About
High up in the Chiltern hills, Warburg Nature Reserve is a magnificent place for its wild, remote tranquillity. The flower-rich grasslands in the valley bottom give way to grand woodlands rising up the valley sides.Warburg is home to an incredible range of habitats sheltering thousands of species, and each season there is something interesting to experience. In spring, the woodland is awash with spectacular bluebells and wood anemones. In May and June the reserve has a dawn chorus second to none. The wide sunny rides and open glades of chalk grassland are full of summer flowers, including pyramidal orchid and swathes of aromatic wild marjoram and thyme. These are followed by autumn and Chiltern gentians and glorious colours throughout the tree canopy, while down below, an incredible 900 species of fungi grow. In winter, you can enjoy magical frost along the valley bottom.

- Paul24 contributionsPeace and quiet in the Oxfordshire countryside a few mile from Henley!A fabulous place to lose yourself in the peace and quiet of the Oxfordshire countryside. Both hides are now open and someone has put a lot of work into tidying them up and adding white boards to record your sightings as well as a series of photos of birds at one of the ponds. The picnic area has also been tidied in preparation for the warmer weather. I would highly recommend a visit to this beautiful reserve!Visited April 2022Written April 1, 2022
- Julian31932 contributionsHeavenly. What a wonderful Wildlife Trust nature reserve, hidden away at the end of a long, long Chilterns Lane. Superb walk, full of woodland and grassland wildlife even in the depths of winter. Marsh Tits, Raven, Buzzard, the many Red Kites of course, Spurge Laurel, Velvet Shank fungi, brilliant displays of mosses and lots of signs of good manangement amongst the many highlights. I'd love to go back in spring or summer.Visited December 2022Traveled with friendsWritten December 27, 2022
- canndymanMaidenhead, United Kingdom364 contributionsBeautiful nature reserveWe really enjoyed our visit to Warburg - it was so peaceful and calm, and we felt really at home with nature. There are guided walks and lots of info on what to look out for as you go, and it's clear this place is very well looked after and maintained. There is quite a long, bumpy and quite narrow approach road, so bear that in mind when you visit - but it did add to the sense of being somewhere quite remote and away from the hustle and bustle! It's a beautiful place, and we'll def be back to make use of the picnic area.Visited June 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten June 29, 2022

We love walking and nature. We loved the Warburg Nature Reserve. How wonderful that the woodland trust and their volunteers maintain places like this for us all to enjoy.

Yep - you need to drive slow on narrow roads that have been there over a thousand years, smell the bluebells, check out the raptors, visit medieval ruins, pass centuries-old farm houses, see deer and pheasant and reach the end of the derivable road in hidden woods that offer solitude and miles of hiking, biking and riding trails. You want Disney Land? This is thankfully not it.

Ignore the complaints about road access (a little bit of patience is all that is needed).
Ignore complaints about benches (you are not there to sit down). Ignore complaints about maps and directions. Ever heard of an OS map? A tiny bit of effort is rewarded with a superb woodland walk. And the visitor centre (with toilets) is very good, having an excellent display panel of everything you could possibly want to identify. A good job done.

I would have given this reserve five stars but it was truly a nightmare as far as vehicular access is concerned, so maybe even four stars is too generous. I see that a couple of other reviewers mention the single track road to it and how it seems to go on forever, but no-one mentions the gigantic potholes. Perhaps the recent snow and extreme cold made these a lot worse, but when we visited last week it was truly horrendous and we were worried about meeting an oncoming vehicle, as we might have had no other option but to drive into one of the craters and hope that the car would make it out again. It's possibly a good thing, because it's peaceful once you get there with great paths and a lot of wildlife to see; perhaps a lot more people would visit if you didn't have to run the gauntlet of that truly narrow road with its endless potholes. Until the road is fixed, we won't be going back with a car. If you like walking, I can thoroughly recommend it.

My wife and I visited the Warburg Nature Reserve one Sunday and were struck by how lovely and quiet it was. The area is perfect for a peaceful walk, and includes a few steep climbs which are rewarded by stunning views of the surrounding countryside. It is a bit tricky to access due to the single track lane that leads to the Visitor Centre, but this is probably a good thing (as it might limit the number who visit!)

Hidden away at the end of a remote single track lane is this wonderfully tranquil nature reserve, visitor centre and trails. Too many visitors would spoil this place. I will say no more
