78 Derngate is the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

It is now a multi award-winning visitor attraction offering an unforgettable day out in Northampton.

Designed and remodelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916, the house has been meticulously restored and opened to the public. On site: a boutique restaurant, light-filled art galleries, a stylish design shop and elegant spaces that can be hired for meetings, events and functions.

78 Derngate was the architect's final major commission; his visionary patron, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke. It is the only place in the world where Mackintosh's mature architectural and interior style can be seen in their original setting. As such, the house has drawn many thousands of visitors from around the globe. Now you can follow in their footsteps and see this unique work from one of Britain's most influential and celebrated designers.

We went for tea one mid-week afternoon in August and it was delightful. The cafe is very comfortable with easy access to a very pretty garden. The savouries and cakes were great, served on very pretty china. My one caveat-the tea was tea bag tea-I prefer loose leaf, especially for speciality teas, but I recognise the messy business of strainers... More

We went to see this art deco house and hear it's history and we were not disappointed. They also have a small tea room and we were sad we couldn't get in for tea as it was so busy and we hadn't made reservations. Our fault. Staff were SO wonderful and helpful they even let us park in their staff... More

Stunning showcase of CRM's talent as a designer. No stylised roses here though, dramatic, geometric shapes, clever use of borrowed light. The story of how the house was designed, how it survived with so many original features and how it was restored is told by enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides. Well worth more than one visit. Excellent food on site, best... More

If you have any interest in interior design an/or history it's worth a trip here. You'll get a guided tour throughout the building with information you wouldn't find out without the guide. From my opinion it is only worth the trip once and as I've done it three times for friends and relatives, I got bored by the third time.

I have been here on several occasions as it has become the place for me to take visitors to Northampton. Guided tours are taken by local enthusiasts, and they all have different perspectives and anecdotes to share. The house is beautiful, and of course, totally unique in England. The shop and cafe are also of a high standard.

Excellent house to visit, especially for train lovers! The little cafe serves great food and coffee. As it does not take too long to go around the property, try to find something in the vicinity to visit as well, particularly if you have to travel quite a distance to get to Derngate.

Lovely. We never thought to look for Rennie Mackintosh in Northampton but there it was. Good value, helpful staff. Also has a small tea room where the cream teas are excellent.
