Loved this building. Had a lovely atmosphere. Incredible to think who had walked on those shined-up stones outside the library - and who built the enormous sandstone walls?
Loved that this little town has a library.
Long live the library.

I drive through this idyllic village twice a week. To and from work.

Only today I rang my partner on my way home and said I am just driving through Burford and was telling her how nice it is.

My partner has not been down that neck of the woods and was talking about having a break this year so she could see where I work. IE the surrounding areas.

Burford is certainly we will spend a day at. It is amazing to see such a small village have so much on offer while retaining such charm.

It is a breathtaking place

Although most visitors don’t get beyond the main street of this popular village on the Eastern fringe of the Cotswolds, there’s much more to it than the shops, pubs and restaurants there. There are some lovely traditional houses in the side streets, notably along Sheep Street. Another highlight is the magnificent St John the Baptist church with its rich architecture and history. There’s a big garden centre on the outskirts. Very well worth a visit, though be aware that the main road is very steep!

What looks like a single road town with a wealth of beautiful Cotswold stone buildings does have small ginnels off the road that are fascinating. Lots of very old architecture - look out for it all.

A mix of independent shops and small, exclusive chains.

Some antiques shops with a lot of good items - at tourist prices (probably around 30% higher than a good retail price)

Burford is real Cotswold Town. I say real because some of the others, for instance Broadway and Bourton-on-the Water, seem almost "Disneyfied". Or maybe they were built as set for Midsomer Murders. But they're very popular with tourists, so they must be doing something right. In fact there are so many that tourists go just see the tourists. Probably.
But Burford isn't like that. It isn't twee - it's a proper, working Cotswold town - or at least that's what it seemed like to us.
It's certainly historic and picturesque, built around the High Street that drops down from the A40 to the River Windrush. Ths shops are mostly local independents - there is a Joules but my wife says that's okay. There's also a Co-op, but as it's a "real" town it's got to have a supermarket, and it's fairly small.
But they've also got shops selling stoves, antiques, crafts, gifts, toys, all sorts of local produce, cheeses, and clothes. And I'd never seen a shop selling solely brushes before. There are also pubs and an excellent bakery/coffee shop (Husskins). We dropped into the Lamb Inn (on Sheep St., off the main road), which I've reviewed separately.
They sell a lot of country style clothing here - obvious really, when you consider the location and I particularly liked Elm of Burford. Probably because they sell Akubra hats which I haven't seen in the UK before.
Not only is Burford worth a trip, I'd recommend a weekend stay.
We can't fault it.

Burford is a one street town, The High Street showcasing its centuries old history in every possible way.

Explore its quaint shops. The Mad Hatter has a really good collection of books if you are the reading type, along with a crazy collection of hats. An unusual combination, but there you are. A cheese shop with a vast collection of local cheese to offer. And of course the pubs. Warm, cosy and inviting with the laughter poring out onto the streets.

But remember, its a small town and the pubs do not serve food after 9. Though the bar is normally open till 10:30 or so. That is there definition of a late night out.

We really enjoyed our visit to Burford, such a pretty village. Lots of lovely shops but one stood out as far as customer service goes... Orvis, a gentleman's outfitter's. Top quality mens wear with top quality service and quite affordable. We were made to feel really welcome here. My sister was looking for a hat for her boyfriend and the staff were so lovely... much appreciated... would recommend.

The town of Burford lies just off the busy A40 road, is made up of a selection of buildings in honey coloured Cotswold stone. It is built either side of a steep hill, which makes the town look delightful. There is a free car park which is a great asset, it is near the lovely church of St John. Taking a left turn if you are going up the hill, you go past the church and can park near a small stream.Once parked, there are some lovely coffee shops, pubs, antique shops, even a shop called Orvis where you can buy everything for fly fishing, a place to spend a few hours browsing and gaining the calories required for shopping!.

Burford was a bit of a disappointment. The church was nice, and on this particular day they had a art gallery exhibition, but the shopping street was not too much to write home about.
Some tourist shops and pubs, and a busy main road going right through the city...

I visited the Cotswolds for the first time and the weather was lovely which indeed helos but at Burford we had a lovely time. The town is small but very nice. The shops, the cafés, the houses the hotel, everything was neat and clean and very well kept. The village church is also very typical. We had a very nice tea with scones and Walter around the village under the sun. Highly recommended
