We traveled the Military Road west from Heddon-on-the-Wall, stopping periodically to see the sites. We found Housesteads to be the best-preserved site, at least along the stretch between Carlisle and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. There is a fee to park, with a self-pay booth adjacent the souvenir shop/ticket...More

We traveled here to see hadrian's wall and the Roman fort ruins. They have a quite small museum with some grumpy employees. They charge 9 gbp to see the ruins and museum plus 3 gbp to park. Very interesting history, but expensive for what you...More

The fort is interesting but £20.30 for a family ticket and paying for parking on top I think was a little steep for a wind blown February. Frankly I felt a little had paying a total of £25.30 for what amounted to a struggle to...More

Grumpy warden who had a go at us for climbing a fence when he’d left the gate locked onto the public footpath. No signs explaining we were expected to walk through the gift shop with our muddy boots on.

Driving west from Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the A69 towards Hexham presents an excellent opportunity to visit the amazing Hadrian's Wall, located a few miles to the north. Driving past Chesters Roman Fort exhibit (reviewed separately), you come to the massive Housesteads Roman Fort exhibit. This is...More

Wonderful place with great explanatory plaques around the site and strategic location to actually take off and walk along the wall.

We were touring the North East in our Motorhome, so knowing we were going to visit a number of English Heritage Properties, we took out joint membership. Just visiting some of the sites costs £7.50, so the membership made sense. As many other Heritage Properties,...More

Houseteads is an excellent way to see how the Romans lived while garrisoned here, the actual feat of building a wall many metres tall across the whole of the north is mind blowing, also the fact that they incorporated hot running water fir bathing etc,...More

At least an hour, more for the museum and shop too, and consider the walk from the parking lot to the ruins AS well. Fascinating place!
