About
78 Derngate is the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It is now a multi award-winning visitor attraction offering an unforgettable day out in Northampton. Designed and remodelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916, the house has been meticulously restored and opened to the public. On site: a boutique restaurant, light-filled art galleries, a stylish design shop and elegant spaces that can be hired for meetings, events and functions. 78 Derngate was the architect's final major commission; his visionary patron, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke. It is the only place in the world where Mackintosh's mature architectural and interior style can be seen in their original setting. As such, the house has drawn many thousands of visitors from around the globe. Now you can follow in their footsteps and see this unique work from one of Britain's most influential and celebrated designers. Please note: To post a review for The Dining Room Restaurant ( a separate business ) you should search for their separate TripAdvisor page. Thankyou!

Such a gem!
The house has been returned to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh design from the 1910s and although quite small, is a real treat if you love his work. We were fortunate to visit when a guide was available and she was so knowledgeable and interesting to listen to, talking about the house and design, the family who commissioned it and Mackintosh himself. Well worth the price of admission!
Lovely attached dining room for coffee, lunch and cream teas, also recommended, plus a great gift shop!
Visit if you can!

So many times we walked or drove past this house saying we must visit, so my sister took action and gifted us a tour for my birthday! I am so pleased she did as our experience was outstanding!
Our guide was so knowledgable, not just about the house and designs but also their knowledge of the family history and Northampton contributed greatly to our enjoyment.
We booked for afternoon tea at The Dining Room following our tour, if you plan to eat there too allow an hour and a half for your tour.
We highly recommend both the tour of the house and The Dining Room a fabulous trip out!

Hi DBT74 - so pleased to hear you finally walked in rather than past us and that you thoroughly enjoyed what you saw! It really is a very special way to spend a few hours and we are very lucky to have such a wonderful house, shop, galleries and Dining Room all under one roof in Northampton! Thank you for sharing.

Our second visit and just as good as the first, starting with the warm welcome as we arrived. A gem of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work made all the better because visitor numbers are limited.

A guide offered to take us round but we were happy to wander around by ourselves. Despite its small size we spent almost an hour admiring the house before adjourning big for tea.

Absolutely delicious afternoon tea that was outstanding value for money.
Unlike many afternoon teas 78 Derngate is very generous on the savoury selection, while still having a superb sweet stand as well...with more than enough to have some go take home too. The scones are fresh and baked to perfection (the savory scones were also delicious). The team were welcoming and friendly, with all covid regulations clearly observed. The teapots themselves are works of art, and the dining room has a stunning view of the park, which is just lovely on a sunny day.

The building was unique and interesting. Lovely views of the garden, and excellent displays that gave context to the home.

However…. The cafe experience was like being cast as John Cleese’s Monty Python character in the Cheese Shop Sketch. We were only lacking the dancers…. But I guess they were out of those too

Oh, dear - sorry to learn that your experience in The Dining Room was not quite as enjoyable as your visit to the house... we are all currently operating with reduced staffing levels and this may have contributed to your unfortunate comparison to a certain sketch...

Words cannot do justice to what a wonderfully rewarding museum this is. The tour guide was outstanding but even if you miss the guided tour, there is ample information in every room. And for those who want to leave the culture to another day, they also do great lunches and afternoon teas.

As a fan of CRM’s work I’ve wanted to visit for a long long time. My expectations were high and I wasn’t disappointed. From the superb hosting and welcome through to the wonderful design, information and excellent shop it exceeded expectations. Tickets are valid for a year. I aim to come back again (and again).

Simply a fabulous tour of the Mackintosh's last commissioned house. The welcome was so warm at reception, very friendly and accommodating of my current injury. Our guide was wonderful, she shared such a genuine love of this building and had such great knowledge. We felt safe and comfortable the whole time. We hope to return within the year when we have time to properly enjoy the lovely shop and cafe. Thank you so much for a wonderful morning.

We had the afternoon tea at lunch time and it was very good. Excellent value, good portions. Food was very fresh. Delicious warm scones. As much tea or coffee as you like. Lovely quirky tea pots. Good service.

Fascinating to see Rennie Mackintosh in such a small domestic scale. Lots of interesting ideas incorporated in his design. Lovely place, well worth a visit. Staff couldn't have been more enthusiastic and helpful.
