Not a really a review as such, just a heads up that this pub has been closed for over a year, well before the covid lockdowns. It may reopen but no sign of that yet.

Cheap doesn't mean good
Aug 2019
Of all the great pubs to choose from in the city centre this isn't one of them. It's one of the worst in the city centre. Like all SS pubs, it has a terrible atmosphere, unkept fixtures and furnishings and a poor selection of products. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean good. You're better off taking the two minute walk to Stonegate or Goodramgate and choosing any of those pubs, because they are all better than this woeful effort.

Traditional pub
Jul 2019
Very old traditional pub and very cheap selling Samuel Smith beer which made a nice change. Worth a visit.

I don’t believe it

As a big fan of Sam smiths beer I popped in The York Arms for a couple of pints , the bar manager didn’t even look at me when I was ordering my drink, he went in the other room for twenty seconds and came back with a pint of old brewery bitter which I have never drunk in my life. I told him the order was wrong, he started going on that it was what I ordered, after he gave me a few grunts and snarls he brought me the right drink, on giving me my changed said if you are having another drink make sure you get your order right. He must’ve attended the Victor Meldrew charm school. Needless to say I didn’t stay for another pint. Humphrey do everyone a favour, including yourself.

This is a nice little pub very close to the Minster.

It’s very traditional pub and has a really good feel about it.

Also it bans mobiles so that’s a bonus!!

Great

Visited this pub with the wife on Monday for lunch, a great old fashioned pub with reasonable prices. We also had lunch which was lovely and generous portions.
Cumberland sausage and mash excellent.
Would definitely come here again as Samuel Smith's pubs are not ripping you off on price for drinks.

Proper pub, giving a quiet friendly welcome, good beer and great value
Jun 2019
Happened upon the York arms as I left the Minster. Wanted a pub for a quick pint or two and it looked like a good choice for a York local pub. I was not disappointed. The Samuel Smiths beer was great quality and value and the landlord was quietly welcoming. If you are ready to bide your time and then engage in a bit of chat with friendly locals, this is the perfect spot. Later in the day, we popped back for seconds and also had a great quality good value meal and even more of a welcome. No mobile phones and other distractions, so good to go to a pub, where chatting to people is the norm, rather than looking at phones.

A nice little pub.

It is a nice old fashioned pub with nothing fancy, which I like.
They do cheap beer and although I haven't eaten here the food is supposed to be good.
I know some people will be a bit put off by the no phones/tablets rule but it's a nice change to go to a pub and just have a chat.
Basically nice pub tha stores what it says on the tin.

An inexpensive tavern with friendly locals

The York Arms is a locals pub. Like a lot of locals pubs, when you find one, you either like it -- or you don't. There usually isn't much middle ground.

On a four-day stay in York this past April 2019, we loved the York Arms.

For one thing, the prices were excellent. With a relatively strong US dollar at $1.35 - $1.40 for pound sterling, the £2 20oz pints of Samuel Smith's bitter made us willing to stay for a round or two more.

We dined there one night, as well. My shrimp scampi -- it's not with pasta, it's batter-fried shrimp with chips -- were served hot, with a nicely crunchy crust. The shrimp were small, but buttery. The food was as good as any pub we'd dined in, and reasonably priced.

The thing that made this pub stand out for my friend and myself were its friendly local clientele. In particular, we met a self-starter tour-guide named Tinker who guided us on a two-plus hours long journey through old York. He was friendly, indeed, charming, and he was full of details. Both my companion and I are tour guides in Boston, and we both agreed that Tinker was terrific. Unfortunately, he hasn't a website yet, so I can't review his tours on Trip Advisor.

Be aware that within the past several weeks the York Arms have prohibited using your cell phones, tablets, laptops, and so on, inside the pub. Perhaps its because my service was limited as a visitor to the UK, but I didn't have a problem with that. The street-facing bar where we drank has no television, either. So when I was there I either read a book or chatted with people -- much more the latter.

There are newer, and older, and slicker and more expensive places than the York Arms. But for four days, it was my local. I hope it will be when I return.

No mobile phones
Apr 2019 • Friends
The latest missive from Humphrey Smith is that mobile phones and presumably ecigs are NOT ALLOWED in his pubs. Seriously you will be asked to leave if you try to use your mobile in here. Find another pub.
