Excellent meal in this country style pub, lots of rustic charm and friendly staff. Excellent value for money and excellent quality of food and drink.

Brilliant specials board and great ambiance. Clean and tidy inside.

Not the best experience
Sep 2021 • Couples
This was one of the only places we could get into for lunch on a late Saturday afternoon, so we were quite hungry.

We were sat in a separate area which was great as we had a large dog with us and someone came to set up the table. After that we did not see anyone for a while and we thought perhaps we need to order at the bar. This was not the case and I was told to sit back down and someone would come and take our order. They did, and we got our drinks soon after.

We ordered two courses, two soups to start and then a fish and chips, and a burger. 40 minutes later our mains arrived, and we said to the waiter that we had not received our starters yet. He went to check it out and it turns out the person taking our order had not put them through. I’d like to add it seemed like the person who took our orders was the manager as he said he was going upstairs soon after and for the staff to try and not bother him before 6ish when he planned to come back down.

Our mains were OK, a bit bland. The burger had a bacon jam in it, which ruined the meal, so I would recommend asking for it without.

We appreciated being allowed to dine on a late Saturday afternoon, but the service could have been a lot better, and it would have been nice to have received our starters. And it was nice that it was a dog friendly pub and they seated us in a separate area. Unfortunately I would not go back though.

Sunday lunch

Passing by I decided to stop for lunch. a bit last minute but the pub kindly accommodated the two of us.

The staff were friendly and the food was fine. In fact the food was very good value. I thought the entire menu was reasonably priced.

I think we we’re unlucky as ‘the system’ crashed and we waited a little over an hour after being seated for our food which meant we ended up being a bit rushed. Not by the staff, by our onward journey.

The pub has charm and is worth a visit but if I revisit the area I’ll probably try out one of the alternative village pubs.

Visit this pub a couple of times in the last few days.

On Wed night we had a meal.

Service was immaculate.

I had the lamb rump special on Mediterranean veg, very nice indeed.

The homemade pie was popular in our group of six & the ones who had it said it was superb.

Will definitely visit again if I’m in the area

Disappointing and COVID rules virtually non existent

One of my favourite actual pubs in this lovely town in the Cotswolds and delighted to be invited to go for the first time since a change of personnel.

The food was actually average overall with mussels and beef stew really good and venison with lentils sadly dry and, therefore, a little tough.

We loved the staff attention and assistance but were very worried about the proximity of tables and the fact that there was no request for information as to who we were or where we live never mind an opportunity to use our NHS app to check in.

Sorry but the last important factor means that we will not be back until these important factors are addressed as we are in the “vulnerable categories” and the average food on offer does not warrant the risks involved in eating it.

Once this issue is properly addressed, I assure you of our custom but not until....

Nice Lunch
Aug 2020
Visited here for the first whilst visiting the area.
The food was good and the portions were fine.
Burger was large with some nice crispy chips and Fish finger sandwich was great with two large pieces of fish in breadcrumbs.
Coffee was a quite strong and dense.
Venue was nice and homely, we sat in the conservatory area (barn).
Meals were a bit pricey but quality was good

Great Pub
Feb 2020
Had a table in the bar on at Saturday early evening after matinee show at the adjacent theatre. (Geeves and Wooster, excellent fun).
Love this pub, great selection and variety of ales (the Bibble as recommended by the young barman suited my hop-biased taste buds). Service was personal and prompt, food spot on - the cheesecake with its hazlenut base was a showstopper. Good value, great atmosphere - why go anywhere else?

Just returned from this traditional pub and had an excellent pre-Christmas lunch with our family of 17. The service and food was very good served by very obliging staff. Bearing in mind the number of people in our group with all very different requirements nothing was too much trouble and best of all it was all served beautifully hot.
Incidentally, we weren’t the only customers in this lovely pub but everyone received the same excellent service by a small band of lovely staff. Well done.

Excellent "home cooking"!

I had the pie of the day - VERY tasty chicken, bacon & mushroom in a deliciuos suet crust, mixed green vegetables and a jug of gravy. My husband had the Wednesday special - an ENORMOUS portion of spare ribs in a tangy barbecue sauce with chips. We thought the food was reasonably priced, the waitress was friendly & attentive & I was delighted to see that the chef was a lady - congratulations to her & all the team!
Although we visit the next-door theatre frm time to time, we'd not been to The Chequers for a number of years, due to a very different previous experience, but we'll certainly return!

For Guildford Barbershop Harmony Club on tour this was an excellent place to eat drink and sing. Our group of about 35 was accommodated with ease. Meals were served in a timely fashion. It was typical pub grub of an excellent standard and reasonably priced.
