, knees, legs and lower back from the stresses of about 2.5 miles of walking. Additionally, the bicycles can go where the hop-on-hop-off bus, regular city buses and taxis cannot - pedestrian ways, blocked off streets and on many of the campus walkways. Also, they can stop to allow you to take pictures almost anywhere along the route. Can they carry a walker? probably; a fold-up wheel chair on the back? I don’t know. I don’t have that that need yet. My own limitations are uneven terrain, steps [more than 30 up/down] and limited endurance.

I had been concerned about a rickshaw in Oxford's busy traffic but my wife and I (290 lb. total) were no problem for the pedaller and the Oxencart proved ideal for the ancient centre of Oxford.. The cycle rickshaw met us in Broadstreet (Sunday 1130) exactly as booked (the day before). It proved well able to deal with Oxford traffic and to weave between bollards so we could also use the cycle-paths and footpaths between the historic buildings. The pedaller knew all the Colleges and other historic buildings (inc. the many pubs), with a few facts or tales about each that we passed. There were stops too so we could take photos or discuss more at points such as the "bridge of sighs" or Radcliffe Camera. I guess you would need several of these one-hour tours to see everything in the centre. We took a loop to the North, up around the Victorian colleges and the Pitt-Rivers museum and arranged to be dropped off at the Ashmolean museum in time for lunch. It would have taken a couple of hours to walk the route we followed, which would have been hard work on a hot summers day if you didnt have the cooling breeze from the Oxoncart's progress.

We booked our tour Just a couple of days before our visit. Luckily, there is parking in Broad Street, right where you are collected from. Very polite and knowledgeable driver/guide. You can more or less choose what you would like to see, or leave it to them and see all the best bits. You can also stop and take photos when you like. Thoroughly enjoyable hour (or more if you choose) spent on our tour, traveling down old passage ways and back streets, where tour buses just can't go! My husband has difficulty walking and our guide peddled down to our car to collect us. Pre book only! Certainly different! We loved it!

After reading the reviews about these tours, I was expecting something really special. But we were a little disappointed . We did not get our full hour. The young guy who pedalled our rickshaw was very nice and did tell us some intersting facts about Oxford. But we did quite a bit of travelling on the busy, noisy streets and he stopped frequently to tell us about Oxford, whereas I would have preferred that he kept pedalling and stop only once or twice. We did not know anything about Oxford and were hoping to see more than just the town itself. It would have been a nicer experience if the tour had included some of the river.
