Really grand place for a walk along Public Footpaths - chosen as a guided walk during the National Dark Skies Celebration on the North York Moors National Park website.
So wishing to attend as a threesome for this 3.5hr walk I was horrified at the advertised price. ÂŁ30 Per person (meeting a friend at the car park) two cars for which there is also a Car Park Charge.

Sorry but this is not going to encourage people to to come - it is just GREED.

We’ve visited this area over half a dozen times and always come to The Hole of Horcum for one of our hikes. There are so many walking routes to choose from - around the rim, down in the hole, out to Skelton Tower, etc. One can also include Levisham Station (for NYM Railway) and refreshments at the Horseshoe Inn. We never tire of the beautiful views and as there are so many paths we’ve never done the same route twice. Will be back!!

We’ve passed by this unforgettably deep cauldron, located in the North York Moors on the side of the A169, many times on our way to Whitby and finally found the time and energy to cross the busy road and descend close to the edge of this huge hole in the ground! We descended quite gingerly down the 3 steps, the last one being quite steep, and followed the footpath down into the gorge below. Walking over the moorland we enjoyed the heather-laced scenery. We visited in June just before the heathers come into full bloom, in July and August, when a carpet of purple covers the moors.

The Hole is part of the Levisham Beck valley in the Tabular Hills in the North York Moors National Park, and it's 400 feet (120 metres) deep and about ¾ of a mile (1.2km) wide. After a few impressive photos we regained the car but stopped again on the road to Whitby to get a look at the RAF Fylingdales, another unusual sighting up Snod Hill on the opposite side of the road to Horcum’s Hole. This is a Royal Air Force radar base and part of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System for both the UK and the US, one of three. Well worth a visit, especially on a sunny day, such as we had.

A lovely walk , but in parts the paths are overgrown and hard to follow but otherwise the views make up for this. Beautiful views over the North Yorkshire Moors. You park in a proper car park run by the National park (fee payable). We only walked half way round and the back through the bottom which took about 2 hours. Its not an easy walk and in places can be quite strenuous, walking boots are a must.

Stopped here on the way to Whitby. A lovely location for sure. Accessed by a crossing a busy road only issue I have is there is a food and drink stall but no loo of any description. And when you are paying ÂŁ2 minimum to park one would expect some facilities.

Very manageable 6 mile walk from Levisham, park by the Horseshoe pub and return for a welcome drink or more. Part of the walk is exposed, could be bleak in poor weather. Well maintained path, great views over the Moor.

Very picturesque and entirely doable for all. Just follow the main path on the right hand side after crossing the road from the Saltergate car park and have fun. Lots of sheep and the like await you. The valley itself is very nice. There are various routes around Hole Of Horcum and I would suggest researching the pathways properly. We were directed to turn right at a gate to make it back up to the HOH ridge, but we either missed it or otherwise couldn't find it.

Instead we decide to do the trek from HOH to Levisham.

Just be warned if you intend to do the trek from the Hole Of Horcum to Levisham that it's not for the faint hearted. If you have any fear of heights at all, you would be better advised to spend your time here differently. We made it all the way down to the little wooden bridge that crosses the stream which was really very pretty. It is after this that the path tends to get thin as it winds around the valley and there is sheer drop off on your left hand side in rather a lot of places. I do have a fear of heights and realised that there wasn't any reasonable way to backtrack after a certain point and no real means of escape, I kinda had to just suck it up and do it. I managed to do it in the end but if I would have known about that path I think I would have opted for a different direction or backtracked. I may be a scaredey cat but hopefully if someone has acrophobia as bad as me, this may serve to suggest finding a different route.

The pub at the end (Horseshoe Inn) was worth making it though. It was a nice place to settle down and relax after the trip. The hole of horcum and valley though was a very lovely place to hike around.

Plenty of spaces in the car park at 1pm on the Friday before a BH. I walked in a 10 mile loop taking in the Bridestones and down into the bowl of the Hole. Mostly lush farmland with a bit of moorland, but good variety and plenty of views. This way you can see the Bridestones, vol-au-vent shaped rocks in a rich terrain without paying the Dalby Forest Road toll, but you need a good map, as the back end of the route is not that popular.

Fantastic views on a beautiful day. There's a well followed circular walk which finishes with a long slog up from the Hole itself, but was well worth it. The car park is a good size and is payable - ÂŁ3.80 for greater than two hours. Amazingly, it's cash only - who carries ÂŁ3.80 around with them? Come on National Park - get your act together - it's the 21st century - contactless is possible on car park payment machines and is preferable in this time of covid security

Me and my pals had a great day doing the 7 mile circuit of the hole from Saltergate car park, including the detour to Skelton Tower. The walk offers fantastic views, different terrain and a moderate level of difficulty. Absolutely beautiful place that I will return to for sure.
