It's a pretty standard park to be honest, but it's very pleasant - nice for a wander, etc. There's a little cafe as well which is perfectly good.

Get the tram which is through the station towards pheonix park or hucknall and get off at the arboretum. It is a great place for a family picnic

Yes, it’s ideal for a picnic. Depending on your mum’s mobility it is walkable from the city centre; probably 20 to 30 minutes.
